The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...
The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.

We must be over paying mps, if they have enough time to do a second job!
Or the rest of them are slackers!!
Honestly for such a small country, I think our regional Chairs should be MPs as well.
We have such weak governance layers, and government goes out of its way to scourge them.
Don't have to like his Party, but Mr Arbuckle may be onto something.
Figuring he might as well coin it while he can, I guess.
It was not uncommon in the past for them to have other jobs,
Perhaps the best example was Frank Kitts. He was MP for Wellington Central from November 1954 until November 1960. He was also Mayor of Wellington from December 1956 until 1974 so he held both positions for 4 years.
He was the longest serving Mayor Wellington has ever had, and one of the most popular.
There is no doubting this Alwyn, including that Frank Kitts was a good mayor.
In those days however, both local body and MPs jobs were relatively poorly paid. Many aspiring applicants for the local body jobs had to make a decision about giving up their day jobs because the meetings were usually held during day time hours and recognising that the pay was so poor. This deterred many of the salaried or waged.
This has changed now and for me the concept is not so much about whether the person is capable of juggling time lines/meetings etc but whether it is greedy to have to well paid jobs when the pay for one job is
$107,794 (councillor's job)
while the minimum wage is
is $23.15 per hour
The to that you add an MP's salary of
$173,400
This totals $281,194 before any allowances are added. Both jobs have worthwhile allowances (as opposed to costs reimbursement)
This is sheer greed, sure OK if you can do this, but it does not take away from the perception (reality) of greed, or 'troughing' as they say in the vernacular.
Stop press
'MP with two jobs to stand down from council role
NZ First MP Jamie Arbuckle will stand down as a Marlborough District councillor in October, when he can step away from council duties without the need for a local by-election.
Arbuckle, in a statement on Tuesday, said he would be donating his council remuneration since the last council election, and future remuneration, to a charity in Marlborough.
The fifth term Marlborough District councillor said when he was elected MP last October he would hand back his council remuneration if he couldn’t keep up with doing both jobs.
Earlier this week, he felt he was doing both jobs well enough to keep both salaries.'

So he has had a year to get both salaries…..oh poor him having to give one up. Why do these people need the teaching of ethics/perception? Are they really so far removed from others?
The evidence is sufficient for charges of incompetence to be made be made by a prosecutor.

The original Labour plans for the extra capacity had already been pushed out to 2025.

Always thought Mark Mitchell was a thickhead. All bluster and no brain:

Is there anyone who still believes (or pretends) that Super CEO Luxon and Macho Minister Mitchell have any kind of grasp on their jobs?
And if you want to blame the media, to claim it's just biased Jenna Lynch or whoever, then please ignore all their reporting and go straight to the press conference, unfiltered. (Obviously you won't want to do this if you support the government, but you can't say the evidence isn't there for you. No commentary required).
After the prepared script (the easy part) the questions begin at 29 minutes. Cue shambles …

that link is now broken. Looks like they took it down.

Interesting weka:
The link stops at around 3 mins in for me. Whether that means it has been deliberately halted I can’t say. If its the latter then it means the online outlets have been ordered to remove the item.
If that proves to be the case then that is preposterous.
thanks Anne.
It seems to be ok now. Must have been a temporary glitch or overload.
It will be interesting to see if after that balls-up if Mitchell suffers the same fate as his female colleagues that were also exposed as flakes.
Wow I just watched Luxon and Mitchell and that interview about Corrections.
They are f#cking amateurs. May those who voted these losers in hang their heads in shame.
I am so embarrassed that these two are amongst the best leaders we can come up with.
The tory talent-pool is only ankle-deep..
