It's illegal to feed ruminant protein here, too, but as fertiliser?

    @DuckSwabber

In Australia, it is illegal to feed animal derived ‘meal’ to ruminants. But poultry waste litter can be used as a fertiliser on recently grazed pastures with a 3 week rest period before animals are provided access again.

“Poultry litter” as a potential source of infection of dairy cows in the USA with highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 cannot be ruled out. In the USA , it is permitted to feed ground-up chicken waste to cattle. #vogelgriep

      Yum..!..

Ground up chicken waste fed to cows…

(Reason number fifty-three to flag the animal-bits…)

Act and NZ First are in that bed with National……..getting very messy and smelly that bed is……….

      Call me cynical.. but.

My feeling here is that both parties have colluded and have agreed to vote in favour of what is essentially a feel good bill that will have no actual effect on NZ or the over all governments agenda.

What it does do is remind National who is really In charge of this shambles, and that they, and Luxon in particular, are there because ACT and NZF let them be there.

I would suggest there isn't a whole lot of altruism attached to this. This is pure "sending a message" politics. Seymour especially is pissy at the moment because Luxon didn't follow through on his promise to conduct an investigation into who leaked the referendum papers..

This is quite likely a signal to National.. Don't be too arrogant or we'll pull the plug and this house of cards will come tumbling down.

"Glad to do me friends a favour, doesn't cost me to be nice. But nothing gets you nothing, everything has got a little price."

I have to admit the same suspicions were aroused in me before I'd even finished reading the OP. They can pose as righteous folk in this irrelevant matter, but none of their real agenda is being compromised.

I'm cynical enough to believe you CharlieB. 🙂

Yeah..I'll buy a cynics t-shirt on this one..

As others have noted..it is more a power-play against lux-on…

And nz-fact.. could call a halt after select-committee..so..?

And even if this piece of legislation..this undoing of the racist evil muldoon did..makes it over the line..(which I hope it does..)..it only effects about 5,000 old people..(the youngest bring 75..)

Which really is just a drop in the bucket when compared to the 100,000+ immigrants we get every year…

Very hard to think of any reasons to oppose this righting of the wrong…

And nz-fact (pronounced 'nizz-fact) could use it to underline their initial fingers-up to lux-on…

And if national are at all smart..they will also back this…

..it should pass with unanimous support…

In fact national would be fools to oppose this..

The (financial/political) cost for this to those parties/nz…is chump-change..

And all political cynicism to one side..the recognition of this historical wrong…and this attempt to mop up some of our shame as a nation..

..will matter most to those 5,000 elderly samoans…who lived thru this..

..and this is a very good thing…
