The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...

The site will be off line for some hours.
It’s great to see that not everybody thinks and acts B & W and that some are making efforts to chip away a path towards a light at the end of the tunnel [this is possibly the worst and most ironic string of metaphors I’ve used in a while].
This one stood out for me, and a fine example of prefigurative politics:

A great grassroots initiative.

Poor buggers. At least they can feel lucky they will be allowed to go back to where they live, unlike the many aussies who are banished permanently from their homes, stuck in a foreign country they've never set foot o . Sorry Ann and Dave – first world problem.
I don't get it. Why isn't the negative test status checked before getting on the plane? Isn't the plane a risk for transmission?
That's right. Their concerns seem to be about a lack of communication and what happens at the point of entering New Zealand when people aren't aware of the rules, but you'd think that they wouldn't have got to that point if there were proper checks before getting on the plane. No mention of that here. Does that mean no checks are carried out when departing Australia? Not surprising – it's always been a matter of out of sight out of mind for the Australian government.
I don't follow closely, but seem to remember they're only checking randomly on inbound passengers at the NZ end.
Do people still need to check in with their airline at the airport before they fly? Or is that automated now?
I don't know. Like you, I saw it strange people could leave Australia without proof of a negative test. What struck me was Ann and Dave blaming the New Zealand government when you'd think they shouldn't have been allowed on the plane in the first place. Sparked my irrational prejudices against Australians.
Not sure the Australians can be blamed….my brother visited from Melbourne in May and a couple of days after he arrived I asked how our covid tracer app compared to Aussie's….he replied “what tracer app?”
He had been through our border and at no time was he asked to download or instructed to use it, he was completely unaware it existed.
Wouldn’t that support blame being aimed at the Australian government?
or NZ customs, border control
The NZ govt could require all airlines flying into the country to a) check negative test status, and b) inform passengers of NZ requirements around covid (eg awareness of app and how it works, what happens if they get sick or are required to go into MiQ, how to get tested and so on).
