Trump final campaign ad

The American public has had to put up with an insufferably negative election campaign with two candidates who are widely regarded as dishonest, corrupt and unlikable. The media has been saturated with negativity, attacks and attack ads levelled by each candidate, and their surrogates, at the other.

Through most of the campaign, Clinton has been outspending Trump on ad buys massively.

Now, very ironically, the Trump campaign is attempting to steal Michelle Obama’s famous words “when they go low, we go high by launching a surprisingly positive-in-mood, forward looking closing campaign ad.

This anti-establishment ad reminds me of the elements which Michael Moore said that Trump uses in his appeal including:

  1. The rustbelt BREXIT.
  2. The last stand of the angry white man.
  3. The Hillary problem.
  4. The depressed Sanders vote.
  5. The Jesse Ventura effect.

Scott Adams, of Dilbert fame, and a late Trump supporter, thinks that the Trump campaign has hit the nail on the head with this ad.

Trump’s strongest message at this point is that Clinton is corrupt in a variety of hard-to-explain ways. People don’t need to understand the details. They just have to hear the message enough. This video uses visual persuasion perfectly to portray the halls of power and corruption versus the people united. The color red is exceptionally well-used. It activates us.

The establishment has trillions of dollars at stake in this election.
For those who control the levers of power in Washington and for the global special interests, they partner with these people that don’t have your good in mind…

Reminder: if Clinton wins Florida OR Ohio OR North Carolina on Nov 8 (US time) Trump’s chances of getting 270 electoral votes are basically finished. Each of those states is a must win for him.

Today the Real Clear Politics no-toss ups map has Clinton ahead 297 to 241.

So despite being on the defensive this last week, Clinton still has a clear advantage on the electoral map.

    People don’t need to understand the details. They just have to hear the message enough.

    Yep, who cares about details when you can just rely on emotive lies and allegations instead of the truth in order to win an election.

      That’s for the purposes of a 2 minute TV ad.

      However, the details are very clear, if you wish to delve into them. Sec Clinton, and a large part of her core staff team, have likely committed numerous felonies relating to the mishandling of government, classified and secret/top secret documents.

      Remember, every single email containing government or confidential information which was not correctly handled represents a separate felony count.

      Intent is not a factor in many of these laws – the standard is that of gross negligence (i.e. extreme carelessness).

      I understand Trumps Bullshit makes peoples skin crawl, but his message on the corrupt establishment rings true, why is that, if people didn’t think that, there would be no Trump.

        Sure, no one said that stuff about jobs and factories, that’s true.

        But what Trump is promising won’t make any appreciable difference either, because he’s misdiagnosed the problem – it’s globalisation and new technology together that have destroyed jobs. Rolling back the globalisation won’t do anything about the technology; in fact US factories that have been opening up in the states in the last few years due to low energy prices are more highly automated than ever, requiring fewer jobs.

    538 thinks Clinton is ahead in Nevada, and likely to win based on unexpectedly strong early voting for Democrats in the state.

        Labour union organisation in Nevada has done an excellent job of turning out Democrat leaning workers to vote early.

        For Trump to win in Nevada now, the very many unemployed/underemployed white vote in Nevada needs a big turn out on election day, as well as low black turn out. It’s against him to some extent now.

        The polls may show Trump basically even in Nevada, but the Democrats have a far better developed ground game infrastructure turning out voters to the polls.

    But appeals to racism and ignorance have been tried before. Happily, the NZ experience is that our Donald fell short post Orewa. That’s going to be the case in the States, too, because the American people aren’t as dumb as Trump needs them to be.

        Nobody has said that the American people are deplorable or irredeemable. That comment was clearly directed at the more bigoted parts of Trump’s support, a minority, obviously, but still a dangerous grouping. It was an politically unfortunate phrase, as it turned out, but still accurate.

    So, what could a Trump presidency mean for New Zealand?

    Well for a start, rather than repeal the TPPA, the Donald has pledged to renegotiate all such trade deals in America’s favour.

    This would see something already bad, turned into something much, much worse.
    All junior economic partners to the TPPA, (and even some of the bigger economies as well), will see themselves opened up to even more undemocratic control by foreign, (read US), multinationals.

    As well as suffering economic subservience to US business, on the defence front, this subservience will also be ramped up, recently resumed US warship visits, will morph into visits by openly nuclear armed and powered vessels.

    New Zealand will be dragged deeper into fighting the US’s so called and never ending “War On Terror”, New Zealand cannon fodder will be deployed at US discretion to die in Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Syria , to fight the terrorist threat de jour, Al Qaeda, Isis, Taliban, Houthis. All with zero benefit to New Zealand’s interests, or defence, only serving to make New Zealand a target.

        Personally it is only my opinion, but I think that the ability of the US nuclear umbrella to shield us from ICBMs or even shield us from the fallout from a Northern hemisphere nuclear exchange, may be slightly over rated.

    Very post truth ad – I found it very negative. I struggle to see how this 0.1 % billionaire game keeper has suddenly transformed into a poacher, one of the little people. Plus I see ZERO evidence that he will keep his promises. This whole campaign from trump is one big grift and the people that vote for him will be very sadly disappointed imo.

    The ad is for the converted and i don’t see many new people or groups suddenly going for him. I am looking forward to the election – but I can’t work out if it’s the end of the beginning or the beginning of the end.

      It may be in a tiny corner of Youtube where only I go that one can read of the terrible corruption and murderous record of Hillary. Trump may say horrible things, and might, yes, might end up doing them. The reason to suppose that Clinton probably will is that she already has. He may become a war criminal, she already is, it would seem.

In a city 65,000 , not one Trump advertisement – anywhere! Oh sorry I did see one bumper sticker earlier this year. Minimal Clinton Signs – ours is one of them and it’s been in the front yard since August. We will all be glad when this farce is over and the toxic dust settles.

    I randomly asked a guy in a truck in the supermarket carpark if he was voting for Trump. He said Hell no, I’m not going anywhere near him. That was reassuring. Generally no one is even talking about the election except that they will be glad when it’s over.

    My view is that Hilary’s main problem is the old Albatross Bill and recently that Wiener creature. I will only say this about her , her choice in men is deplorable.

    I am pretty sure whoever wins will only be a one term president. Clinton is a politician whose time has past. She represents and defends a broken consensus that many Americans are in near open revolt against. It is doubtful she will prove a revelation in office (and she has been in public life long enough I think for people to know what she be like). Against almost anyone other than Trump she will lose, unless the GOP implodes and that splits the alt-right vote. If the right is in disarray, she MAY then have a chance. But really, the Dems need to get a modern candidate for the 21st century, not someone whose politics in 2020 will still hark back to the 1980s and 90s.

    If Trump wins he’ll split and destroy the Republican party. And he’ll be such a disaster that no matter who the Democrats pick they’ll win next time. There is no way Trump can deliver on his promises of reform. He’ll pretty soon be exposed as a liar, a blowhard, and unfit for the job.

    The most important thing for American democracy is the 2020 redistricting. Even if they stay together, it is unlikely the Republicans will be able to sustain their gerrymander after that. If they are also split by then, then it will be goodnight nurse to the angry boomers and the Tea party right forever.

      Sitting presidents tend to be quite hard to dislodge.

      Assuming Clinton wins, I can already see her re-election campaign in 2020 looking a lot like Truman’s in 1948. His campaign focused very heavily on critiquing the ‘do nothing’ republican-controlled congress and the voters agreed with him. Given what republican leaders are already saying they’ll do under a Clinton presidency, I’d be willing to wager now we’re going to see history repeat.

          It’s almost like the response was preplanned, and just waiting for a protesting dupe to provide a target:

    The interesting thing to see will be how the Senate goes. If the Democrats reach at least fifty and Clinton wins, there will at least be a new Supreme Court justice and then deadlock through minority filibusters.

    If the Republicans hold the Senate and Clinton wins, there will be deadlock. Similarly if Trump wins and the Democrats gain the Senate there will also be deadlock and also a feeling of WTF.

    If Trump wins and the Republicans hold the Senate it will be the darkest timeline. And likewise deadlock through filibusters.

        trump is a billionaire who admits he doesn’t pay taxes. He actually fits in, supports and is supported by that group you oppose, trump publicists just use a disguised label.     Doug Band, top Clinton White House and Clinton Foundation aide, warns that Chelsea Clinton should not keep pushing on with an internal investigation of the Foundation.

    Why? Band warns that Chelsea wouldn’t want to see questions about Foundation money/resources facilitating her political campaigning, her wedding, her life for the last decade etc. coming under scrutiny.

    Seems like Band knows where the (financial) bodies are buried.
