America faces a hell of a lot of problems at the moment, but if there’s one man with the ability to inspire and lead them through, it’s Obama.

“when I see the young men on the corners [of the ghettos] I say there but for the grace of God go I. They are no less gifted than me, they are no less talented than me but I had some breaks… I want all the other Barack Obamas out there… to have the same chance. The chance my mother gave me, that my education gave me, that the United States of America gave me”

And you know he means every word. In fact, he writes his speechs himself.

“Writes his speeches” is what I am sure you meant.

He at least flicks off a few phrases to a speech writer to incorporate into a speech I’m sure, you know, to personalise the message.

No he writes them personally. First President in ages to do so.

He didn’t write his inauguration speech, that was written by a 27 year old in starbucks, remember that story? Overall though, I think he has a lot of input into them, and certainly wrote them completely toward the beginning of his campaign.

      • This is really interesting, if it can be confirmed for certain (this generally takes a decade or so, until the Presidential Library is opened). The last President to write his own speeches was Reagan.

Certainly his stump speech and inauguration were written by some wunderkind, but I’m willing to believe Obama writes a fair proportion of his stuff, and presumably only then sends it of to his comms team for censoring.

  3. Is this the speech where he talks about kids gettin whupped by the neighbours or by mom and pop when they get home – if they are found wagging school? If they’re not hiding out playing playstation…

What on earth are you on about? He doesn’t personally write all his speeches, hell his main speech writer is all of 21 or so. He’s a bit of a tool anyway.

How refreshing it is to see such a charismatic leader. He will no doubt face very difficult challenges (like getting his healthcare plan through) but he will no doubt be one of the great leaders of our generation.

And when he finishes his speeches and is put on the spot by a question it is um um, long pause, um, um long pause, rhetoric….
While people are looking back at the moon landing 40 years ago Obama is cutting NASA’s funding and increasing military spending. Yes, more military spending than Bush. Truly ambitious for America.

Obama has cut a whole lot of military spending – F-22 is gone.

Those pauses are him thinking before speaking. I welcome it.

Military spending increased by 4%. Shows what Obama’s priorities are.
You could just as easily say his frequent pauses and ums are due to his slow thinking. He is lost without a teleprompter.
Should I stop questioning your messiah?

I had to redo this my comment disappeared into the ether.

On the topic of speeches, what did everyone make of Gordon Brown’s speech at TED?

The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
