While I might not put it quite as vividly as Zetetic, I certainly agree that Carter was very foolish to post anything comparing Key to a dictator. That sort of tactic is National Party territory, we don’t want to go there:
The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...

Ironic that Farrar should describe the EFA as “a bad step towards a more authoritarian New Zealand” when his beloved National Ltd® now wants to allow some 20 government agencies the right to wander in and out of my house, secretly video and bug my workplace, seize any computer they want, prevent everyone from driving where they want, and follow and track the movements of my family without judicial warrant, oversight or consideration and compensation for the consequences should such actions be detrimental to individuals.
I was out at dinner last night and saw a strange bloke – is it Chris Carter in disguise?
Three slight differences r0b:
1) Farrar is not an elected MP
2) Farrar paid for the billboards via his own pocket and donations to the Free Speech Coalition
3) Farrar did not compare Clark to Mugabe – the billboard made the point that the EFA was something Mugabe would have been proud of
You might be trying to do a damage-limitation exercise, whereas I commend Zetetic for his/her honesty in calling Carter for the buffoon that he is.

If you look at them through your blue tinted lenses perhaps.
1) Farrar is not an elected MP
No, but Brash and the others who funded it were, and Farrar is National’s semi official propaganda agent. What we also have is paragon of “virtue” Bill English comparing Clark’s government to Mugabe – not on some blog – but in the House.
2) Farrar paid for the billboards via his own pocket and donations to the Free Speech Coalition
Donations from National MPs.
3) Farrar did not compare Clark to Mugabe – the billboard made the point that the EFA was something Mugabe would have been proud of
Oh yes, of course, huge difference, silly me.
You might be trying to do a damage-limitation exercise
Oh no, Carter is a twit, but let’s keep him in context. While National are happy to run this kind of thing as a semi-official campaign, Labour should have nothing to do with such tactics.
Quite improper to compare Mr Key with Il Duce. Mr Hide does a far better impersonation. Let’s be clear, not a good thing for Mr Carter to do – he is now pretty clearly damaged political goods and should be thinking of a career change. Equally, we need to toughen up. For example, the dictatorial approach to the Supercity, as well as the capacity to imitate Il Duce, makes to comparison with Mr Hide quite appropriate.
“Equally, we need to toughen up”
Aye clearly Key saw the funny side of it …………… and the whole episode has given me a good chuckle.
Our politicians get a far easier ride than the piss taking that occurs in many other countries.
