A dude told me a good political rule of thumb the other day. ‘If Farrar won’t go near something, it’s pure political poison. Farrar can be low but he’s got good instincts for saving his brand. Look at the way he dropped Lee and his Mt Albert blogmobile’.

So I had to laugh when I turned on Close Up tonight and saw Cameron Slater/Whaleoil.

Think. First Sainsbury wanted someone to defend Key and Worth. Would have gone to mainstream rightwing commentators like Hooton first. Next it would have been Farrar. According to Sainsbury, Slater was the only one who would do it.

Everyone else had enough nous not to be seen standing up for a minister accused of a serious sexual offence and a PM who knew about the allegations, and believed them, but kept Worth on for a week. Everyone but Slater.

Pretty funny watching the interview. Slater’s so out of touch he doesn’t even know when Key learned of the complaint against Worth. Even though Key had told us five hours earlier in Question Time.

You’re in deep trouble when the only person willing to associate themselves with you is a short, fat misogynist, and it’s not Farrar.

“You’re in deep trouble” when regular doorknocking, letter stuffing, leaflet dropping centre-left party supporters like this one get a chance to post so frequently, and so prominently, on an issue like this. (The absence of Tim Ellis etc etc etc on these threads nowadays is well and truly noted!)

    • Tim Ellis 1.1

cta, I made a couple of comments yesterday. I’m amused that my absence has been noticed. I’ve been busy recently. There isn’t a conspiracy.

  2. Ag 2

Ah… watching that, now I know who Slater is. I wondered what he’d been up to. I hadn’t seen him since he had Princess Leia chained to his throne.

  3. You’re in deep trouble when the only person willing to associate themselves with you is a short, fat misogynist, and it’s not Farrar.

I think Slater is actually quite tall.

  4. No, he is a short arse. Interesting that Goff pulled out at the last moment.

  5. IrishBill 5

Not interesting at all BB, fronting up would only have meant Goff lost credibility and Slater gained it. It would be like Key agreeing to debate Robinsod (something I think we’d all like to see), what possible gain would there be for Goff?

  6. Interesting that Goff pulled out at the last moment.

Not really – he’s leader of the opposition. He goes up against the PM and possibly senior cabinet ministers depending on the circumstances. There’s simply no way he was going to debate a blogger. Makes you wonder who the hell Close Up having producing their show these days.

    • doc whose asking 6.1

some folks get a wire, some folks get close-up..huh.. was this in-studio..?

      • doc whose asking 6.1.1

addendum: and some folks get the 3 ricks – like on plunket’s plonker this a.m.

  7. Slick Rick 7

Oh my God, I just watched the Closeup piece. Slater was wearing that t-shirt he made of himself with the big muscley whale on it. The man’s a laughing stock, and by association, so is Closeup now too.

    • Pascal's bookie 7.1

      It’s not a whale, it’s a dolphin.

(everything else is spot on though!)

      • Kevin Welsh 7.1.1

I thought it was a killer whale?

Anyway, what is it with that haircut? I though men with perms went out of fashion after the Grahame Thorne attempt at fashion.

        • Pascal's bookie 7.1.1.1

I thought it was a killer whale?

’tis. But killer ‘whales’ have dorsal fins, which make them dolphins. It’s picky but true 🙂

    • Chris G 7.2

hahahah Slick Rick that was a great post. It inspired a rare ‘laugh out loud’ moment.

  8. MikeE 8

You’re an imbicile if you think Slater was defending Worth.

  9. Tim Ellis 9

If you thought Mr Slater was defending Dr Worth, then you clearly didn’t watch the programme.

I think it’s instructive that the same people who criticised Melissa Lee for not showing up for a TV3 interview when TV3 ambushed her over the NZOA allegations made by Mr Mallard, which later proved to be demonstrably untrue, are silent on Mr Goff not showing up for the Close-Up programme for a debate with Mr Slater.

    • LawGeek 9.1

Tim. Cameron slater photoshopped HC’s head onto tranny pr0n . He did something similarly disgusting with a (then) 15 year old labour activist. Whaleoil published John Minto’s address details and encouraged people to let Minto know what they thought of him. Porn photoshopping, beating up on minors in public, and intimidation.

Regardless of your politics the man is vile, vile, vile. Why on Earth would any politician want to be in the same studio as him? Seriously, you think this is something Goff should be ashamed of?

      • Spectator 9.1.1

“He did something similarly disgusting with a (then) 15 year old”

Hang on… what? Do I read this statement right: that Slater created a sexualised (maybe even pornographic) image of a minor?

There are words for that sort of thing, and they normally get mentioned in the court news. If this is true, then why the hell has nobody who’s familiar with this case reported it to the Police?

        • LawGeek 9.1.1.1

IIRC, he photoshopped this kid’s head onto softcore gay porn to say he was a fag, or something charmingly mature like that.

  10. Trevor Albert 10

Interesting that Goff pulled out at the last moment.

I surmise Sainsbury is thinking it’s a shame Slater’s dad didn’t do the same.
I love that Cameron was pleased with his debut and is eagerly anticipating his next big appearance… dude needs to get himself a modicum of self-awareness.

  11. Lew 11

Before seeing it, I figured the same. But I just watched this interview, and I tend to agree with Cactus Kate – underestimate at your peril. If you didn’t know he’s an unprincipled hack, it played as a decent interview by someone with evident inside knowledge who was able to speak from a perspective unconstrained by the party line. Slater’s vileness is well-known in these parts and to an extent within the beltway, but the TV audience won’t judge him on the basis of it – they’ll judge him on the basis of this interview.

Incidentally, Matthew Hooton paid an homage to Slater’s interview this morning on Nine to Noon (audio) with the construction “Taito Phillip Field, David Benson Pope, Winston Raymond Peters”.

  12. roger nome 12

Slater looks pretty flabby and soft for someone who poses as a tough guy. You’re a jem whale. “You ain’t no square with your cork-screw hair”! heh.

  13. vto 13

life’s too short to dance with fat chicks

(figured I may as well get in on the abuse too)

    • Maynard J 13.1

Indeed. People should piss off with the personal comments. Talk about trying to emulate what you hate.

  14. roger nome 14

I see where you guys are coming from – though i must admit to having a penchant for having a go at “bully” types.

In my opinion, when you make abuse and harassment your currency – you invite people to take you down in kind.

  15. DeeDub 15

Much as I hate to EVER agree with the wingnuts….

Yeah, let’s leave out the personal attacks, please?

Slater has a disgusting world view IMO but that’s no reason to discuss his appearance. It makes us no better than Paul Henry and umm… Cameron Slater and the like.

    • felix 15.1

Well I am better than Slater in every conceivable way and I still think he looks ridiculous. How can someone so hideous be so vain? Do they not let him have access to mirrors or something?

  16. Slick Rick 16

I never realised Slater had such a squeaky wee voice. And that hair! And those manboobs!

Reminds me of that old quote about Slater, he looks like a second tier bad guy in a batman movie.

  17. poptart 17

Love that “I surmise” bit. Slater tries to sound in the know, Sainsbury says he must have good inside knowledge of his claim, Slater shrugs in embarrassment. Don’t wait up for your next TV appearance Cam, I’m thinking it’ll be a long time.

Imagine, you think you’re getting a National Party insider on to talk on the record on your show, lead story, full of inside knowledge. Then a fat guy with funny hair shows up wearing a t-shirt of himself. You’re sitting there in the studio, it’s too late, and the cameras start rolling. And he turns out to be a mumbling moron with a squeaky voice who sounds like a vox pop off the street. For your lead story. Credibility: FAIL.

  18. the sprout 18

Apparently Cameron is the little brother of Andre the Giant.
Sad part is Andre got the looks AND the brains.

  19. Ruth 19

Slater has a disgusting world view IMO but that’s no reason to discuss his appearance

Huh? He’s always calling other people fat. ‘Pork chop’ and all that.

  20. Cactus Kate 20

    Ruth

The wonderful thing about Cameron is and always has been is that he doesn’t actually care what you call him! The more names you do the louder and more obnoxious are his come backs.

Basic good manners contends you can call people fat if they are fatter than you are.

And having seen both in the flesh I can confirm that Pork Chop is actually larger than Cameron. Cameron is also physically active at a gymnasium, whereas to Pork Chop gym is a guy she met while scoffing a workman’s breakfast at Soul.

    .

    • Maynard J 20.1

“The wonderful thing about Cameron is and always has been is that he doesn’t actually care what you call him! ”

Besides, his mental outlook is such an abberation I don’t know why people need to resort to commenting on his physical aspect.

Your earlier comment (and Lew’s) was right – most people who saw that would have seen a fairly reticent person who knew a fair bit as an ‘insider’ and not much more…or less.

    • felix 20.2

The more names you do the louder and more obnoxious are his come backs.

Sadly though his “come backs” are pointless and retarded and invariably lead to him coming off worse than if he’d kept his stupid mouth shut.

      As I’m sure you’ve noticed.

  21. mike 21

“you is a short, fat misogynist, and it’s not Farrar”

Crikey another post full of personal attacks. I’m off to WOBH for some political banter..

    • Zetetic 21.1

Do you need a hug mike? A tissue to wipe your tears away?

When did the Right turn into a bunch of sniveling PC whiners?

      • Ari 21.1.1

And when did the left use PC as an insult?

Seriously, if you need more adjectives for Cameron Slater, I’ll volunteer. Making fun of someone’s physique is for the playground. I like to think that sometimes in politics we can act like we’re relatively grown up.

Misogynist was on the money, though. You could’ve added homophobic ignorant partisan hack as a starting point. (And your joke about it not being Farrar might have still worked :P)

  22. Cactus Kate 22

The Standard has a touch of the green eye that Whale was asked on TV and they were not. And that he didn’t disgrace himself and actually came across as coherent and rational.

    Waaaaa.

  23. TC 23

Slater got on TV and we didn’t…bwaaaa waaaa blaaaa…it’s not fair…he’s fat and I’m not….bwaaaa waaaa waaaaa…
