The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...
The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
Just a quick one…the Standard runs lots of anti Nat stories that tell the same stories of incompetence, government knows best etc that sank the Clark government, EXCEPT they come thicker and faster, at an increasing velocity. Yet the polls go up and up for the Nats. My lovely “middle NZ” friends by and large over the last year have all admitted (if not openly) to voting for Jonkey and say what a great job he is doing……totally crazy stuff.
Is there something wrong in the NZ psyche, do we like to punish ourselves and our peers? Is this a taste of a deeply authoritarian disregard for what is right as opposed to what is individually good for us? Have the Nats enabled our brains to take a holiday from reality? Are you feeling as bemused?
Is this a taste of a deeply authoritarian disregard for what is right as opposed to what is individually good for us?
I would agree with that statement. Everyone knows at least subconsciously that this lot are a bunch of bad apples but they’re too interested in their tax cut (no matter how small that tax cut might be) and having their Obama moment (despite Key sometimes rivaling George W when it comes to stringing together a coherent sentence). Don’t expect this to end anytime soon – the idiots have inherited the country.
the idiots have inherited the country.
Helen Clark’s competence made them feel bad about being stupid; John Key makes it all ok. Therein lies the difference.
Sadly true, but eloquently expressed.
You gotta love the intellectual arrogance of the left!
The disdain for the people that is evident in the past few postings is simply delicious and just exposes the hypocracy of the left’s claim to speak for the common man/woman.
[lprent: Your intellectual stupidity is as immense as your arrogance. Read the about. The authors here don’t speak for the ‘left’, they speak for themselves. Of course that isn’t what you’d prefer so you start inventing fairy tales – so childish. ]
The working class have been abandoned by Labour.
Cue a manufactured persona coming from the right who is one of us… a nice guy and a bit of a clown (even self effacing in daft army suits). A guy who gets suitably flustered and awkward just like most of us would in those situations and whose command and use of language is more or less on a par with our own rather than being the fancy and convoluted stuff coming from the educated liberal left.
Cue those same middle class liberals reacting to him in much the same way as their US counterparts did to Bush.. further alienating the working class insofar as our foibles ( the ones being ridiculed by them) have been aped and presented back to us through the manufactured persona of JK.
Or something like that.
Intellectual arrogance of the left…hmmmmmm!!!!!!!! I would suggest that the “left” in NZ live in a system with regard to property and economy (and the consequent social structures) that is almost entirely a creation of the liberal / conservative nexus of the “right”. It is this that the left argues against, the intellectual arrogance with which the right to dictate the terms of the debate.
Ummmmm… I think you will find that I’m talking about the people posting replies on this thread not the regular contributors to this blog.
However your rather knee jerk reaction speaks volumes about how YOU handle perceived criticism.
[lprent: I couldn’t give a pigs-arse about criticism of the topics. I do care about behavior and I protect my posters.
My knee-jerk reaction is because of handling fuckwits attacking the writers personally rather than what they say. The posters are considered to be of FAR more importance to me than any commentator. They put in effort to research and write the posts.
Posting has a quite specific meaning on this site. If you don’t want me landing on you then be precise in what you say.
However my initial note stands. You’ll find that almost everyone who comments here has quite different views on any one topic. Only the monumentally lazy and stupid automatically brand people with a group label like ‘left’ and then expect to be able to comment about the ‘group’ based on that label. Because you’re setting the rules of inclusion and exclusion of the ‘group’ you can make it anything you like. You’ll find that doing it brands you as intellectually lazy around here.
Group labeling without purpose just shows a social immaturity that I associate with spotty adolescents. I’d suggest you need to grow out of it fast if you don’t want to continue attracting my attention. Otherwise I’ll include you in the genus ‘troll’ and demonstrate what sysop’s can do.
Now since it is evident that you haven’t read the policy and I haven’t pointed it out before, I’d suggest you do it immediately. Next time I get annoyed with you, you may find that I’m less lenient. ]
Just had a bit of fun at http://www.themarch.org.nz – you can add your name and footprint to the list of those Marching for the right to smack children.
I thought ‘Mr. Baby Shaker’ was a good choice.
Iwanna Smackmykids!
I wonder how much an 400mm by 600mm price of astroturf would cost? would make a decent sign for the protest…
(edit, ohh boy, its cheap (!!!), 19 dollars per meter (@1.8m wide), http://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/flooring/other_flooring/artificial_grass_1_83m_wide_green_338323.cfm?sid=1&rid=1&orderby=1 what a pity they aren’t protesting in wellington)
Additions half million dollar protest lol’s,
You could sure rent a lot of protesters for that much!
100,000 could be paid $45 each to walk up Queen Street. If this protest gets any less than this I would be surprised.
Double Dipton’s new TV show… When I first saw this advertised I had the clear impression it was something being produced by the government with Bill as the front man.
The name, ‘Plain English’ I identified straight away as the same as DD’s newsletter and the script DD was reading was full of big ups to the government.
Honestly… what’s next. Crusher Collins on the telescreen every morning to take us through our physical jerks?
I had the same WTF reaction when I saw these ads. It really felt like I had woken up in an election campaign. Anyone want to defend Bill / TVNZ?
Imagine the howls of protest if this had popped up a year ago with Michael Cullen fronting it?
Im surprised nobody had mentioned that the Nats have taken away meal breaks just after celibrating Labour Day.;
from http://www.atimes.com/
“Afghan province falls to Taliban
The Taliban have taken control of Afghanistan’s Nuristan province following the withdrawal of Western forces from key bases, as ordered by the American commander, General Stanley McChrystal.”
Hmm..that’s the same McChrystal who wants thousands of extra troops…….guess he gets them now. And John throw in a couple of extra pieces of fodder?
The honeymoon for the Nats stretches on and I’m puzzled as to why? It would be interesting to hear what actual policies and actions are perceived as so good – let’s hear the examples from Nat fans, rather than generalisations. Or is it John Key, the new popular TV Idol, rather than the Nats they support?
