Goff calmly and systematically rips Key and the government apart on Friday’s RWC fiasco. Armstrong calls it Goff’s “best speech in a long time” – see Goff flays Nats over Rugby World Cup chaos.

It is good. Even the National MP’s cakcalling died away. Good to see that the world is a better and brighter place (and not just as I have killed this pesky cold that has me in bed for the week).

  2. He gave them a hiding alright. Mind you, it was a well-deserved one…

  3. Craig Glen Eden 3

Well done Phil Goff, he told it straight and factual. As for Key manning up well thats never going to happen, he is as wet as landed eel.

    • Jim Nald 3.1

Key’s incompetence followed by scapegoating of anything and everything within grasp is a pathological trait meticulously nurtured from the corrupt culture of his previous workplace.

Kiwis now have a new tory story to share with the world.

“The Government’s Nude Prime Mincer” is a short tale, thanks to the Party Central debacle, about two MPs (McCully and Joyce) who promise New Zealand a nude Prime Mincer who is invisible to those unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent. When the nude Prime Donkey parades before his subjects for photo ops at RWC opening night, the people cry out, “But he isn’t taking responsibility for anything at all!” This new Kiwi tale, in typical donkey fashion, is heavily plagiarised, err, borrowed from Han Christian Andersen’s “Kejserens nye Klæder”, and has just been launched in conjunction with RWC and is being translated into many languages in international papers and on the world wide web.

    Even Duncan Garner applauded Goff

    Well DOne Goff
    KIck the bastards
Give em what theyve been giving you

    • EagleWarrior 4.1

I think Duncan only supported Goff on this one because he was personally affected by the Transport stuff up. Although Duncan is more upset that John Key forgot to pick him up in his Limo.

  5. Good to see Goff showing some passion. I particularly liked how he cuts through all the media propaganda and dissects the issues to show exactly how things went down. McCully’s buck passing and the jinx of John Key could ruin the RWC… definitely the wrong Govt. for the times.

The biggest FAIL belongs to Nact

  7. big bruv 7

Goodness me, you lot really are grasping at straws.

Still, if it makes you feel a little bit better about the impending hammering you are about to take in the election then who am I to deny you your one moment of satisfaction.

BTW, he hardly “flayed” the Nat’s, the PM (the most popular in our nations history) will still be supported by 70% of the nation, he will still be the one they think (including many Labour voters) should lead the country and he will still be PM come the new year.

    • I like the way you equate “popular” with “did not display the incompetence he’s accused of” – especially in a comment prefaced with “grasping at straws.”

    • Joe Bloggs 7.2

Oh be charitable Bruv – let them have their 15 seconds in the spotlight.

So what if Goff sparked on all two cylinders? … it won’t change the outcome in November. Not if all the disaffected ex-Labour voters are to be believed

      • bbfloyd 7.2.1

as usual, the only contribution blow job is offering is childish insult… better than your usual standard blowie…. but silly schoolboy facepulling would still be a step up for you lad…

of course, reality is something you children havn’t learnt to cope with yet……

        • Joe Bloggs 7.2.1.1

Parading your own moral and socio-political virtues again floyd?

You should save your spittle-laden invective for someone who cares.

      • Puddleglum 7.2.2

JB, it seems that you and big bruv are essentially conceding that that was a very impressive, straight-talking speech from Goff. I conclude that by virtue of the fact that your response has been to talk about what might happen in November rather than anything about the speech given now.

Clearly there was nothing specific about Goff’s performance you could criticise in a remotely credible way.

        • Deadly_NZ 7.2.2.1

That is the big difference between Goff and Key. Goff is passionate, and can talk without having to continuously read carefully constructed phrases and platitudes. Key never even shows up with out his sunglassed minders ready to defend him from an angry OAP’s with brolly’s and Zimmer frames and to give him said phrases and platitudes. And where was Key in this debate ?? Missing in action as usual when the hard questions come out.

        • Joe Bloggs 7.2.2.2

Actually Puddle I thought that Goff performed very credibly – at least in terms of showing a little spine and for finally appearing to be a credible opposition.

As you know I disagree with his view that the Government are completely to blame for the organisational shortcomings around the Auckland waterfront. I accept that McCully bears some responsibility – particularly for taking Len Brown’s assurances that everything was ready at face value.

But the events on the night of the opening ceremony are rightly sheeted home toVeolia, the transport committee and the mayor who were charged with delivering a positive outcome.

So as far as Goff’s performance went? I give him 2 out of 10 for substance, but a solid 6 out of 10 for effort.

[lprent: That tends to be the moderators call rather than yours. And for all of his obvious flaws, BB does not usually show the ones that attract our moderating attention (as much as our online alter-ego’s may disagree with the moderators priorities). But you should usually put a point with your statement because otherwise it does rather attract our attention. We start by giving a warning… ]

      @ Big Bruv

“…the PM (the most popular in our nations history) will still be supported by 70% of the nation…”

BULLSHIT !!! Key is no more popular than Clark was.

As for your erroneous 70% figure, tragically you’ve allowed the Herald to hopelessly confuse you. About a year ago, the Herald Digi Poll took the unprecedented step of presenting its ‘Preferred PM’ stats solely on the basis of DECIDED respondents. Hence, Key’s support suddenly shot up overnight from early 50s to 70 %.

All other major Polls continue to include the (considerable number of) UNDECIDEDs/DONT KNOWS/NONE OF THE ABOVEs. And, in these, Key remains in the 50s.

      • Joe Bloggs 7.4.1

It must be a real downer for you swordie when you see the results of polls like the latest Roy Morgan poll

The latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Poll shows support for Prime Minister John Key’s National-led Government is virtually unchanged at 61.5% (up 5.5%). Support for Key’s National Party is 57% (up 5% – the highest since October 2009)…

Support for Opposition Parties is at 38.5% (down 5.5%) — Labour Party 26% (down 3.5% – the lowest since March 2009), Greens 7.5% (down 1.5%)…

…The latest New Zealand Roy Morgan Government Confidence Rating has risen 0.5 points to 132 — the highest since March 2011 with 60% (up 1%) of New Zealanders saying New Zealand is ‘heading in the right direction’

Goodness what a pasting – it must be a rogue poll. Surely National can’t be that far ahead? Surely Labour can’t be performing that poorly in the eyes of the electorate?

  8. MarkM 8

Goffs best speech in a long time is akin to saying General Custers best last stand in a long time or Lord Cardigans best charge

  9. queenstfarmer 9

Good performance from Phil. I have found it remarkable how he transited from the competent, measured, intelligent Phil who was one of the best ministers in the last Govt, to the reactionary, flailing Phil he has usually been since becoming leader of the opposition.

The first step is he needs to pick his targets (eg saying John Key should fire a minister for “bad manners” sledging of the Aussies is just idiotic). He does that well here, and lands some good blows.

  10. Tiger Mountain 10

Shonkey could be found standing, pants unzipped, behind a sheep with its head stuck in a wire fence with a 10 year old girl under each arm and still be worshipped by ’Bruv and “Rodbeater” et al.

It would not be the case for many kiwis though, and Goff will show a lot better in the TV debates than some expect. Command of detail, reasonable ‘dikshun’ er diction, differentiation of policy-$15 min wage immediately, no asset sales, apprenticeships rather than the dole, CGT etc will trump Shonkey’s aspirational burble script for enough voters to close things right up come election day.

  11. big bruv 11

    Tiger

You forget that Goff is a proven liar, he will be destroyed in the debates.

    • marsman 11.1

You are such a yawn big bruv.

    • Tiger Mountain 11.2

Heh, I would say Shonkey is more economical with the truth. Personal views on ’81 tour, personal shareholdings and conflicts of interest, Hollowmen membership, why did he sack Worth?, BMWs etc. anyone can make a fine list. Johnny was a finance capital parasite for a discredited bank, some kiwis like that he is ‘like’ them-an inarticulate wanker, but reality bites eventually.

People cannot eat aspiration for ever, it is way too early for your celebrations Bruv.

    • Ianupnorth 11.3

And key is squeeky clean, what with him forgetting his rail shares, family trusts, being told about the BMW’s, shall I go on.

    • big bruv 12.1

Yes…the SIS being one of his most recent blatant lies.

      • Tiger Mountain 12.1.1

Face it Bruv, Shonkey is slippery and ‘relaxed’ so has got away with many things to date with his fan club. Phil Goff is more definitive and hence believable, but has to be way more careful tactically than shapeshifter Key.

The top spook says; look, there, I annotated my notes so it must be so. Believe that you believe anything. You are diverting as per usual and did not attempt to answer one substantive point I made-e.g. Johnny’s Hollowman membership or ’81 tour position. Why is this important? Well it exposes lies, untruths, credibility or otherwise which should apply to the Prime Mincer too.

      • bbfloyd 12.1.2

Agree. Women hate was one of the most unsavory features of the right in the 08 election lead up. It is barely below the surface with many torys, enough whiskey (Alasdair) or articulate political challenge and it appears.

Goff’s performance in the House yesterday bodes well for the one on one election debates with Key.

If he’s as sharp and to the point he could expose Key’s big weaknesses of being ill-informed, shallow and insincere.

I hope Goff continues to highlight the issues and doesn’t fall into the personal popularity trap.

And am I wrong in detecting a shift in MSM? Slight, maybe, but it seems some commentators are starting to be more balanced and not so in awe of Key.

  14. Richard 14

Goff needs to look that good way more often

    • rod 14.1

Yes Richard, but when are we going to see him on all news chanels, prime time? don’t hold your breath.

  15. This is not the first time Goff has demolished Key in a debate . In fact Goff usually wins the debate in parliament .What is different with this one is the Goff has had some publicity. The Nat’s however are a vicious lot and will be all,out for revenge , Goff needs to watch his back . Crosby-Textor and the Nat’s dirty tricks brigade will be working overtime .

  16. Blue 16

    Hmpf! Dead man talking.

  17. HC 17

Excellent speech. We need more of this (during election campaign meetings), and then the coming months may see a turn in the over-rated, misleading polls also!

  18. This explains why John Key / Murray McCully are not pointing the finger of blame at the Auckland Transport and Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Developement Council Controlled Organisations (CCOs).

Because THEY appointed the unelected businesspeople who are ultimately responsible for Auckland Transport and Auckland ‘Events’.

    Remember this?

    http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA1008/S00471/appointments-to-boards-of-auckland-council-ccos.htm

Appointments to Boards of Auckland Council CCOs
    Monday, 30 August 2010, 2:34 pm
    Press Release: New Zealand Government

The list of directors and chairs for the Auckland Council’s new council controlled organisations was agreed to by Cabinet last week, Minister for Local Government Rodney Hide said.

Minister Hide said that those chosen were the elite in their respective fields, and testament to the quality of structure and organisation the new Auckland Council represents.

“The Government has been fortunate in being able to appoint men and women of such high calibre. In New Zealand, we have a small, but rich, pool of talent, and these are people whose talents would be welcome anywhere in the world. What is more, they are all Aucklanders,” he said.

“This CCO team has extensive experience in a multitude of sectors, from finance to diplomacy. It includes a solid foundation of eleven people who have experience in working on the boards of the Auckland region’s existing CCOs.”

Transport Minister Steven Joyce also welcomed the appointments to Auckland Transport, which will be chaired by Mark Ford – currently chairman of the Auckland Transition Agency.

Auckland Transport will replace the nine separate existing transport entities across the city.

Mr Joyce says the result will be an agency equipped to provide the focus and continuity in decision-making needed to deliver a transport network that supports Auckland’s growth and economic success.

“Given the role and functions of Auckland Transport, it is imperative to ensure the board has a good mix of commercial, infrastructure and local government experience. I’m also pleased with the continuity that will be brought to the table by having both the current and former chairs of ARTA serving on the new board.

“I am very impressed with the makeup of this Board and look forward to working alongside them and the new Auckland Council following next month’s elections,” said Mr Joyce. ”

    • HC 18.1

Penny – I totally agree with you! Where is the hideous Hide now, where is his defence? Well, now National has by way of a smart and aggressive coup seized ACT, in order to ensure they will be in power again, so Hide is let off for all that he did. Of course it suited National what he did re Auckland Council, because they have the same agenda. I am impressed about you standing in Epsom. But the rich and middle class living there tend to love ACT and National, so you are like David taking on Goliath there. Best of luck anyway, there will at least be a few that will support your more common sense approach.

  19. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=10752185

My comment on David Farrar’s NZ Herald article:

    FYI.

    “01:00 PM Friday, 16 Sep 2011

In my considered opinion, the rwc debacle on Friday 9 September 2011, is proof that the Council Controlled Organisation (cco) model has been a failure. The reality is that there is very little Auckland Council ‘control’ over the Auckland Transport and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development ccos.

The Auckland Council can only influence ccos through their ‘Statements of Intent’.

In my view, it is the unlected appointed businesspeople on the Boards of Directors for each of these cco’s who should be held directly accountable, along with this National /act Government which forced through the underpinning Supercity legislative framework which entrenched this cco model.

Auckland citizens and ratepayers had no say on the underpinning Supercity legislation; no say on whether or not we wanted the cco model, and no say on the appointment of these unelected businesspeople who are responsible for these ccos.

Where is /was the democratic accountability? Penny Bright “
