For very human reasons former Labour Party President and Labour List MP Maryan Street has confirmed that if Jacinda Ardern wins the Mt Albert by election this weekend she will not seek to return to Parliament via the list. From her facebook page:
I am happy to confirm that I will not be taking up a place in Parliament as a List MP after the Mt Albert by-election. This will pave the way for the return of Raymond Huo to Parliament, something I fully support.
I have thought long and hard about this choice and have decided that I can be just as effective on issues dear to me outside Parliament as inside – perhaps even more so.
Besides which, I have discovered weekends.
The campaign for a law change to allow End of Life Choice has gained a powerful momentum with the petition in my name to Parliament’s Health Select Committee, where submissions are still being heard. I am heartened that it has become an issue with wide support throughout the community and across the entire political spectrum. I look forward to advancing that campaign further.
My very best wishes go to Jacinda Ardern and Raymond Huo.
Kia kaha Maryan.
The jigsaw is coming together well. Lots of wonderful minds at work. Thanks all.
Yes, very pleasing.
What did this politician achieve exactly?
No laws past of her initiative.
Went backwards in Nelson.
No policies of note.
Don’t be such a pillock, Ad. Maryan Street has been a Minister of Housing and of ACC. She’s raised a number of ethical issues and put them before the house – trying to ban the importation of goods produced by slave labour, promoting end of life choices, promoting ethical investment policies for crown agencies… I would call these policies of note. She’s also been a good team member and that’s clearly part of her reasoning in this announcement.
So the minister in charge of the housing stock, when said stock was in desperate need of an upgrade?
But here the real kicker red-blooded, what laws did she sponsor? You listed nothing. Just a long wish list.
So slavery, I note it does not include prisoners from jails in the USA, which are effectively the new slave class.
Ad, had been pretty consistent on calling out a group of fossils within labour, (please note: my terminology not Ad’s) which Maryan Street is a part of. You may not like it, but he has been consistent.
Personally, I think of Street as just another member of the liberal elect who lacks moral fiber to be honest with herself. She good at saying all the right words, but has been totally acquiescent on neo-con economics.
“promoting end of life choices” is the weasel phrase of the millennium.
You’re a sour old prick Ad. No wonder every other bastard scoffs at the self-vaunted ‘intelligentsia’ of the Left. Get over your arrogant self man !
Not being one to ponce around admiring myself……good on you Maryann Street.
You wonder why TS is a bit sus’ for many people nowadays ? Thank you Ad and CV. Not really.
Labour Party needs a renewal of strong talent who can achieve stuff.
She wasn’t one.
Her Nelson electorate evaluated her.
Very pleased to hear this from Maryan.
I’m pleased about this too. Thanks Maryan, I think you made a very good call here.
It’s all lining up very nicely indeed.
I guess you gotta know when to fold them, know when to roll them…
By “roll them”, do you mean “administer, lovingly of course, a lethal injection”?
Good one, indiana.
Some of course never learn to ‘walk away’, let alone ‘run’.
And some did- like Key. I’d like to know from what, though.
Maryan is running towards something- even though it’s a wee bit of a throwaway comment, she “has discovered weekends.” We don’t always appreciate the sacrifice that public life and service involves.
So, well done, Maryan Street. Quality is shown not only by what you do, but also what you choose not to do.
