Big ups to Sue Moroney for her work on paid parental leave. Labour has introduced a bill and is debating it under urgency.

National is jumping up and down because it will not be referred to a select committee. It had and passed through but National vetoed it. And now National is going to support it …

Sue Moroney, you are a star, this will change lives for the better. Thank you to all involved in making it happen, thank you, thank you.

Big up’s from all the future babies as well, if the main caregiver (mum or dad) isn’t stressed, it makes a huge difference to the first few months of a new life.

Personally I’d like to see more support and information for post natal depression as well as women not being kicked out of hospital so rapidly after birth. Hoping for changes in those areas as the health sector/the well being of all babies & children and the mental health sector improves with our new government.

After the dodgy practices by the Nats yesterday, shove everything under emergency.

Good. This is a promise kept.

A good day for the Democrats.

They hold the Virginia governorship with a 9% margin (expected to be close), and might even take the Virginia house of delegates (really unexpected, currently it’s a 50-50 split with 5 seats likely to go to recount), win New Jersey governorship (expected), win full control of Washington state (not really expected).

    https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/democrats-wave-2017_us_5a0267e1e4b092053058cdad?ncid=inblnkushpmg00000009

    • Anti-LGBT politician defeated by transgender woman

A Virginia politician has made history as the first openly transgender person elected to any state legislature in the United States.

Danica Roem, a 33-year-old former journalist, won a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates on Wednesday (NZT).

Her opponent – incumbent Republican Robert Marshall – refused to participate in debates with Ms Roem during the campaign, or to acknowledge her as a woman.

Ms Roem received 54 percent of the vote in her district, ousting Mr Marshall from the House seat he had occupied since 1992.

      This…may be big.

Jamie Lee Ross and Simon Bridges like they’ve come a set for a bad mafia movie.

For those that want to know about the guy that stopped the church shooting

    • One Anonymous Bloke 4.1

He works as an Epidemiologist doing research on the causal relationship between inequality and violence?

He lobbies for free universal access to mental health services?

      He punches Republicans?

Nah, having not so much as glance at the video, I’m picking he’s your hero because he carries a gun. Just like Graeme Burton.

      • chris73 4.1.1

Well I can easily say that you are a complete fucking moron and the best thing you can do for society is ensure you never pass your genes on to anyone

This man went out and did what most of us probably couldn’t do or even conceive of doing, he saved lives by actively going out and confronting someone shooting up his church so yes he sounds like a good guy to have as a hero

But you wouldn’t know that because instead of hearing what happened you’d rather sit there and tug yourself off thinking how clever you are

        • One Anonymous Bloke 4.1.1.1

I’ve stopped enough fights in my time to know that you can do so without excessive force.

However, I’m not talking about him, or me, or you: I’m talking about your decision (bad choices, eh) to brand him as a hero.

Whilst voting for policies that increase inequality, and therefore, violence. Whilst voting for the party that guts mental health services.

          Your rhetoric belies your behaviour.

          • chris73 4.1.1.1.1

“I’ve stopped enough fights in my time to know that you can do so without excessive force.”

How exactly would you stop someone armed thats shooting without using excessive force?

“However, I’m not talking about him, or me, or you: I’m talking about your decision to brand him as a hero.”

Hes a hero because he went out to stop someone shooting people, he went out by himself to protect his friends, his family, his community, he put his life on on the line for others. Thats why hes a hero and you’re excrement.

“Whilst voting for policies that increase inequality, and therefore, violence. Whilst voting for the party that guts mental health services.”

Which has nothing to do with the interview but you think you’re making some profound point but you’re not, you’re just a insignificant nothing, a nobody, when you’re gone nothing will have changed, nothing you do will make the slightest bit of difference

            “Your behaviour belies your rhetoric.”

Yours shows why you should hand yourself into the police so you can be charged for being an oxygen thief

            • mickysavage 4.1.1.1.1.1

He might personally be a hero but the system that allows the rampant distribution of guns is the villain.

              • chris73

And thats fine, thats a fair point to make and certainly something that could be discussed at a later date but at the moment you have a man that went out and stopped the carnage, has spoken about needing to seek counselling, is being hounded by the media, he can’t even go to the memorial service because of it and its in a small town so who knows how many friends hes lost

Hell he even spoke about how hes grown his santa beard because he helps deliver christmas gifts to needy kids, if thats not a hero then what is

Plus its also interesting to hear how things like this play out from the person involved not how Hollywood portrays and might educate a few people

                • mickysavage

He is an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. I prefer to concentrate on making sure the top of the cliff is safe. And sorry but 26 people have been killed. I think they are having far worse days.

                  • weka

I think that man having his and his family’s home surrounded my media and being harassed by them is part of the same dynamic that allows the shooting to happen.

Him not being able to go to the memorial given he lives in such a small town is actually pretty huge IMO. Again, same stuff. Lack of compassion and respect, and willing to trade those things off for power and money.

                • Ed

If no-one had guns, the problem could not have happened.

              • One Anonymous Bloke

I’m just not sure that’s true MS. Icelanders have heaps of guns and very little violence, for example.

Plot gun ownership per capita against violent crime, by country – is there a correlation between the two?

I’m firmly of the opinion that addressing inequality and improving access to good healthcare will achieve a lot more that gun laws can.

            • One Anonymous Bloke 4.1.1.1.1.2

There’s nothing profound about your ghoulish hypocrisy.

          • weka 4.1.1.1.2

I found it an interesting watch. The interviewer is out of his depth, and a dick, and actually painful to listen to near the end, but the guy being interviewed tells his story straight and raises some pertinent points esp that he is currently being kept prisoner in his house by the MSM and can’t attend the memorial service for his neighbours and friends. He’s obviously going through a lot, and I think having his story told linearly and with minimal manipulation by the media is useful and has meaning.

    • joe90 4.2

For those that want to know about the guy that stopped the church shooting

He didn’t stop shit. The shooting went as planned and 25 people were shot to death, you fucking moran.

You should tune into Parliament TV right now!
    https://www.parliament.nz/en/watch-parliament/

The Speake, Trevor Mallard, is sitting in the chair nursing a baby! No, I don’t think I have had too much wine! Unfortunately the MP speaking at present is Judith Collins.

Earlier today, Newshub Politics on Twitter showed this – Willow Jean Prime nursing/cuddling her baby in the Chamber. Also a Newshub article on this.

The house is currently under urgency debating the introduction, first reading, and second reading of the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Amendment Bill.

UPDATE – Tracey Martin is now speaking – her NZF colleagues behind her need to realise they are on TV ….

Joke of the day is from Bill English

” “We will hold it to account on its ability to grow wages”

Englishs record on growth of wages is appalling. That is why he and Joyce rabbit on about averages. It took a hard fougt ( and opposed by English and the Nats) court win to get decent pay for carers and carers make up such a big portion of the workforce their increase raised the average wage.

Pardon me for not laughing LOO.

Ardern’s retort to English and Nats is priceless.

I will be interested if a comparison is ever done to see how often what the Opposition leader thingks is in news headlines etc so close to a change of govt?
