Drinking Liberally - AucklandWHAT: Regular event for Drinking Liberally’s Auckland City chapter
WHEN: 7:30pm, Wed 23 July (TONIGHT)
WHERE: London Bar, corner Queen and Wellesley Streets, Auckland City.
WHO: You and any of your friends who may be interested
THIS MONTH: Mix and mingle, a great chance to meet fab new people, have a beverage or two, and talk politics if you are so inclined.
COST: Free, you will just need to buy your own drinks.

Entrance to the bar is on Wellesley St, go up to the top of the stairs and through the doors and we’ll probably be at the far end of the bar (where the stage is) setting stuff up.

Originally we had Margaret Wilson lined up to speak, alas she has had to reschedule for later in the year. We have had a mad-cap wacky series of adventures trying to line up a replacement, but our best attempts have all been stymied.  (We might even regale you with tales of our woe if you buy the right person a bevy on Wednesday).

And then we figured, what the heck, everyone had a good time at the first one and if anything was lacking from that it was sufficient time to get around and actually meet some new people, rather than just talking to those we already knew, so we thought you might feel the same way. Hence the mix and mingle for this round!

Cheerio good folk, see you Wednesday, or see you next time (Wednesday 27th August, same bat time, same bat place).

“COST: Free, you will just need to buy your own drinks.”

Well, I guess Winston won’t be joining you then.

I would love to make it but I dont think I can grow a ridiculous looking beard in time and feel like I might be the odd one out.

[lprent: Never seen you (as far as I’m aware) – but just from what I see here you should grow the little beard. It may act as some kind of idiot comment filter? There should ALWAYS be hope.]

conor can’t be a particularly good PR man if he can’t get somebody decent to come and speak

[Tane: That’s pathetic. If you’ve got nothing constructive to add then piss off. Or, better yet, start your own little right-wing drinking club.]

[lprent: The timing was too short. But Tane’s comment doesn’t really go far enough. It is a pity he spotted your comment first.]

Don’t you people have a speaker wanting to talk up the marvels of the Labour-NZ First coalition? Couldn’t you have Peter Brown along to talk about the importance of loyalty, or Taito Philip Field about personal accountability, or Russel Norman talking about how the electoral finance act is working so well in practice, or Tim Barnett talking up the next poll results?

Labour has so many people in Parliament. Couldn’t you get one of them along? Even Andrew Little came to a right-wing group function in Auckland a few months ago. Couldn’t you get him along instead?

Tim: We were all jacked up for Speaker Wilson. However she had an overseas guest shift her dates, and that left us with little time to organise and alternate speaker.

Believe me they tried. I lost count of the number of people who were tried (the mailing list was rather active). But the house is sitting which makes it difficult to get politico’s. Other people we tried either had prior commitments or weren’t around Auckland. The organising group will itself be at half strength tonight for much the same reasons. Of course that pretty much describes Auckland 🙂

On the other hand, I suspect we now have commitments from a rather large group of speakers for the future. However Auckland being what it is, I think we may need to always have a few fallbacks.

  6. The first four comments really show us exactly the level of contribution we get from the Right. Honestly, is that the best you can do? You can’t contribute on substantive issues in an intelligent way and here there’s some really weak attacks.

“We were all jacked up for Speaker Wilson. However she had an overseas guest shift her dates”

    That sounds awful painfull 🙂

I’ll translate that – H1 & H2 are giving her advice on how to handle a complaint that could bring on an early election.

I think at last count it was 16 – the number of replacement guest speakers we tried. All were interested in speaking but none could make last night. Sounds like a good time was had by those in attendance (around 30 people, which is bloody good with no guest speaker!) anyway.

I reckon those of you who can’t say anything nice are just envious of our fab Drinking Liberally events, both in Auckland and Wellington, and perhaps you should get off your arses and organise your own thing, then you’d find you didn’t have much spare time to make snarky comments about other people’s stuff. DL is not for you, it’s for those of a leftward persuasion, so if you’re not happy then frankly my dear I don’t give a damn.

As for Margaret Wilson’s international guest – I don’t imagine she gets all that many opportunities to host a Supreme Court Justice from the USA, so I’m not surprised she bumped us. But some people would rather see conspiracy theories at every turn…

Julie: I think it was one of the Standardistas who remarked upon the early criticism of Drinking Liberally by the righties here that Drinking Conservatively, if it were to be formed, would consist of two or three people in leather armchairs sharing a bottle of Dom Perignon while the other 20 or 30 shared a jug of beer.

Cheers L, that gave me a chuckle 🙂

Lew: Don’t be daft, they wouldn’t share a bottle of Dom!

    They’d have one each.
