I’ve been awfully remiss in not posting on this earlier. Transition Towns, a group dedicated to developing the skills needed for communities to become more self-sufficient in the coming post-peak oil world, is holding an activist training session in Wellington this coming weekend. There’s a programme of activities running from Friday evening through to Sunday designed to help and inspire people get more active in their communities and politics.
As Nicky Hager and Nandor Tanzcos both said at Drinking Liberally, democracy is about doing more than just voting. If you want to do more but aren’t sure how, the activist training can help to provide you with skills, contacts, and inspiration.
Check out the programme
Over were I live we are well into the Transition town project and it is a very nice and positive way in which to approach the coming transition and meet with like minded people.
Reading the PDF I see that Daniel and Finn are going to be there too. I have done a perma culture weekend with these guys. They are good value and very inspiring.
Transition towns big in Nelson too
also Ecofest weekend begins on Friday in Nelson with the annual eco debate this time between Russel Norman, Nick smith and Marian Street.
Always a good weekend see you there
oob…dont forget to send back a report
“activist training session”? For Transition Towns? Actually I do know about transition towns but does Labour? I might warm to Labour if they had that sought of vision for NZ.
As for “activist training session”, the MSM have twisted activist into a negative. The transition towns movement needs a warm-fuzzy replacement for “activist”, after all this is communities your talking about. Maybe transition town “champions” or “advocates”? I’ll have a look at some Reclaim the Streets sites and see what term they’re using.
[lprent: I like activist – it is how I usually describe myself in most spheres. It is accurate. ]
Lmao Kevyn. I know its nauseating when someone talks about something being PC but that post made me choke on my cheese sandwich.
I think activist sounds just fine. I imagine that they may teach you how to clear a jam in an AK-47 or make an improvised explosive device out of things you may find at Bunnings. By replacing the word activist with champion you risk sounding like a right wally. There are lots of apathetic young men out there who will warm to such dangerous terms as ‘activist’.
Just imagine that a chick asks you what you do in your spare time:
1.) I’m a champion – Chick:You’re a tugger
2.) I’m an advocate – Chick:You’re a nerd
3.) I’m an activist – Chick: You are wicked bad and I want to sleep with you right now please take me to your underground headquarters.
