And with a late run Bill English clinches the award with his incredibly uncaring indifferent statements today regarding the housing crisis.

From Stuff:

Bill English has denied leaving Labour in the lurch, saying the housing shortage and prison overcrowding are nothing new.

Lisa Owen questioned the National leader on Three’s the Nation on Saturday about briefing papers given to incoming ministers from Labour and NZ First.

The papers warn the high cost of housing is a drain on health, education, employment, homelessness and productivity, and is causing wealth inequality and increasing the cost of Government services.

“Elsewhere in the briefing papers that were released, there were 72,000 houses short around the country, a prison population blowout on the horizon, a dysfunctional Ministry of Health and no money for police pay rises,” Owen told Mr English.

“So have you left Labour a disaster zone?”

“No, not at all,” he replied.

“None of that is new. [Labour] are trying to spin it as some kind of big problem. I mean, the business of Government is to deal with the issues that are there and there are always challenging issues.

If record homelessness and being 72,000 houses short are not crises then nothing is.  And English seems to be saying that everyone always knew there was a crisis.

I guess this is a slight improvement compared to the previous leader who tried to deny there was a housing crisis and then blamed Helen Clark for it both at the same time.

National, the party that clearly does not care that in a land of milk and honey too many people are living in completely inadequate housing.

This is essentially National’s version of fake news: no reason to panic about our disastrous management suddenly being revealed, it’s all manageable problems we were tackling, (lol) nothing to see here.

    What rubbish.

Labour and the Greens should drag his name through the mud until he has no choice but to resign.

  2. James Thrace 2

If National are down to 32% in tomorrow CB poll, expect a few BBQs at Judith’s and Simon’s

    • One Anonymous Bloke 2.1

The MSM’s been reporting that ‘both parties internal polling’ have Labour still behind (just). In other words, what Roy Morgan said: Greens plus Labour have the numbers.

So I don’t know about the low thirties: 35-37 would do the trick 😈

      Shymn Bruchgiss for leader.

      • ianmac 2.1.1

Winston the other day during QT offered to arrange Bridges some speech lessons. Tut tut.

Amy Adams/Simon Bridges by the end of February.

“There is no housing crisis, but if there were, it would be entirely Helen Clark’s fault. Not that there is, mind you. It’s just Labour having a whinge again — you know how those socialists are, always blubbing about something or other. So, yes, nothing new here. Business as usual. Labour just need to… erm… show some guts, and deal with the jaw-dropping catastrophy we most definitely didn’t leave them. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to the toilets to wail and gnash my teeth over the election result again.”

I notice Bill English keeps on pushing his rubbish lines about the new government.

“They are weak and in disarray. They are not good managers and will squander the money on the wrong things. He, Bill, is personally popular. ”

He is careful not to mention Jacinda or Winston by name, and says “the Leader and Willie Jackson had an argument about Te Reo.”

Now the truth was Willie was expressing an aspiration, his Leader reminded him of the current lack of suitable teachers. They did not argue. Discussion goes with progress.

Of course if you come from the FPP mentality, you say how it will be, no discussion or consultation, instead you pass rules under “urgency.”

He has admitted I note, that should his popularity go as Andrew Little’s did he would resign …. well we can but hope.

The man has limited humility, an inflated sense of entitlement, and did not own any of the issues caused by his government’s mismanagement.

  5. Westiechick 5

Its what I never understood about Bill’s budget surpluses celebrated by the gov and the media. Why celebrate the underfunding of essential services and infrastructure when that is what it takes to achieve surplus? It just seemed dumb. Now the left is left to clean up the mess. Again.

    • Incognito 5.1

Because the few were having a great party [no pun] at the expense of the many and they wanted and still want it to continue for as long as possible. Some liken them to a toddler whose toy has been taken away of fallen out of the sandpit or to somebody who’s going through the stages of grief. I think it is more like a P addict whose supply has been temporarily shut off. Both (i.e. the toddler and the addict) will behave in predictable ways, mostly.

    • Ffloyd 5.2

Never understood it either. Every time I heard Rock Star Economy (spit) I think of all the poor and starving and homeless and disenfranchised and innocent children going without the most basic necessities? of life and I just want to weep. But God willing, times are a changing. We might just return to the egalitarian society that the previous to the previous pm was apparently so proud of being part of.( All lies of course).

      • Terry Bond 5.2.1

Every time I hear (or heard about) our “Rock Star” economy I’m wondering when I’m getting my trip on “The Star Ship” http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Starship Anyway I can’t imagine poor old Bill partying with Led Zeppelin without crying for his poor old ma.

But of course only the top Rock Stars ever got to fly in the Star ship, The rest toured in a beat up old VW combie.

  6. ianmac 6

Interesting to study Bill’s face when he is lying. Memorise the blandness. Easily tell the lies next time.

  7. Chris 7

    I don’t get the vitriol

60,000 was estimated in February and growing

    http://i.stuff.co.nz/business/89336116/treasury-says-nz-needs-60000-more-homes

It isn’t exactly a shocking revelation

    • One Anonymous Bloke 7.1

“He [Mr English] said a couple of things; one, the use of of the $15 billion asset of Housing New Zealand, and the second was that he was seeing a major crisis in Auckland in housing in five or six years,” said Mr Roberts.

      Bill “Corrupt” English, 2010.

      • Chris 7.1.1

Unless I missed something (Apologies if I did) the article is about housing being around 72,000 (I’m guessing this is the high estimate to add affect) short and it is a massive shock to Labour.

While it was publicly stated it was estimated at least 60,000 short (I’m gussing this is the low end to male the nats look less crap) in Feb and growing.

        Did Labour miss it?

        • mickysavage 7.1.1.1

It seemed that everyone, even Treasury, acknowledged there was a housing crisis except National.

Can you point to any publicity where National acknowledged how big the problem was?

          • Chris 7.1.1.1.1

            Nup. English was crap

But it isn’t a big shock out of nowhere which is what Labour seem to be implying

            • mike appleby 7.1.1.1.1.1

Labour are not saying it’s a shock or out of nowhere Ferchrist’s sake!!! Show me where they have said it’s new or sudden?

They are saying 72,000 homes short IS a major issue and have simply stated facts that it has spiralled under National who are so short sighted and lacking in care or ideas that they could only come up with using cheap motels to solve the problem.

Now Labour re in government they are dealing with it….that’s what they are saying .

unlike English who say’s “[Labour] are trying to spin it as some kind of big problem”….and his mate John Key who denied there was any crisis at all and focused on which pony tail to pull next.

        • Ankerrawshark 7.1.1.2

Chris labour doesn’t have to make National look crap they have done it on their own… tens of thousands of houses short, water crisis, educational standards slipping. If this was rental accommodation national wouldn’t be getting their bond back

  8. Tanz 8

Since Labour is now wasting time filibustering its own lack of policies, will we see anything change? National have Labour on the rack at Question Time every day, and not even Mallard can save them. English won the popular vote over Labour, and nothing can change that, not even Mr Seven Percent. Mr English is our wisest PM to date, and hence, the majority wanted him as PM. Karma is already kicking in, the ineptness of this new govt is unprecedented. Clark at least had capable, experienced ministers, Ardern’s lot come across as newbie students. Winston often looks embarrassed…

    • aom 8.1

Interesting opinion. A wise PM wouldn’t need to resort to obfuscation, a majority isn’t 44% and ineptness looks more like Bill English on The Nation this morning when he refused to take any responsibilities for the failures of his Government. Try again!

      • Patricia 8.1.1

Had he been so “wise” then efforts would have been made to start reducing the housing shortage rather than boasting about a surplus and possible tax cuts..
A “wise” man would have won the election easily as his wisdom and great attributes would have shone through.
No – I think wise is not the
        word I would use.

    • Ant 8.2

“……Mr English is our wisest PM to date”

No difficulty pairing wisdom with lies?

    • Incognito 8.3

Did you hold your breath while typing this because it does look like your brain ran out of oxygen …

    • Cinny 8.4

“Karma is already kicking in” it sure is Tanz, starting with national losing the election.

    • greg 8.5

what planet are you on tanz or are dreaming back to the days before dear leader abandoned you

    • left_forward 8.6
