"…an hour each of reading, writing and maths every day" How? Cameras in every classroom monitoring and timing teachers. Make up time after school on sports days/class trips. Stupid. No trust in teachers and schools to do what's best for their tamariki.
I think this response from Emily Writes sums it up.
How one online rant about Shakespeare became a near fact-free global news story. Sam Brooks at the Spinoff tells the full story. Another beat up from media who didn't delve deeper into the story.
Izzy's mother responds.
I would have thought the value of the painting just increased. Don't know what he has to complain about.
Having been a teacher for a long time the bullying word has often been used to describe a wide variety of behaviours/incidents which are often not bullying behaviours at all. The word gets overused/misused. In education this is how we define bullying. ...
With regard schools, after tomorrow there's 2 weeks holiday and maybe the thinking is that the downward trend will continue and when our tamariki go back there's less of a threat. The decision will be up to schools I would imagine.
I like this take from a teacher. https://halfwaythere.co.nz/2021/03/04/horton-hears-a-whinge/
They need to sort out a bus service into town before they do anything. No more Flyer. Went through in the holidays and had to walk out of the terminal area to catch the number 2 bus. What major city airport doesn't have a transport service to the city ...
Thank you Dita De Boni. At last some sensible media commentary about education in NZ. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=11376389
Rod Oram's column in the SST today is excellent. Hits the nail right on the head with regard to Dirty Politics, Slater and the influence of the powerful.
That exhibition is in the SF airport. Saw it last week when I was over there. Pretty cool stuff.
Gordon Campbell says it better than I could. Nails it. http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL1409/S00245/gordon-campbell-on-the-farcical-elevation-of-david-seymour.htm
"For example, why can’t we experiment more in education?" Yeah that's right lets experiment on kids-our most vulnerable and important people. And when it all fails like Charter Schools do, never mind, maybe there'll be another school they can go to.
It's so they can push through unpopular, untested, unresearched education reforms in the guise of improving learning outcomes yet have more to do with privatising education and demonising teachers. With a PSU these reforms will happen without ...
I'm sorry but as a teacher when I see anything that has little or no educational value for the children I teach and in fact may be detrimental to their learning then I will argue against it and I believe in a democracy I have the right to do that.
Policies like Charter Schools that were never mentioned before the last election yet were implemented after.
You mean the democracy where the experts in the field are not listened to and ideologies are enforced with little or no research.
Yeah a party whose education policies I disagree with got elected. It's not going to stop me fighting them every step of the way in defence of the children I teach.
Great-a party that gets 0.7% of the vote and one seat provides us with the new Associate Minister of Education. Watch for more charter schools and bulk funding and vouchers to rear their ugly head. Things that have nothing to do with educating children and...
The IES policy is not well understood I think. I don't think parents realise how disruptive it will be to their child's class if their child's teacher is selected as one of these teachers. 2 days out of the classroom a week with relievers taking their ...
Neil Finn on stage last night in Napier...."Don't vote for the Spies".
Wow. I remember him from Wgtn Teacher's College back in the 70's. A good man indeed.
Sorry folks. No idea why that posted 3 times!
I think the biggest culprit soundwise was the kick drum from where I was sitting. The bass was inaudible at times.
In Wellington last night? It was good. Worth the trip down from Napier. Better than the last time I saw him. This band is probably his best for covering all his bases. Liked his little talk about noticing more and more American ideas/influences happening ...

Here's another example. At my school there is a 5 year old who is a P baby. Grandmother (53 yr old living by herself) has custody and looks after him and his 3 yr old brother and is doing a good job considering the circumstances. WINZ have just told her ...

Hmmm it's not on the Stand up for Kids Facebook page now either which tells me it may have been taken down. Pressure from above maybe.
