End of the car age: how cities are outgrowing the automobile

Dedring says London has always been progressive in terms of public transport – its narrow, twisting roads were never conducive to the automotive domination that occurred in many US and European cities in the 1960s and 70s, when the car was king. But from the turn of the millennium, there has been a concerted attempt to encourage switching to other modes of transport, and the past decade has seen a 30% reduction in traffic in central London.

“Traffic levels have gone down massively,” says Dedring, “partly because of the congestion charge, but also because we are taking away space from private vehicles and giving it to buses through bus lanes and to people through public realm [developments].” And now to cyclists, too, with the planned “cycle superhighways” and cycle-friendly neighbourhoods being trialled in three London boroughs.

All around the world we see cities and countries doing the exact opposite of National. They encourage public transport and discourage private motor vehicles. The result is more liveable cities, far less pollution and they cost less to live in as well:

Car clubs offer a second statistic. Whereas a personally owned car caters for an individual or a family, a car-club car can service 60 people. As I type this I look at the VW Golf sitting outside my window, which I last drove a fortnight ago. Private cars are wasteful and expensive.

So we need to ask: Just who is National ruling for as they make our lives ever more expensive? Who profits from their policies?

I will be kind to others by asking a couple of questions.

Why would our Prime Minister not inform us about deployment of our troops yet tell people overseas?

Why would our Prime Minister tell us that deployment of our troops is “not newsworthy”

What did his ‘casual’ attitude and body language signify when he was asked why we don’t deserve to know?

If my fellow citizens are going overseas because it’s important, If my fellow citizens are going overseas to help in a military conflict, If my fellow citizens are risking their in going overseas, If my fellow citizens are going overseas to risk their lives for me, If my fellow citizens are going overseas on my tax dollars, how come I don’t deserve to know but foreigners do?

Why do more people not see that John Key is indeed a cretin? Is Key’s main weapon that that those he appeals to most are in that position because they are simply even more cretinous than him?

This is a sleeper issue. The Government refused to tell us or the media what was happening but Key told a foreign newspaper. I suspect this will become a major issue in the next couple of days.

Yep – I totally agree with you, MS. This is distraction politics at its best. The PM taking the heat off the ponytail saga, and gleefully leading the MSM down another track.

John Key’s right wing brownshirts take their lead from Putin’s online goons.

Key in Saudi meeting his Citibank mates.
And continuing to behave like a 12 year old wannabee obsessed with money and celebrity.
Look at some of his comments below.

‘With a net worth of some NZ$60 billion, Prince Alwaleed is an investor in Citibank, the Four Seasons Hotel chain, Fox Entertainment and Twitter. Which is where their colourful conversation started.’
“You own Fox News, wow,” Key wrongly asserted.

On the table in front of them was a model of the prince’s latest project: a 1100m tower which will be the world’s tallest.
Key wanted to know the cost.

“Gosh, the Four Seasons is an amazing chain, fantastic hotels…at our Maui house the Four Seasons is in front of us, it’s a great place for dinner.”

“Your trip to Turkey was interesting. Prince Charles, Prince Harry,” the prince changed the subject.
Key: “He’s coming to New Zealand in a couple of weeks.”

New York Times calls for Cheney the Dick to be prosecuted for torture, if only to prevent it ever happening again.
