Darleen Tana has chosen to stay on as an MP. Greens will probably consider invoking the party hopping legislation at their AGM this weekend, but it's not straightforward.

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/522891/darleen-tana-returns-to-parliament-blanks-greens

I think the Greens can't just choose to have Tana ejected, they have to reconsider their whole position on the legislation.

Darleen Tana should resign, failing that she should be kicked out of parliament. A list MP is there to make up the numbers so we have representation in proportion to how we voted on election day. She now longer represents the Greens, she must go. It’s an insult to the voters that she stays in parliament.

Tana needs to go. Greens must act. She is a good fit for Te Pati Maori though

    • weka 2.1

what the Greens really need to do is not ride roughshod over their internal democratic processes.

      • Anker 2.1.1

You would know more about the Greens and their process than I do Weka. However, Tana staying in parliament, collecting a salary being a lame duck MP isn't fair on the people of NZ who pay her salary (especially those who voted Green). That's just my opinion

        • weka 2.1.1.1

I voted Green, and that includes for the individual MPs on the list. The reason she should leave is because of her untenable political position and probably her actions in the Greens and prior.

Being an independent list MP is not a good reason. The opposing argument to the party hopping legislation is that MPs of conscience need the ability to leave their party and still hold their party to account if the party is doing things that aren't ok. I’m thinking about Marilyn Waring and what she might have done in an MMP environment about Muldoon and the Nats.

Putting the responsibility on a party that has consistently said there are problems with the legislation doesn't make sense. The party is responsible to its own kaupapa and members, both of which are core to the Greens being in parliament.

I will also say that if the rumours are correct that the next person on the GP list is full on identity politics, then I'm not sure that is an improvement over Tana. I know next to nothing about him, but for those of us who consider Tana a problematic MP, it's worth considering the wider implications of who is on the list and would become an MP.

Your point about the next cab off the tank, ditto, Weka.

When the result of the Tana investigation became public I went to see who was next on the list, did a quick look at pre-election material, and thought "uh oh".

It heightened reservations I've had in the past about the GP candidate ranking (and selection) process. It's something I intend to follow up at our next regional get-together.

It's not something I have a lot of spare energy for however after my community project involvement and trying to find concrete ways I (as someone who lives a reasonable distance from bigger population centres) can work towards the CoC being an OTG – one term government.

            • weka 2.1.1.1.1.1

I too find myself split around where best to put time and energy.

I agree about the need to review the list process. Swarbrick has said they are looking at the selection process (although that won't be from critiquing identity politics 😉 ). I hope branches take note as well. I expect it's hard to get candidates to stand, and the more the perception of identity politics the harder that will get, it just shrinks the pool.

It's also a combination of bad lack and bad management that they've had so many MPs go in the past year. I doubt anyone could have seen that coming. But there are some people further down the list that should probably be given consideration. Dave Kennedy has been doing green politics for a long time, and is in Southland (we need more SI MPs). Members choose list ranking by and large, so people might want to consider that when making decisions about party membership.

      • Grey Area 2.1.2

I don't think they will. But I would not be surprised if the national conference decision is to invoke the waka jumping legislation. Just because the Greens have opposed the legislation in the past (after first supporting it in what James Shaw called a dead rat moment) doesn't mean they can't change their position.

For me the issue has always been clear for list MPs at least – you leave the party, you leave the House.

        • weka 2.1.2.1

I made the case above to anker about why it's not that straight forward. But I don't mind if the GP change their position on the general issue, just so long as they work through due process and change their position. Simply deciding to have Tana evicted without that would be to lose integrity.

    • bwaghorn 2.2

If she jumps into tpm s waka could she still be jumped out of it?

      • Binders full of women 2.2.1

Yes, because the Greenies have lost their proportion. And need to replace poor Dharleen with the community-intersectionality-flexiverse guy.

    • Grey Area 2.3

"She is a good fit for Te Pati Maori though"

Why do you think that? TPM has lower standards than the Greens? I'm not sure what you're saying.

    • adam 2.4

What bet you thought the hongi from Debbie was an endorsement, not tikanga.

Or is it just a bit much for you, that Te Pāti Māori are more left wing in their little finger, than you could ever muster up?

Or are you a Tory troll?

Labour leader Chris Hipkins told reporters at Parliament on Tuesday the government was overstating its intervention at Health New Zealand, saying the suggestion it had sacked the board was "interesting spin" given five of the seven board members had already quit.

Making one of the two remaining commissar, looked like they could not afford to restock the board.

    The view of the CEO.

Health NZ was formed when the previous Labour government merged 20 District Health Boards, aiming to reduce costs and duplication and eliminating the 'post-code lottery' of inconsistent care across different regions.

Chief executive Margie Apa said the organisation now had some resources it did not have when it started, and (was) to focus on delivering care in the regions.

She says the change will push responsibilities and accountabilities for budgets into the regions, as well as looking at how resources and staffing was managed … … an opportunity to ensure the different regions had a voice in the way care was delivered.

So in the middle of a transition that was occuring anyhow, National has chosen to pretend that this re-direction is a cost-saving efficiency at the bureaucratic centre.

Former chair of Te Whatu Ora Rob Campbell … said he agreed with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon that they could not keep putting money into a system which was not working.

He said the issues in Te Whatu Ora were, however, much wider than just financial or governance control.

Campbell said he believed there were issues of mis-management and underfunding, but the government should be looking at the Ministry of Health to find out why the system was not working.

He said the Ministry of Health was the key element in setting targets for Te Whatu Ora, setting its budget and allocating money, and had presided over the running-down of the health system over many years.

It had now devised and was running the new system, he said.

"The Minister of Health remains the steward of the new system and the key element in setting policy and the amount of funding that is available. The Ministry of Health is the place they should be looking to say 'why isn't this working, and why haven't we been told'."

National simply put it that Ministry of Health was not receiving reports and did not know much. It seems Health New Zealand is too busy doing stuff.

Hey I know let's just fuck over the bureaucrats for the third year running and expect a different result.

Failed company of MP Darleen Tana's husband owes more than $400K – liquidator

Employees were listed as preferential and secured creditors under wages and holiday pay, but the value was yet to be determined.

Tana resigned after an investigation found she likely knew of allegations of migrant exploitation at the business, and had not been up-front with the Greens. She continues to disagree with the investigation's findings.

"What I can categorically say is that we've spent so much money wasting taxpayers' hard-earned money to find out that I am married to my husband, for better or for worse," she said on Tuesday.

    https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/522918/failed-company-of-mp-darleen-tana-s-husband-owes-more-than-400k-liquidator

Tana resigned as a director and shareholder of E-Cycles NZ, which trades as Bikes and Beyond, in 2019 but multiple workers have since told Stuff she remained involved in the business.

The worker who was told to work on a seasonal visa spoke to Stuff on condition of anonymity. He said Tana was deeply involved in the business and has WhatsApp chat logs with both her and Hoff-Nielsen.

The messages with Tana involve her instructing the worker on his working hours and times, repairs and deliveries, and discussing wages and contracts.

Hoff-Nielsen’s messages show him repeatedly deferring to Tana over financial affairs. In one March 2022 message, Hoff-Nielsen told the worker: “If u want help with wages as we have discussed many many times its Darleen.”
