      Key’s incompetence followed by scapegoating of anything and everything within grasp is a pathological trait meticulously nurtured from the corrupt culture of his previous workplace.

      Kiwis now have a new tory story to share with the world.

      “The Government’s Nude Prime Mincer” is a short tale, thanks to the Party Central debacle, about two MPs (McCully and Joyce) who promise New Zealand a nude Prime Mincer who is invisible to those unfit for their positions, stupid, or incompetent. When the nude Prime Donkey parades before his subjects for photo ops at RWC opening night, the people cry out, “But he isn’t taking responsibility for anything at all!” This new Kiwi tale, in typical donkey fashion, is heavily plagiarised, err, borrowed from Han Christian Andersen’s “Kejserens nye Klæder”, and has just been launched in conjunction with RWC and is being translated into many languages in international papers and on the world wide web.

    Good to see Goff showing some passion. I particularly liked how he cuts through all the media propaganda and dissects the issues to show exactly how things went down. McCully’s buck passing and the jinx of John Key could ruin the RWC… definitely the wrong Govt. for the times.

    BTW, he hardly “flayed” the Nat’s, the PM (the most popular in our nations history) will still be supported by 70% of the nation, he will still be the one they think (including many Labour voters) should lead the country and he will still be PM come the new year.

        JB, it seems that you and big bruv are essentially conceding that that was a very impressive, straight-talking speech from Goff. I conclude that by virtue of the fact that your response has been to talk about what might happen in November rather than anything about the speech given now.

        Clearly there was nothing specific about Goff’s performance you could criticise in a remotely credible way.

          That is the big difference between Goff and Key. Goff is passionate, and can talk without having to continuously read carefully constructed phrases and platitudes. Key never even shows up with out his sunglassed minders ready to defend him from an angry OAP’s with brolly’s and Zimmer frames and to give him said phrases and platitudes. And where was Key in this debate ?? Missing in action as usual when the hard questions come out.

          Actually Puddle I thought that Goff performed very credibly – at least in terms of showing a little spine and for finally appearing to be a credible opposition.

          As you know I disagree with his view that the Government are completely to blame for the organisational shortcomings around the Auckland waterfront. I accept that McCully bears some responsibility – particularly for taking Len Brown’s assurances that everything was ready at face value.

          But the events on the night of the opening ceremony are rightly sheeted home toVeolia, the transport committee and the mayor who were charged with delivering a positive outcome.

          So as far as Goff’s performance went? I give him 2 out of 10 for substance, but a solid 6 out of 10 for effort.

      As for your erroneous 70% figure, tragically you’ve allowed the Herald to hopelessly confuse you. About a year ago, the Herald Digi Poll took the unprecedented step of presenting its ‘Preferred PM’ stats solely on the basis of DECIDED respondents. Hence, Key’s support suddenly shot up overnight from early 50s to 70 %.

      All other major Polls continue to include the (considerable number of) UNDECIDEDs/DONT KNOWS/NONE OF THE ABOVEs. And, in these, Key remains in the 50s.

    Good performance from Phil. I have found it remarkable how he transited from the competent, measured, intelligent Phil who was one of the best ministers in the last Govt, to the reactionary, flailing Phil he has usually been since becoming leader of the opposition.

    The first step is he needs to pick his targets (eg saying John Key should fire a minister for “bad manners” sledging of the Aussies is just idiotic). He does that well here, and lands some good blows.

    Shonkey could be found standing, pants unzipped, behind a sheep with its head stuck in a wire fence with a 10 year old girl under each arm and still be worshipped by ’Bruv and “Rodbeater” et al.

    It would not be the case for many kiwis though, and Goff will show a lot better in the TV debates than some expect. Command of detail, reasonable ‘dikshun’ er diction, differentiation of policy-$15 min wage immediately, no asset sales, apprenticeships rather than the dole, CGT etc will trump Shonkey’s aspirational burble script for enough voters to close things right up come election day.

    Goff’s performance in the House yesterday bodes well for the one on one election debates with Key.

    If he’s as sharp and to the point he could expose Key’s big weaknesses of being ill-informed, shallow and insincere.

    I hope Goff continues to highlight the issues and doesn’t fall into the personal popularity trap.

    And am I wrong in detecting a shift in MSM? Slight, maybe, but it seems some commentators are starting to be more balanced and not so in awe of Key.

    This is not the first time Goff has demolished Key in a debate . In fact Goff usually wins the debate in parliament .What is different with this one is the Goff has had some publicity. The Nat’s however are a vicious lot and will be all,out for revenge , Goff needs to watch his back . Crosby-Textor and the Nat’s dirty tricks brigade will be working overtime .

    Because THEY appointed the unelected businesspeople who are ultimately responsible for Auckland Transport and Auckland ‘Events’.

    The list of directors and chairs for the Auckland Council’s new council controlled organisations was agreed to by Cabinet last week, Minister for Local Government Rodney Hide said.

    Minister Hide said that those chosen were the elite in their respective fields, and testament to the quality of structure and organisation the new Auckland Council represents.

    “The Government has been fortunate in being able to appoint men and women of such high calibre. In New Zealand, we have a small, but rich, pool of talent, and these are people whose talents would be welcome anywhere in the world. What is more, they are all Aucklanders,” he said.

    “This CCO team has extensive experience in a multitude of sectors, from finance to diplomacy. It includes a solid foundation of eleven people who have experience in working on the boards of the Auckland region’s existing CCOs.”

    Transport Minister Steven Joyce also welcomed the appointments to Auckland Transport, which will be chaired by Mark Ford – currently chairman of the Auckland Transition Agency.

    Auckland Transport will replace the nine separate existing transport entities across the city.

    Mr Joyce says the result will be an agency equipped to provide the focus and continuity in decision-making needed to deliver a transport network that supports Auckland’s growth and economic success.

    “Given the role and functions of Auckland Transport, it is imperative to ensure the board has a good mix of commercial, infrastructure and local government experience. I’m also pleased with the continuity that will be brought to the table by having both the current and former chairs of ARTA serving on the new board.

    “I am very impressed with the makeup of this Board and look forward to working alongside them and the new Auckland Council following next month’s elections,” said Mr Joyce. ”

Well, now National has by way of a smart and aggressive coup seized ACT, in order to ensure they will be in power again, so Hide is let off for all that he did. Of course it suited National what he did re Auckland Council, because they have the same agenda. I am impressed about you standing in Epsom. But the rich and middle class living there tend to love ACT and National, so you are like David taking on Goliath there. Best of luck anyway, there will at least be a few that will support your more common sense approach.

    Auckland citizens and ratepayers had no say on the underpinning Supercity legislation; no say on whether or not we wanted the cco model, and no say on the appointment of these unelected businesspeople who are responsible for these ccos.

    reagan and george w both got 2 terms which shows that elections can be won via control of the message. some well placed dog whistles and the usual deception, dishonesty and distractions as your media mates oblige by following your script. Reagan did no debates and no serious interviews for his re-election it’s a masterclass in propoganda, one journo spent the entire campaign trying to get a single question in, he didn’t.

    It’s got jack to do with actual achievement, ability to lead or what’s best hollistically for NZ and how often have you seen Nats cut up in the house for it to never make the MSM or no follow ups on Blindtrust gate, pansy, worth, ECAN and the many other abuses of due process….the list is long but its nowhere to be seen in the MSM.

    Sideshow and his dealing room can swan about doing what they damm well please, they know the games rigged but being a banker thats par for his course so its business as usual. We really need a new voice with no strings attached like the guardian in the UK.
