I have been out fishing around the top of the Manawatu getting into Hawkes Bay, there is a lot of gullying and erosion in the area BUT quite interestingly there a goodly number of farmers planting natives and fencing stock out. Its really good to see, even if it is seen as a resource to crop in the future by some.
Going to see if the fish are interested this weekend. Plus its overdue to get the runner beans in.

Caught me two beauty sea-run browns in five casts at, believe it or not, a wilderness western catchment a week ago. 3lb and 6lb. Though not sure how enjoying fishing introduced fish which are voracious pests and wreck havoc on native fishes sits with my points on native bio as other posts …. aint resolved it yet. Maybe it’s just a dynamic environment. Any pointers welcome. I guess if all trout, salmon and others were removed then the local fish would return. At this catchment previously I seen the rare lamprey eels so maybe more of them would return.
In the end I guess railing against foreign grasses in lieu of native bush sits inconsistently with fishing foreign fishes.
Love it….actually I think we are closing the gate after the horse has bolted. The trout are there to stay, it might be a case of protecting a few streams which are easily cleared of trout or are trout free for the benefit of the natives. Or we can try and catch a lot of them!
Good sized fish, sea run the best to eat as well. I have been getting a lot of rainbows in Wairarapa waters that used to be brown trout capitals, maybe climate change or what ever……bit stumped on why.

On the note of Guerrilla gardening its a really good time to throw a few pumpkin seeds in around old water courses, shady spots near to barren sunny land. The trick is somewhere they can sprawl into the sun but still have damp roots without you watering. You come back in 4-6 months and crop (or some lucky sod does).
