Stand by Your Man

Written By: - Date published: 8:48 am, February 19th, 2015 - 107 comments

Sometime in the next few days, Winston Peters will announce whether or not he will stand in the Northland by-election. He should run unchallenged by the left and Labour and the Greens should endorse him for the greater good.

Peters leaking everywhere

Written By: - Date published: 3:47 pm, November 17th, 2011 - 52 comments

Winston is leaking details of the teapot tapes.  Plenty of other rumours doing the rounds, including a TV1 poll tonight that shows no damage to the Nats on voting intentions yet.

Banks & Peters

Written By: - Date published: 4:34 pm, November 11th, 2011 - 46 comments

So the meeting has taken place, and Epsom has been asked to hold its nose and vote for failed Nat retread John Banks, and with him on his coat tails failed Nat retread Don Brash.  Nice one.  In other news, Winston Peters is riding a boost in the polls all the way to the televised minor parties leaders’ debate.  The Nats will be spitting.

A footnote to history

In which which Winston Peters rules out working with any possible government.  Not that it matters, but, way to make your party irrelevant Winston.

The Peters principle

Written By: - Date published: 7:16 am, August 2nd, 2011 - 70 comments

There’s been a lot of coverage of Winston Peters lately.  Most of his announcements have been perfectly predictable, but for me there have been two real surprises.

A hell of a speech

Written By: - Date published: 10:40 am, March 22nd, 2011 - 74 comments

“The worldwide recession is not your fault… You are being softened up for cuts in social spending… It’s easy to see the people this government is looking after. If you are a bank boss on $5.6million, helping cause a recession, you get an extra five thousand a week. If you are on the minimum wage – you get an extra 25 cents an hour.”

Principles

So John Key has flip flopped and decided to rule out working with Winston Peters again.  He’s trying to portray that as a principled decision, about running an “aspirational” government.  So why did he need to spend so many months working out what his principles are?  No, it’s a political decision.  Key thinks he can squeeze a little more milage out of flogging the dead horse that is Winston Peters.

New Zealand’s Electoral Wild Card

Written By: - Date published: 10:34 am, January 18th, 2011 - 26 comments

Will New Zealand First get back into Parliament after the election? If they do, it changes everything. A range of new governing coalitions become possible – both National and Labour-led. Can the Left trust Winston Peters to side with Labour over National? Could a Left+NZF government work? Jenny looks at the issues.

Early thoughts on the Botany by-election

Written By: - Date published: 10:30 am, December 16th, 2010 - 28 comments

Pansy Wong’s resignation in disgrace makes four ministers and three MPs lost by John Key’s government in two years (and more who have escaped scot-free). Now, we face another by-election – on March 5th, Botany will choose Wong’s successor. Here’s my take on the probable candidates and the party positioning.

NZF poll is wrong

Written By: - Date published: 7:34 am, December 6th, 2010 - 77 comments

Great excitement in the Sunday papers over Winston Peters / NZF.  “Poll puts NZ First back in contention”!  “Peters the kingmaker again”!  Don’t believe a word of it.

Crown ownership by any other name would smell as bad

Written By: - Date published: 2:00 pm, September 6th, 2010 - 13 comments

Unnoticed amongst all the earthquake coverage was a small article in the Weekend Dompost on the foreshore and seabed deal. Apparently, ‘public domain’ will no longer appear in the new legislation. Instead, we’ll have a new name, possibly ‘takutaimoana’, Te Reo for ‘seabed’. That sound you can hear Winston Peters is rubbing his hands with glee.

ACT’s demise bad news for neo-liberals

Written By: - Date published: 6:33 am, August 20th, 2010 - 37 comments

No wonder Winston Peters is smiling. His personal vendetta with Hide must be at on the forefront of his mind as he watches his nemesis sink.

But what does ACT’s impending demise actually mean for other parties? It’s not good news for National.

Peters vs Key

Written By: - Date published: 8:27 pm, August 18th, 2010 - 53 comments

TV3 is reporting Winston Peters will standing at the next election… against John Key in Helensville. Those are candidate meetings I for one wouldn’t want to miss!

Key and Peters best buddies?

Written By: - Date published: 7:00 am, August 4th, 2010 - 58 comments

Key hasn’t ruled out working with Winston after 2011. This seems like a huge miscalculation. Not only has he added legitimacy to the re-animation of this political zombie, but he has also cut the legs out from under the right’s “Winston is the devil” campaign. That giant sucking sound you hear? That’s DPF’s head imploding.

NZF dodges the Lhaws bullet

Written By: - Date published: 4:27 pm, July 28th, 2010 - 43 comments

Must admit my heart sank this morning when I read that “Winston Peters and his former adviser Michael Laws are to team up again as part of a “relaunch” of the party this year”…

John Carter: sleeper-agent for the Left?

Written By: - Date published: 10:04 pm, April 12th, 2010 - 20 comments

How dumb was John Carter to use his speech at the Grey Power National Conference to have a cry because Grey Power’s participating in an inquiry into aged care by Labour, the Greens, and the Progressives? You don’t try to bully Grey Power with its 100,000 members. The grey voters will be leaving National in droves.

Will Winston be back in 2011?

Written By: - Date published: 7:41 am, April 10th, 2010 - 100 comments

In politics nothing lasts forever. That is it seems, except the Rt Hon Winston Peters. The latest Roy Morgan poll has NZ First at 3%, just below the 5% threshold (Nats 49%, Lab 33%). With Peters once again creeping back into the media spotlight, you’ve got to wonder: Will Rodney Hide’s nightmare come true with the return of Winston Peters to Parliament in 2011?

Hide opens door for Winston?

Written By: - Date published: 12:01 pm, January 23rd, 2010 - 14 comments

Eddie has already covered the story of Hide giving the middle finger to the people of Franklin regarding the Supercity. Franklin is Tory heartland. However the current local National MP for Hunua, the underwhelming Dr Paul Hutchinson, has consistently been taken to pieces over his government’s decision to destroy the district. Locals are furious with […]

One of these things is not like the other IX

One of these things is not like the other, One of these things is not quite the same… Can you guess which one is not like the other, Can you tell me before I finish the game?

S59, an opening for Winston?

Written By: - Date published: 10:00 am, August 27th, 2009 - 18 comments

In 2007, 113 MPs voted for the Bradford amendment to s59 of the Crime Act. Eight voted against it. One of them was Winston Peters. Flash forward to 2009. The referendum has shown widespread dissatisfaction with the status quo – it’s dissatisfaction based on myths but the dissatisfaction is real. And neither of the major […]

Winston rising

Written By: - Date published: 11:45 am, July 23rd, 2009 - 32 comments

Like some bad horror movie, from beyond the political grave, it stirs again. Christine Rankin? Unbelievably – yes. Don Brash? Well yes, him too (fresh new thinking from National!). But these are but side shows to the main event. Winston Peters is back. Ironically it is National that has opened the door wide for Winston […]

Trivialising the electoral process

Written By: - Date published: 3:48 pm, October 3rd, 2008 - 29 comments

I don’t have a lot of time for Winston Peters’ politics or his dodgy electoral practices, but sometimes the man just hits the nail on the head: Rt Hon Winston Peters has accused a number of media outlets of trivialising general election coverage to the point of mindless banality. This follows a request from a […]

Roy Morgan has Winston on 5%

Written By: - Date published: 12:52 pm, September 19th, 2008 - 93 comments

If the latest Roy Morgan poll is to be believed, John Key’s big gamble of ruling Winston Peters out of any future coalition may well turn out to be one of the stupidest plays in New Zealand’s political history. According to the poll, NZ First has increased its hypothetical share of the vote to 5%, […]

Sideshow

Written By: - Date published: 1:07 pm, September 11th, 2008 - 36 comments

With an almost Winston-esqe turn of phrase Owen Glenn has labelled Labour Party president Mike Williams an “unmitigated falsifier of veracity”. Yet Glen himself has claimed that he was offered a cabinet post (cough), that he donated money to Labour because of the Exclusive Brethren’s involvement in National’s campaign (timing doesn’t work), that Labour Party President […]

Common sense from the Herald – stop the press!

Written By: - Date published: 2:05 pm, July 30th, 2008 - 59 comments

Brian Rudman’s piece in today’s Herald is so far the most sensible comment on the Spencer Trust affair. He points out that funding of elections in New Zealand has for far too long been vulnerable to the cheque-books of the rich. While some may be philanthropists like Glenn, or occasional players like Jones, others such […]

Peters refuses to answer your questions

Written By: - Date published: 12:59 pm, June 6th, 2008 - 37 comments

In the final of our ‘Interview the Leaders’ series, we asked Winston Peters three questions submitted by readers. Damian Edwards from his office promptly replied that Peters would be answering no questions from political blogs. So instead we’ve provided answers to your questions in the form of some great political songs. Q. Of which of […]

Interview the Leaders IX – Questions for Peters

Written By: - Date published: 8:44 pm, May 27th, 2008 - 2 comments

We’ve chosen the questions for Winston Peters in the final installment of our ‘Interview the Leaders’ series. The first question remains the same, as for all leaders: Of which of your achievements in politics are you most proud? For the others we’ve gone with Robinsod’s question: Last election you stated you would go with the […]

Get your questions in for Peters

We’ll be selecting the questions for Winston as the final interview in the ‘Interview the Leaders’ series on Sunday. So, get them in while you can here. It’s been enjoyable having this series and great to give readers the chance to question leaders in a public forum. If you’ve got any ideas for future series […]

If I were New Zealand First’s campaign strategist

Written By: - Date published: 12:39 pm, May 7th, 2008 - 42 comments

In some ways, there’s little to tell New Zealand First, other than let Winston Peters be himself. Peters has been (along with Helen Clark), New Zealand’s most successful MMP politician he has survived and run good campaigns every time except in 2005. He needs to remember to play the charming rogue a little more often, […]
