Should Joe Biden do an Andrew Little?

Jo Biden’s recent debate with Donald Trump did not go well.

Donald Trump was unhinged and light control of the debate let him say numberous lies. Such as:

  • Democrats support abortion until birth and everyone wanted to overturn Roe v Wade.
  • He claimed to have the “best environmental numbers ever”. The Guardian has listed 75 ways in which Trump made the country dirtier and the climate warmer.
  • Nancy Pelosi turned down a chance to deploy the National Guard during the January 6 insurrection.
  • He made the largest tax cuts in history and hs administration had the greatest economy in history. The cuts were the fourth largest and Bill Clinton’s economy was in better shape.
  • He claimed Biden called black Americans “superpredators. There is absolutely no evidence Biden used the phrase or ascribed to the theory behind it.

But Biden was pretty awful. He appeared confused, somewhat frail and lacking in energy.

John Stewart speaks for billions of us in the world.

There is talk about major levels of panic in Democrat ranks. I can understand why. Even though the thought of the unhinged orange buffoon getting back into the White House should send shivers up the backs of all Americans there is a sufficient number of them prepared to do the unthinkable to make his return a distinct possibility.

Biden has responded with this mea culpa.

The person who is no doubt really happy is RF Kennedy Jr. There is opening the possibility that he could secure a significant number of votes from disillusioned Americans.

And claims that Biden would be pumped full of Adderall were clearly wrong. The only one who showed any evidence of artificial stimulation was Trump.

Maybe Biden should do what Andrew Little did in 2017 and stand down for a younger candidate.

As Stewart said “this cannot be real life”.

Stay tuned.

    "Should Biden do an Andrew?"

    Yes, yes and YES!

Get Gavin Newsom (sp?) in to give the master of lies a good telling off!

Agreed….Newsom…the California governor is 56 and an obvious replacement. Just do it.

Changing horses in midstream is never a good idea in the middle of an election campaign. Biden could stand down, but immediately you have a candidate hardly anyone has heard of. Jacinda was well known, (if we are making comparisons which are not particularly useful given the vastly different systems between AONZ and the US). The Dems have made their pick (yes I know it's not formal til the August convention) but thousands of Dem caucuses have supported Biden. Their fundraising is well in place (though of course not as much as Trump), they have their teams mobilised, their advertising underway and never forget, this election is not only about the President. There are many other races underway. Biden is an old man, but so is Trump, who is a disgusting old predator. Some who supported Bernie in 2020 are now crowing – Bernie is 83 this year. I hope they are saying it's not age, but politics that matters. One important thing for me is Biden being the first President to walk a picket line. TBH, I hate this gladiatorial style of politics where one TV contrived debate sends everyone into panic mode.

This is one of those times where the centre/left deserve the bedwetter label.

The team Biden has is stacked with law abiding sane people with talent. If voters can't see past one elderly gentleman who often struggles to communicate then they'll have earned the inability to vote in future once Trump suspends the constitution and implements his Project '25 fever dreams.

        Yep.

Thanks SPC for the link to Project 2025.

Some good stuff in there which will be brought to the attention of David Seymour and Shane Jones!

A much more widespread carve out of our "shallow state" is indicated …

This highlights the problem with being too married to a theoretical orientation. It puts blinders on you and you can't see anything else. You come up with nonsense like Trump will suspend the US Constitution…..or even have the power to do so.

A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.

The entire quote from the link above:

So, with the revelation of MASSIVE & WIDESPREAD FRAUD & DECEPTION in working closely with Big Tech Companies, the DNC, & the Democrat Party, do you throw the Presidential Election Results of 2020 OUT and declare the RIGHTFUL WINNER, or do you have a NEW ELECTION? A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution. Our great “Founders” did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!

Hint: Not talking about Trump avoiding the Constitution but the "other people" …

"This highlights the problem with being too married to a theoretical orientation." Q.E.D.

            • joe90 2.1.3.1.1.1

The full quote doesn't make fender's assertion that Trump will suspend the US Constitution wrong.

Not the point. This simply shows that your partial quote is out of context and irrelevant to the subject. The reply was to you.

No President can change so much as a comma in the Constitution. It takes both houses of Congress and at least 38 States to amend the Constitution.

                • joe90

the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution.

                  Dissemble away, fucko…

The proof can only be in the future.

Let's see what happens when Trump wins steals the election!

You appear to be reduced to name calling ……

Take a moment or 2 and read Sinclair Lewis' 1933 novel "It Can't Happen Here."

Bernie still has his marbles, unlike Joe.

Joe’s lack of action over Palestine is quite enough to count him out in many peoples view. It is cruel indeed to subject a frail failing codger to such a process.

Most of my life in NZ until MMP, electoral politics has been about supporting the lesser evil–or the evil of two lessers as union leader Bill Andersen used to put it…

Americans have a bent Electoral College, first past the post, voter suppression, alienation leading to a huge non vote, gerrymandering and Democrat DNC that supports US Imperialism and capital as much as the Republicans do, so there is little likelihood of a good outcome from this election.

NYT Editorial Board have called for him to leave the race.

I have been reading Robert Reich today. Much better analysis. Not ignoring the poor performance of Joe B last night, but also following on Twitter the response of Democrats, including Joe's marvellous stump speech. Humility, decency, honesty,. Values.

Same newspaper ran an op-ed by Adolph Hitler and praised Benito Mussolini.

      They’re back to their roots.

      /

      • Tom Hunter 3.2.1

        … and praised Benito Mussolini

So did members of FDR's administration. In the mid-1930's there was much praise for using big government institutions and bending companies to the government's will to reduce unemployment, among other things.

In many corners of the Western Left there still is! 🙂

  4. When the post debate polls come out next week Biden will be replaced if his support falls five percent or more.

It's a pity Biden didn't get the nomination in 2016. He was a better candidate than Hillary.

A friend in the US who is a lifelong Democrat emailed this morning that he can't vote Biden as he is enfeebled and is looking for someone like Jack Ryan to come forward.

    • Bearded Git 4.1

Trump is 1.9 percent ahead today on Real clear politics where he was 0.5 ahead just over a week ago….Biden is too old and frail and after yesterday has no chance.

He has lost the youth vote….put Newsom in and at least part of that will return.

  5. Belladonna 5

It may be desirable, but I can't see it happening. I don't recall a single case of a US party leader (let alone a president) sacrificing his personal chances in order to get the party a candidate with a better chance of winning.
TBH – I think that we forget just how highly unusual Little's action was. He's not my favourite politician – but Labour owes him a huge debt of gratitude for stepping aside in favour of Ardern. Without her, there is zero chance that Labour would have been in a position to negotiate with Peters in 2017.

  6. Rolling-on-Gravel 6

    To be laconic:

    Yes.

  7. DS 7

The problem: Biden falling out of the contest at this point would cause multiple people to try for the nomination. Which would turn the Democratic Party convention in August into a brokered convention, rather than a showpiece for the candidate.

In short, the cure here might well be worse than the disease.

I guess tRump got his message across.

A new poll showing the disastrous Atlanta debate appears to have helped — or at least, not harmed — President Joe Biden's chances, and the internet laughed as everyone rallied around the notion it seems no one knows anything anymore.

    […]

The non-partisan group Political Polls shared a new general election poll Friday afternoon with a curious finding: Biden led Trump 45 percent to 44 percent post-debate. The previous poll "was a tie," the group noted on social media.

A bewildered internet couldn't help but ask the tough question: "Did any of those people watch the debate?

The faugressives are calling for a good man to drop out. Watch his rally at Raleigh and see the real Biden in action. And there is his excellent progressive record in government with a repugnant majority Congress and a slim majority in the Senate.

There is talk about major levels of panic in Democrat ranks

Good. But honestly, fuck them. They created this situation. There's some hope they might come to their senses, but why now and not all the earlier opportunities I don't know.

Also, Little is miles ahead of Biden in terms of being a good man and politician.
