The miracle of the fishes

First they increase the number of endangered Hooker Sea Lions that can be killed as bycatch, then they voted down legislation to protect Hector’s and Maui Dolphins by extending the ban on set nets and now National are increasing the Hoki quota despite the minister for fisheries himself stating he is:

still unsure about the population’s viability.

That’s right. He doesn’t know whether the population is viable but he’s increasing the catch quota by 20,000 tonnes.

So what numbers is he relying on then? My guess is the number of donations made to the Waitemata Trust by the fishing industry

The problem with this being an export industry is that simply refusing to eat the horrible stuff is irrelevant — more just gets sent overseas in nasty crumb.

McDonalds use Pollock for their fish-burgers.
But the Pollock catch quota has been reduced because of declining stock.
See Corpwatch Blog: Still Learning Nothing
“McDonald’s requires a steady supply of a consistent product at a predictable price. Hoki, a whitefish that’s overfished by industrial trawlers in New Zealand waters, will be a temporary fix, a few years at best.”

I await with anticipation Phil Heatley’s trek walking on the waves of NZ’s Exclusive Economic Zone increasing our fish stocks by shear messianic will. What a media event this will be!

Seeing Phil Heatly on “Outdoors with Geoff” fishing show a while back saying he wants to protect the fish stocks was a joke then. An interesting article here on Hoki in New York Times http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/09/13/MN1819KRNI.DTL&type=green

Hoki aren’t the sort of fish which matter to National’s traditional constituency of middle-aged men who own boats.

‘Protecting fish stocks’ in this context is code for ‘stopping the coconuts and the chinks and the mowrees from catching all the undersized snapper in the Hauraki Gulf.’
