The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...

Train services between Wellington and Auckland are to start again at the end of month. But they’ll only be running three times a week, in each direction. And the service will depend on level 1 being in force…
The Northern Explorer will re-commence its normal weekly timetable on Wednesday September 30, leaving Wellington on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and leaving Auckland on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
The Coastal Pacific will re-start on Tuesday October 13, running between Christchurch and Picton and returning the same day, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
“All the re-start dates are subject to New Zealand being in Covid Alert Level One. This is because the reduction in passenger numbers that is required to meet social distancing at Level 2, 3, and 4 makes the services no longer viable,” Mr Miller says.
Once the country returns to COVID-19 Alert Level One, the TranzAlpine will resume its current schedule, running return trips on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays between Christchurch and Greymouth.
Bit embarrassing, but thought they were still running
The Tranzalpine got going again at start of July but would have stopped once we went back to L2. The Coastal Pacific and Northerner were announced to be starting in "spring" at the same time
The passenger trains I think for both islands do stop for a while in winter of recent years under profit pressures from government. I think this is to announce that despite likely drops in numbers they will resume – but I don't know if we can get to Lockdown 1 with this tricky virus.
The young may accept risk, but wiser heads have to think it through, because they are increasingly unsure about risk as even those who recover may have some of their organs affected. This is not new, it just has not been as frequent; one of my relatives, middle aged quite well, got something I think it was the flu, and one of her kidneys died and she had to have it taken out.
Some #dirtypolitics progress.
