A crop of worthy petitions for you consideration:
Labour’s petition to “Fund our health system properly so New Zealanders can get the treatment they need”.
An ActionStation campaign to “fix our public broadcasting” (fund RNZ!).
A community campaign to save the Waitaha – Morgan Gorge from hydroelectric development.
An Avaaz petition to world leaders to “Protect the Paris Agreement”.
The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...

“A community campaign to save the Waitaha – Morgan Gorge from hydroelectric development.”
Why would you be against renewable energy?!
Of course I’m not opposed to renewable energy, but we’re allowed to think carefully and debate where we put it.
+ 1
And if we want to think about renewable, it’s not possible to create new rivers. They are a finite resource, so even if we think it’s ok to dam them (I don’t), then eventually we will run out if we think that renewable energy and perpetual growth are compatible. Time to live within our means and look at what steady state energy would be.
So you want to live in a static world? What an odd idea.
Hydro is by far the most effective renewable power source. If you want to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels that is the most realist solution. What you seem to be saying is you would prefer to simply remove energy sources without like for like replacement.
No, that’s not what weka said.
The odd idea is your – that we can grow infinitely on a finite world. In fact, it’s completely delusional.
No it’s not. As weka pointed out: it’s not possible to create new rivers.

No issue with Renewable Energy if such a thing actually exists… Maybe Low Carbon at best for the Waitaha River proposal..
Clearly R S hasn’t bothered to acquaint him/herself on the Morgan Gorge hydro proposal that sadly DoC have agreed to in principle! despite being inconsistent with the legislation and setting a disturbing precedent for other Public conservation Stewardship Areas. i.e.
“Granting of the concessions is directly in conflict with the purpose of the Conservation Act and the DoC West Coast Conservation Management Strategy. Furthermore, the proposed scheme is contrary to the intent of use of stewardship land.
The Morgan Gorge, a spectacular and dominating schist gorge separating the front country from the back country on the Waitaha River, is an outstanding natural feature in an outstanding natural landscape worthy of preservation and protection in its own right for the benefit of all of New Zealand.
An independent electricity industry expert has determined that power from the proposal is not needed for many years. There is no significant demand for extra power on the West Coast, and the National Grid has recently been upgraded to meet any foreseeable increased power demand on the West Coast.
Other more viable, likely cheaper, less destructive alternatives exist for power generation on the West Coast. Previously consented hydro proposals including schemes on the Arnold River and at Stockton are available to develop. There is no justification for the destruction of such an outstanding natural wilderness feature within public conservation estate on power supply grounds.”
