On Checkpoint tonight, a family that Campbell talked with in May, is/was back living in a motel.

Work and Income is paying $2300 a week for a family to stay in a motel.

Tuaine Murray, her partner and her son have been living in motels for most of the year, while they wait for a Housing New Zealand property.

Initially the money had to be repaid, but now the government is paying for it.

The motel owner charges this rate – because it being paid by the state.

After the Checkpoint report finishes Taine contacted Campbell to say she’d just been given an eviction notice.

    • Chris 2.1

“The motel owner charges this rate – because it being paid by the state.”

The motel owner said they charge that amount because ‘beneficiaries smoke and cause other damage’ to the place.

Actually, it’s the beneficiary who has to pay. This so-called “social welfare” is putting people into tens of thousands of dollars of debt. I wonder if Bill “mr finance expert” English cares about that? This is a preposterous situation. Surely the government could be sued for putting people into so much financial hardship simply because they received government help to put a roof over their heads? But then how could anyone in that position afford to pay for a lawyer?

One day, those responsible for this will stand in the dock.

    (disturbing)

    • Bill 3.1

And seeing as how pretty much the same thing will be happening in Mosul, you’ll be wanting those responsible for killing people as they retake that city held to account in exactly the same way, and with the same sense or level of outrage as that implied by your comment on that vid purporting to be from Aleppo?

      • joe90 3.1.1

that vid purporting to be from Aleppo

        Of course, Pallywood in Aleppo.
        /

        • Bill 3.1.1.1

There are documented instances of the same girl being rescued from three different locations at three different times and always by the redoubtable White Helmets.

So of course, I’m going to say ‘purporting’!

btw – About that vid. You ever seen a head injury with so little blood? My experience with even just minor cuts to the head is that the bleed ingis profuse – certainly much more than a blood splattered face. Just saying.

          • joe90 3.1.1.1.1

About that vid. You ever seen a head injury with so little blood?

I believe the talking point is young kids are being covered in dust in order to be presented as victims of bombings.

Some things never change … The Nats can still rely on Our Tracy

Taking up two thirds of the Front Page of the Dom Post:

Blaring Headline: This is a new Bill English

Big shot of smiling Bill and Paula in front of large blue National Party sign with prominent “N” logo.

Already sounds like a paid Party Political Broadcast on behalf of the New Zealand National Party ? Then read on …

    Tracy Watkins:

Bill English in his first outing as prime minister was everything he wasn’t when he last led the National Party 15 years ago.

When English was sworn in as the country’s new leader yesterday – his deputy prime minister, Paula Bennett, at his side – he was confident. He was straight up.

He is a man clearly comfortable in his own skin and confident in his own judgement.

Followed by much rhetoric from Our Tracy ……. (or rather Their Tracy) ……. on English “proving himself”, his “stellar credentials”, that he has apparently “made enough good decisions now to know he can back himself”, was admirably “straight up” on superannuation and in his response to the Pike River families, and has made some “particularly brave statements”.

Immediately below all that objective, hard-hitting analysis, Our Tracy does precisely what she did during and immediately after the 2008 General Election … she writes a bit of ‘Women’s Magazine’ romantic froth … only this time it’s not so much “John Loves Bronagh” as
    “Bill Loves Mary”.

Breathless Headline: First Interview with the First Lady

New Zealand’s new first couple … hoping to find a balance between her own work, her role as a mum and being first lady … the couple share household duties …

and so on and so forth … illustrated with shot of Bill embracing Mary outside Parliament with caption: “English is warmly congratulated by wife Mary”.

One of Our Tracy’s self-appointed roles apparently being to shore up a section of women swing-voters for National. (along with desperately conflating English with the Dear Departed Leader, Key)

    • Mrs Brillo 4.1

      Nearly made me retch.
I was too preoccupied with hosting duties to write to the paper, but I would have pointed out to Ms Watkins that First Lady is an American term and not in use here. We have Prime Ministers’ wives or husbands.

Could she produce evidence of her newspaper calling Burton Shipley or Peter Davies our “First Gentleman”?

    • Incognito 4.2

National is at pains to portray freshness and rejuvenation ably assisted by diligent little helpers in MSM. Bill English coming out in favour of same-sex marriages [no pun] is a masterstroke of PR and (political) timing. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

    • Chris 4.3

Funny, because I thought that display showed Bill slipping straight back into his bland cardboard cut-out days of 2002.

    • repateet 4.4

Only on the front page? Only two thirds? Hell, on KiwiBlog they’ll be crazed about the biased media ignoring a major event!

  5. The Fairy Godmother 5

This is interesting news. AS a party member I am pleased to have Laila Harre back. I have felt we have moved a long way from the neo-liberalism of Roger Douglas and co and we are moving in a direction that supports the rights and aspirations of working people rather than corporates.

    https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/its-really-great-back-veteran-campaigner-laila-harre-returns-labour-party

    • Cinny 5.1

Busting out the cap’s cause i’m more than a little excited at that news, oh dang yesah!

WELCOME BACK LAILA WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SHE’S BACK IN POLITICS, YES SHE IS… seriously you should see my grin, I’m thrilled, beaming, Christmas just keeps coming early, and if i step back i can see the optimism of the country rising at this news already.

I’ve admired Laila for decades, thanks for being such an amazing wide awake human being you’ve done so very much before for NZ and I am super excited to see you return to do it again.

I’m still smiling, this news is just all shades of awesome. All the best Laila, and thank you for returning to politics, thank you so very much.

    • Cinny 5.2

Laila is such an asset to any party, and it needs to be said that many of the youth whom became involved with politics last election because of her will no doubt already be enrolled to vote (again, because of her) and happy to know that she is back.

Crikey I hope she is selected, looks like it could be two ticks for red next year from this voter if she is.

    • Rosemary McDonald 5.3

I had to check if my memory was serving me correctly…..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laila_Harr%C3%A9#cite_note-Herald2001-3

and yes…Laila Harre has certainly got lot and lots of political experience in lots and lots of different political parties.

Labour, New Labour, Alliance, Greens, Internet….and now back to Labour.

Its very good supporting the ‘rights and aspirations of working people’…but what about those who are not in paid work?

Or is Labour settling firmly in the centre and pitching mainly to middle New Zealand?

      • Chris 5.3.1

“Its very good supporting the ‘rights and aspirations of working people’…but what about those who are not in paid work?”

That’s the burning question. Labour has ignored the poorest of the poor for the last eight elections, and there’s nothing that shows they won’t do the same thing for a ninth. They’ve even screwed the poor over in the meantime on, just for good measure no doubt. Let’s wait to see what happens, but I’m not holding my breath. Labour is not a party for workers, it’s a party for employed workers. And that’s why the left in NZ’s fucked.

        • Rosemary McDonald 5.3.1.1

Laila Harre said in that interview something about it not being the time for new political parties, and Labour and the Greens are consolidating on the left…mayhap we need a definition for “Left “…

          “adjective

          2.
relating to a person or group favouring radical, reforming, or socialist views.
          “Left politics”

          noun

          2.
a group or party favouring radical, reforming, or socialist views.”

I maybe need to see more radical, reforming policies…and nevermind scaring the horses… 🙂

    • Venezia 5.4

That is good news to hear Laila Harre is back in action.

    • the pigman 5.5

Great news. Select her for Mt. Albert pronto.

      Andrew Little for Ohariu.
      Laila Harre for Mt. Albert.
      Jacinda Ardern in Auckland Central.

It’s time to make that MOU work for the Left.

    “A motley crew of plunder-monkeys”

    Guess who that is describing.

And our esteemed deputy leader is…this person!!! This is even funnier than Trump winning the US election. And that’s pretty funny.

“Her opponents accuse her of “pulling up the ladder” – a charge Bennett rejects.

“It’ s simply not true. I sleep fine. I know I’ve spent my political career trying to improve conditions predominantly for women and their children. “:

But, she admits, the dislike for her among some of her opponents is more real and more intense than that experienced by many of her colleagues.

“I don’t think I’m for everyone, it doesn’t particularly bother me.””

      http://www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html

      “Profile of the Sociopath

      Glibness and Superficial Charm

      Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

      Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”

      Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

      Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises. ”

Our Brighter Future is in goood hands….

Edit…this could apply to many of ’em…

      • Chris 7.1.1

Yes, I think you can put Key in that category as well. The difference is Key is a master of the art so has so many people fooled and is why he’s remained so popular. We can rely on Bill to plod his way back to 2002 popularity levels – that’s just what he’ll do without trying, but Bennett’s a different story. I just hope the nats don’t realise first and replace her before the election. The left, and Labour too, needs all the help it can get.

  8. Incognito 8

In my opinion Labour should campaign strongly and boldly (thank you, David Shearer, for your very good speech http://www.nzherald.co.nz/politics/news/article.cfm?c_id=280&objectid=11766237) on getting rid of national standards in education; it is not preparing our children for the future, their future, in the best possible way. Hekia Parata and her insane denials are enough to drive you mad and all Kiwi parents, uncles & aunts, and grandparents (i.e. everyone) should be up in arms about this prescriptive policy forced upon our younger generation by the old National Government under the ‘new’ leadership of Bill & Paula.

    http://www.labour.org.nz/_confused_national_standards_policy_coming_unravelled

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/education/news/article.cfm?c_id=35&objectid=11765351

    • repateet 8.1

Campaigning to get rid of National Standards in education?

Yes, it has to be done, but the problem is in what politicians say, “The people aren’t stupid.” The people are stupid. They have been bull-shitted into believing some arbitrary system with a yes/no number on the line marking regime defines the only important learning kids do and define and restrict the process by which that happens.

Those with malevolence towards teachers and truckloads of ignorance will go into idiot mode and say getting rid of “National Standards” means there are no standards and accountability.

The mentality of teachers has been perverted and a reliance on the NS approach cemented. Most parents would be delighted to have rid of NS if innovative, holistic, flexible approaches were used which engaged children and had them happy and enthusiastic. Happy and enthusiastic because they were growing and learning and succeeding. Parents would be the same. But what chance that happening?

Where are the teachers and educational leadership to come from which could overcome the brainwashing which has gone on? And how to get the general population to see they’re not the fools they’ve been taken for with Tolley’s folly?
