    This is an interesting point. We have taken water for granted, now we have to consider sand as important too. Here are some links for those who want to know more about construction, sand and timber.

    The event, attended by Mayor Smith, where protesters formed the letters SOS on the beach, was one way to raise awareness, but there's also posters calling for the end of sand mining adorning Mangawhai shop windows.
    There's even been a screening of the documentary Sand Wars which looks at sand mining on a global level, including murders committed overseas by what's been dubbed the 'sand mafia'.
    He doesn't suggest New Zealand has its own sand mafia, but does believe sand mining in the Pakiri-Mangawhai area is unsustainable…

    For one thing, wood is lighter and more flexible than steel or concrete. A wooden skyscraper will have more give in an earthquake, for instance.     This is unbelievable. A local council that provides housing for people on low incomes contemplates raising rents to stay in line with its policy of charging 80% of market rent. Wow. Rents are out of control so the council want to hammer the poor. Inconsistency upon contradiction upon stupidity.
