HDPA is often wrong and usually "Right" but on this occasion she sums it up pretty well, and provides useful historical contest too:

“2002 under Helen Clark took 12 days, 2005 took 30 days, 2008 under John Key took 8 days, 2011 took 9 days, 2014 took 15 days, and then 2017 with Jacinda and Winston took 26 days.

As of today, these talks are at 30 days. They are tied for the second longest spot with 2005. From tomorrow, they become the second longest only to the infamous 1996 fishing trip talks.”

Heather du Plessis-Allan: Coalition talks are hurting Luxon's reputation (newstalkzb.co.nz)

The essential point is not so much that the negotiations are dragging on, but that Luxon talked himself up so much beforehand – as usual. He said he was "unimpressed" by previous negotiations, a silly sideswipe at leaders from Bolger to Clark, Ardern to English, all deserving an apology now. The Great Manager would do things better … and yet the only real difference is that after previous elections the parties stayed in Wellington. And got it done.

After 8 weeks … a Treasurer emerged and was deputy PM …

A major concern to some will be that NZF allowed market rents for state housing, what will he allow in that and the private market in the next 3 years?

        Another issue. Power.

National and NZF and ECNZ – a primer before NZF later opposed sale of shares of power company SOE

After National removed WP from the coalition they did this

September 1998: Sale of Contact Energy In March 1999 the Government announced the sale of a 40 percent cornerstone shareholding in state-owned generator/retailer Contact Energy to US-based Edison Mission Energy for $NZ1.

After the coalition ended in August 1998

      I was listening live.

HADP also went on to champion the disruption to coalition talks, the collaboration by NZF and ACT against Luxon, saying she backs them to fight for their projects*.

      • *For NZF (she said) this is a second provincial growth fund, something which the 2017 government was ridiculed for. This time it's a 'green' provincial growth fund. This proves she is a massive hypocrite.
      • *For ACT (she said) this is the Treaty of Waitangi referendum. This proves she is a massive racist.
      • observer 1.3.1

There won't be a referendum. Luxon is weak and lacking in many regards, but he's not a complete idiot. Chris Finlayson has spelled it out for him, as has Jim Bolger.

        • Muttonbird 1.3.1.1

All good, but my main point is that Stupidity-Allan is a hypocrite and a racist.

Have to laugh every time she rides down the government services, the same government services which are keeping her problem drinking grandfather husband alive right now…

I look on it like any other sport. Some games go smoothly, straight forward. Others have stoppages galore, endless injury breaks, collapsed scrums, and bizarre TMO interventions. Winston’s there so even if it’s not immediate eye gouging isn’t out of the question.

Somebody at Newstalk ZB must be a fan of the Onion or Private Eye … because this is an actual headline:

National's Nicola Willis confirms negotiations with ACT and NZ First are taking place, won't elaborate further.

    What a scoop!
