"We have all seen the violent disorder that has taken place across the UK over the past week, much of which has been fuelled by malicious and inaccurate communications online," Chief Superintendent Alison Ross. "It's a stark reminder of the dangers of posting information on social media platforms without checking the accuracy.

"It also acts as a warning that we are all accountable for our actions, whether that be online or in person."

Police across the UK have shared warnings about spreading an incorrect name and false information about the suspect's background and immigration status online.

The Southport suspect has since been named as 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana. The teen, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, was charged with three counts of murder and 10 of attempted murder

(born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents, thus not economic migrants)

Sunder Katwala, director of the think tank British Future, highlighted a number of high-profile online figures who were "sharing that false information" on X, formerly Twitter. A number of experts said this misinformation had been used by a "vocal minority" to sow division and "fuel their own agenda and trigger a summer of thrill-seeking impulsive insurrection" following violent disorder in the days since the attack.

Officers from Cheshire Police have arrested a woman in relation to social media post containing inaccurate information about the identity of the attacker in the Southport murders.

The 55-year-old woman from near Chester, was arrested earlier today, Thursday 8 August, on suspicion of publishing written material to stir up racial hatred (S19 of the Public Order Act 1986) and false communications (S179 Online Safety Act 2023).

She is currently being held in police custody where she is assisting officers with their enquiries.

      Chief Superintendent Alison Ross said:
“We have all seen the violent disorder that has taken place across the UK over the past week, much of which has been fuelled by malicious and inaccurate communications online.
“It’s a stark reminder of the dangers of posting information on social media platforms without checking the accuracy. It also acts as a warning that we are all accountable for our actions, whether that be online or in person.”

I'm not a big social media person and I'm sure I read somewhere that the accused was a refugee with a different name to now being reported. Was this in mainstream news channels as well as social media?

      • SPC 1.4.1

The Southport suspect has since been named as 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana. The teen, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, was charged with three counts of murder and 10 of attempted murder

(Axel Muganwa Rudakubana born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents, thus not economic migrants)

Sure there were lies about the identity of the accused on social media to incite the organised violence

        • Spa 1.4.1.1

Sorry – I think I was a bit ambiguous. I meant was incorrect information published in msm as well as social media?

  2. SPC 2

The American media accused of being tamed by and thus pandering to Trump.

    • One smear of saliva – one drop of blood. One publicly released test.

    • Nic the NZer 3.2

The rnz article seems to claim the two boxers have not been given access to the completed reports on their chromosomes? I wonder if that's true given they have apparently been shared with the IOC (by the IBA) and a news web-site has supposedly seen them?

I mean shouldn't by this stage the IOC just be abundantly clear that chromosome testing is not being done for Women's boxing at present so it doesn't matter what the IBA tests show regardless.

      • Visubversa 3.2.1

The IOC stopped sex testing in 1999. It is left up to the various sporting organisations. The IBA tested these boxers twice. They informed the IOC that they did not meet the criteria for inclusion in the Women's Division. The IOC has problems with the IBA and ceased recognising it as the accredited sporting organisation for boxing.

The two boxers had the opportunity to appeal their disqualification to the CAS. Khelif put in an appeal (which the IBA agreed to fund) but then withdrew it,

The boxers could also authorise the release of the results of the two tests done by independent laboratories for the IBA. They have not done so.

        • Nic the NZer 3.2.1.1

What surprises me about this is the reporting. The IOC is presently in charge of women's boxing but, rather than owning that figures such as one of the authors of the rnz article feel the need to make some pretense like the results of their chromosome tests are in doubt and relevant to these two boxers being allowed to compete. It seems as if these authors can't actually defend using legal sex/gender status as a qualification criteria for Olympic women's boxing.

  3. SPC 4

Lies and yet more lies from James (JD/jaydee) Vance – lies that Pence would not have stooped to.

Another failure of character from "Mr King James bible of Key of David of Philadelphia Gilead".

Mr Vance says that Mr Walz intentionally avoided combat in Iraq by resigning shortly before his unit was deployed there, and that he has been dishonest about his role in the military.

Mr Vance claimed: “When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the army and allowed his unit to go without him.”

But that is not true and he knew it was not true.

    The facts

In February 2005, while he was still in the National Guard, Mr Walz filed an application to run to be elected as a member of Congress from Minnesota.

The following month it was announced that there would be “a possible partial mobilisation of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard” to Iraq within the next two years, according to a 2005 press release from Mr Walz’s congressional campaign.

Mr Walz then retired from the National Guard in May 2005, which he later said was so he could focus fully on running for Congress.

His National Guard unit received orders to mobilise for Iraq in July 2005, and was sent there in March 2006, according to the battalion’s history page.

JD Vance served in Iraq as a marine journalist, for 6 months, but wrote Hillbilly Elegy (look at me), rather than Battle Cry.

    • AB 4.1

Echoes of the "swiftboating" smear of John Kerry in 2004.

From that link: "in 2004 LaCivita, a former US Marine, organised Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which in one of the more shameless episodes in US political history, sought to cast doubt on Kerry’s record in Vietnam, a conflict the incumbent Republican president, George W Bush, had avoided."

    • Will 4.2

The claims around Walz are also covered at Assessing claims about Tim Walz’s military service (msn.com).

      There are four claims:

Abandonment of troops – The WP found "Whether he abandoned his troops is a matter of perspective, but it is noteworthy that his retirement request was not blocked."

Stolen Valor – "This is on the line. He did achieve the title he has claimed, for a total of seven months, but it would be more accurate to say he “served as command sergeant major” rather than claim the title outright."

Service in Afghanistan – "This is also on the line. We can find no evidence Walz ever claimed he served in Afghanistan. He served overseas in support of the Afghanistan war, but sometimes his phrasing might mislead people into thinking he was an Afghanistan veteran."

Carrying weapons – "Walz’s language was sloppy and false. He did carry weapons of war — just not in war."

Sloppy or dishonest? Or just politics.

  4. SPC 5

    And the band played on.

Te Arawhiti is an independent departmental agency which reports directly to the ministers for Treaty Negotiation and Te Arawhiti, as well as Māori Development.

It’s understood the Government is considering absorbing Te Arawhiti into two existing ministries.

The Ministry of Justice could potentially house the work regarding historic Treaty settlements and Marine and Coastal Area, while the Ministry of Māori Development – Te Puni Kōkiri, could house other policy work and the monitoring of Crown agencies regarding their Māori obligations.

As the master (taurekareka) of verbose witticism, Shane Jones, put it,

"Well obviously there's quite a few options that are being looked at to ensure that the bureaucracy is match fit to deliver the Māori outcomes and the Treaty outcomes that we believe reflect what we campaigned on," Jones said.

"This is not the Jacinda Ardern government. This is a Government that has a different perspective, a different set of priorities."

Jones said when it came to the Treaty of Waitangi and monitoring Crown commitments, iwi Māori were more than capable of looking after themselves.

"They don't need to have handmaidens, they don't need jungle guides," Jones said.

100 or more of the 200 Maori out of work, because iwi are capable of doing it for free when government bother to ask them, or they can write an unsolicited letter. Or phone him – some would rather ask him to eat a patu.
