Labour Leadership Contest – the final meeting will be streamed

Today the candidates have their last public meeting. This is scheduled for 7:30 pm tonight at the Christian Cullen Lounge, Addington Raceway, Christchurch.
TV3 is going to stream the speeches. Go to www.3news.co.nz at 7:45 pm if you want to watch.
The travelling tour has been mostly a positive uniting experience. New Zealand Council has made it clear that all candidates and their supporters should be on their best behaviour.
There have been a few unsavoury incidents involving social media and Duncan Garner. Can I urge everyone to keep it positive?
A recent Te Kareke Digipoll reported that when Maori voters were asked who would do the best job leading Labour into the next election 37% said Shane Jones, 22% said David Cunliffe and 8% said Grant Robertson. Amongst Labour Party supporters 39% said Shane Jones, 25% Cunliffe and 9% Robertson. Jones was considered by a vast majority to be by far the best candidate to represent Maori issues.
Shane Jones has now released a video which as far as I can tell is available on facebook only.
And David Cunliffe has released a third video.
Just to repeat the mantra about voting …
People entitled to attend the meetings include members, former members and new members who sign up at the door.
Media can attend but for the preliminaries and the speeches only.
If you are going you should get to the meeting early as there will be a vetting process and this could take some time. People should bring their membership cards or ortherwise photo ID so that they can be identified. Photos and social media can be taken and used during the open part of the meeting.
And a reminder that current members and those who have been financial members of the Party sometime between January 1 2011 and August 22 2013 but have not yet paid their membership for 2013 can renew their membership and vote, so long as they have done so before 12.00am on Friday 6 September. New members will not be able to vote.
If you were a member or have joined up again but have not received your papers you can chase this up by emailing reception@labour.org.nz.
Finally for your vote to count you will have to list all candidates in preference. The second preferences of the third ranked candidate will then be distributed amongst the other candidates. There is an online voting option that works well and I recommend this.
And just in case anyone is not aware of this I am a supporter of David Cunliffe and a member of his LEC.

Except in; Labour Supporters’ preferred leader, where Cunliffe (25%) narrowly edges out Don’t Know (22%). Although with a greater margin of error with smaller sample size (408 LS vs 1016 All Maori MoErr +/-3.1%) and possible systematic bias (ie if only Maori with landlines are sampled), this may not be statistically significant.
The Jones preference probably is real; baffling, but real. More understandable on the Maori representation questions (he is head of Labour Maori caucus?). However even his result on; All Maori preferred leader (37%), is barely above the combined DK/NOTA/O (33%). Though at least that’s better than Robertson struggling to match the combined NOTA/ O results.

Awesome meeting. All three spoke very well, very eloquently, and with great humour. Well deserved standing ovation at the end.
Good audience as well. There looked to be a number standing at the back. It wasn’t easy to get into the hall either, with the Breakers playing next door.
I’m definitely enthused. Had a chance to speak with David and Shane and was impressed with how easily it was to relate to both.
Only (minor) frustration was that the small group wearing ‘I’m with Grant’ stickers tended to cheer overly enthusiastically for everything he said. Fair cop, I guess – just felt a little contrived and wasn’t really reflective of how other people I spoke to rated his performance.
Having said that – no matter who wins, I’ll support. And I probably wouldn’t have said that at the start of the night.
So it seems the revolution will be televised after all
