The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...

To understand the determination of the soldiers one need only see the ferocity of the grandmothers when their family has been threatened.

A timely reminder, one that shatters two strangely persistent fantasies, namely:
1) National could do a deal with the Greens, if only the silly Greens would do "environment only"
2) Next year it won't make much difference if we get a Nat-ACT or Lab-Green government. (In fact, it will be the biggest difference this century).

nice one, thanks arkie.
Thanks Arkie and Weka.
Because I had nothing much better to do in my hotel away from home I watched the parliamentary channel and a rerun of the day’s proceedings.
I watched with interest a "contribution" (I'm being kind here) from ACT list MP Damien Smith on the Companies (Directors Duties) Amendment Bill.
What I saw was a pathetic largely incoherent rambling diatribe from a member who I thought may have been on the turps beforehand and perhaps thinks Karl Marx is still alive.
If this is the best that ACT can muster then god help our people if these clowns ever get into government.
Even National's David Bennett – who can't say one sentence without adding something about the evils of socialism – can do it with more class.
Where do they find these people???
Everyone should watch the Parliament channel. It's not pretty, but it is revealing.
Your point about ACT is one that needs much more media scrutiny in the run-up to the election. For Key and English, ACT were merely an Epsom add-on (they gave Hide a job but it was definitely a Key/English/Joyce government).
In 2023 Seymour will not be settling for that, not with 5-10% of the vote. A change of government would mean several ACT ministers in Cabinet. Ponder that, and shiver.
But hey, David Clark went for a bike ride, so "both sides both sides same same …". Yeah, nah.
