The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...
The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
Off to hear Luxon in Wanaka tonight.
Will report back.
I’ve heard of flagellation, but this seems to be an extreme example.
Bit early for the campaign trail innit?
Apparently not, given the political appearances from the leaders of just about every party at the Fieldays.
Our local candidates (or at least the National and Labour ones), have also been organizing electorate meetings with various party leaders (that is: meetings within the electorate, at which the party leaders speak on various topics to a self selected group of true believers and hecklers.)
Nope, I haven't been to any of them — prefer to get my info in writing….
Need to shift tob4 or 5 year election cycle, perpetual electioneering is tiresome
I don't think less than 6 months out from an election is an unreasonable time-frame for electioneering.
I note that enthusiasm for longer electoral terms declines markedly, when people are asked to imagine their political opponents in power for 5,10 or 15 years (3 terms at 5 years each).
3s to short, I'd go 4,
Three years limits the damage they do. Gotta keep 'em on a short
lead.
You might come back a believer….a 'lux'…
Fiat lux? Lux aeterna?
About 200, full hall, average age 70, purest white.

Ask him if national will ever stop stealing other peoples stuff?
When the bingo sets come out you’ll know you’re in the wrong place, don’t you?
Wanaka, I'd say more the gin set.
gin rummy?
LOL.
Don't knock the age. Nearly all of those will get out and vote.
Probably everyone who's motivated to go out on a cold evening to listen to a political stump speech is going to vote.
You describing Wanaka or Luxon's crowd.
Then what's the split once you take the anti vaxers out and get those who will actually vote for him
There were about 5 anti-vaxxers in the crowd. Not particularly welcome.
Anyone put him on the spot about airports and secession / local government boundaries?
Nothing local at all in his content.
Did they come in hired buses?
Pitching hard into One New Zealand.
Economy
Law and order.
Health and education.
Ask him about his wife's tesla!!!
Fucking clown is the gift that keeps giving.
Really? You honestly think that's a gift?
An interesting item on kiwiblog for all the non-men on the site. The world is getting crazier by the day.
No notes, no podium, no suit.
Similar to Key term 1.
Who is holding his hand tonight? Willis? Bishop or….Jacquie???
No just his Waitaki candidate.
Miles Anderson Farmer?
Interchangeable and sporting a Humphrey Bogart length and width tie.
Pushing gang fear real hard. Ramvraid victims. Big push for Mark Mitchell.
Family immigrants in dairies.
Violent crime stats in gang member growth compared to Police capacity.
Youth military academies.
Very specific health and education targets.
Very keen on bonding health professionals to stay here.
Ruth Richardson asks "First 100 days decisions" question.
Sounds like a post in the making 😀
Some rude anti vaxxers in the questioning
Announcement coming on scale of Dunedin Hospital. Winner chicken dinner.
nothing on tourism or rural issues?
Not a thing on either. could have given the same speech in Epsom, Khandallah or Fendalton.
Needs no notes cos he gives precisely the same speech to all of them. He can only handle one speech with confidence?
Regrets Labour enabling decommission of Marsden Point fuel. Wants higher fuel stockpiling.
I’m sure they can see Lake Onslow if they look out of the window.
National policy is opposed to Lake Onslow NZBattery project.
Was being facetious.
What’s your impression of Luxon? Does he have what it takes? Does he have potential and show promise? Or is he a lost cause? Will he step up and give Labour & Hipkins a truly hard time, e.g., in interviews and debates? Is he a good strategic thinker, a visionary, or just an elite bureaucrat?
He's a globally elite c-suite player, less of the charm of Key and more export-market focused. Like Ardern ready with the tear-jerker anecdote.
If the election were a job interview about how to run parliament or a public sector bureaucracy he would lose to Hipkins.
Show him an export market sector and he will show you how to expand it with some credibility.
Show him a diverse small nation and he's simply not ready to shape a directional response.
He is not ready. More than that Ad, he would find it hard to govern for all, including "the bottom feeders." Diversity and Equity are his achilles heel.
He and Seymour are actual neighbours. Not drawn on Act policy at all. " constructive relationship"
what was the most interesting question from the audience?
Would he bring back the Marsden Point oil refinery?
He had a lot of sympathy for that and opposed the shut down, but Labour had enabled dismantling. Wanted much larger fuel storage here. Had a more interventionist tone than Labour on that one and on the supermarket question.
