Please help https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/afghan-women-safe get some women & children out of Kabul.

I have one slender hope: that there will be yet another parallel with the Vietnam War, from which the right wing in American and our society appear to have learnt very little if anything at all..

Back during the Vietnam war we were all endlessly bombarbed with propaganda about what evils would happen if the evil Communists in Vietnam were allowed to win. Thailand, Malaysia, etc would be defenceless, and all the Asian countries would fall like dominoes, and before long even the penguins on Auckland Island would succumb to the Red Tide…

It was, of course, utter bollocks. None of this happened. Red China got impatient with Vietnam at one stage and tried a military skirmish. The Vietnamese gave the Chinese military such a bloodied nose that there have been no skirmishes since. And who terminated the horrible reign of fanatically murderous Pol Pot? It was actually that supposedly 'terrible' Vietnamese Govt which expended the effort to rid Asia of such lunacy, and restored reasonable government to Cambodia.

My slender hope is that this may turn out in a similar way. This Taliban claim to be Taliban 2.0 – not the same as their predecessors who were bonkers in suppressing women and barbarically destroying other cultures' works of art.

Let us hope so, even if the hope seems slender. But could the propaganda machines still be at work?

That's a mighty slender, slender hope.

Nevertheless, the irony appeals to me. It came to pass in Indochina: the USA created the demon Pol Pot through its clandestine bombing and disruption of Cambodia; USA then pulled out, leaving the problem for others.

It was Vietnam that finally did the necessary to get rid of Pol Pot, and thereby did the region more good than the USA ever did.

I am hearing so many dire predictions of what will happen in Afghanistan. I would love those predictions to turn out to be rubbish as they were in Indochina, but I agree – it is a very slender hope.

concer about treatment approaches for children with gender dysphoria

      • Anker 3.1.1

Fair enough. Didn't realize that's who alliance binary.

but 5 psychiastrist concerns about young kids getting puberty blockers. So I think that is important

        • Joanne Perkins 3.1.1.1

6 Psychiatrist wouldn't be enough to staff any reasonable sized hospital in Australia, so when the numbers hit 60 or 600 maybe they would be worth listening to, only if they were prepared to announce their connections or lack thereof to Binary Australia. But hey, what would I know? I've only been living as a transwoman for around 23 years

You would be able to share some insights from your perspective.

            1. Do you believe there may be downsides to the affirmation model, given research that indicates a significant number of children and teens resolve their gender dysphoria in early adulthood? Why or why not?
            2. Do you have concerns that this simplistic approach, coupled with resource strapped health services may result in inadequate efforts to diagnose and treat other conditions that may be present?
            3. Do you have links to research proving the long-term safety of puberty blockers, which have increased in use since the affirmation model was adopted?
            4. Do you have an observation to make on the reality being presented to young people about the future and the rise in mental health issues and suicides? the role of social media on well-being? the consequences of the neoliberal individualism mindset that is all these young people have known?
            5. Do you even consider that those currently concerned with a failure to recognise women as a distinct biological sex class, have for decades rejected the stereotypes that included those that society expected from you as a male?

Yes, you could contribute if you wished. (Also, being able to stand back from your defensive mode may make your contribution really valuable.)

You might find this link here more palatable. It is also a good read, and has nothing to do with the religious right who simply linked the actual article.

          Paywalled.

The letter was in response to this article about a cohort study that won't actually be determining the treatment options, if any, a particular patient chooses. The letter seems to be confusing the consent process for the study (i.e. observation) with the consent process for any treatment being offered.

I wouldn't have put it anywhere near a "clinical trial", as studies go. No placebo, no blind/double blind, no standardisation of intervention options… not sure how anyone would actually make that description of it.

          • Sabine 3.1.2.1.1

UPDATED | Senior psychiatrists have gone public with ethical and scientific concerns about Australia’s first long-term treatment study of transgender-identifying teenagers and children.

The Trans20 study at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne involves a projected 600 patients aged 3-17 given pro-trans “gender affirming” care, including potentially sterilising hormonal treatment for gender dysphoria, or distress about one’s body.

“There’s a kind of assumption that the gender affirming treatment being provided is the gold-standard, appropriate treatment,” Sydney psychiatrist Roberto D’Angelo told The Weekend Australian.

Dr D’Angelo is one of six psychiatrists to put their names to a letter in the journal BMJ Open. “Are families actually told, ‘we’re still not sure this (affirmative model) treatment is the best way to treat gender dysphoria’?”

There is concern about possible social contagion in rapidly increasing numbers of teenagers, chiefly girls, declaring trans identity with no childhood hint of gender confusion, and undergoing novel treatments with puberty-blocker drugs, cross-sex hormones and sometimes surgery.

The link that i provided is not paywalled, as i don't pay a subscription to he australian. You just have to click on it, unless it is your links that are paywalled?

            • McFlock 3.1.2.1.1.1

maybe I hit the limit on free links? don't particularly care, as I found the original article and the letter.

So six psychiatrists have concern about gender affirming treatment – they should welcome a longitudinal study that might indicate they were right, rather than confusing it with an experiment.

Good call for the 16 who quit (guessing more will follow as soon as they have somewhere else to go). You couldn't pay me enough to do that shift. There’s little hope of police intervention if you get booted to the ground and surrounded by drunks or disgruntled drivers who are fed up with the ridiculous parking fees. The city is violent enough without being a parking warden.

Councillors recently voted to extend metered parking until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and until 8pm every other night.

E tū union organiser Michael Gilchrist said several people in the city council's parking officer team have recently resigned with concerns about their working hours being extended.

Shifts would last until at least 8.30pm every night and 10.30pm on Friday and Saturday nights, he said.
