    Climate emergency!!

Oh, cool. Just pop it over there and we'll look at it when we get a moment…

Wasnt it strange when the civilians were escorted from the steelworks , in the buildup to the event or events it was speculated that the conditions that these civilians had been ' enduring ' must have been extremely difficult etc yet when they came out all had their belongings seemingly, they looked very clean the men looked freshly shaved and some even still had their dogs ! to me it looked for all the world that they'd just left a hotel or at least a reasonably well appointed backpackers .Just saying .

What should siege evacuees look like?

Should they look like they've been brutalised. Traumatised. Starved?

Should they have abandoned their animals. Eaten them, perhaps?

      Spit it out, tankie.

Didnt use the should word once in fact joe was just kinda strange they looked so calm well fed shaved etc when they had been bombarded for weeks suposedly short on food and medicine and effectivly imprisoned in a catacomb deep in the bowls of an abandoned steelworks but i take from your insulting tone you wer'nt surprised ?

        • Joe90 2.1.1.1

They ain't no catacombs, they're an underground township, a purpose built refuge for people during war.

More than twenty kilomeres of tunnels link 36 cold war era Azvostal steel works nuclear bomb shelters. The shelters are more than 30 metres below the surface. They were self contained with their own facilities, including ventilation systems, power generation, a subway, and stores, designed and constructed to withstand a direct nuclear bomb strike, ensuring the survival and sustaining the 12000 or more people required to maintain wartime metallurgical production.

Apparently Ukraine began restoring and restocking the shelters as best they could following the 2014 invasion of Crimea.

Thanks for replying joe , crickey dick that explains it then ! Why do you think there was all the agonising over the civilians 'plight ' then ? just propaganda from the ukrainian state /corporate media ?

      Surviving like a boss.

And still Mariupol is not fully under Russian control.

      Will it ever be?

Azovstal Steel Mill where dreams of empire died.

      • weston 2.2.1

" dreams of empire died " ?? what on earth are you talking about jenny ?

        • Jenny how to get there 2.2.1.1

Well weston, apart from the oft repeated allegation that the Azov battalion are nazis. (yawn)..

          Despite some premature announcements.

The colossal Russian war machine has laboured for almost two whole months to take full control of Mariupol and has still not succeeded.

Surely the battle for the Azovstal Steel Mill must be one of the greatest David and Goliath stand offs in the history of modern warfare.

          • weston 2.2.1.1.1

Your right jenny the allegation that there are nazi's in the ukraine is often asserted for the simple reason that there is a large element of truth to the claim though you might choose to be bored by the fact .Seems fairly obvious that any body would want to minimilize the extremely bad pr coming from soldiers with swastikers tattooed on their arms and that from my observation is exactly whats been happening .Im not gonna argue to what extent the far right nationalist exrteamists call the shots in the ukraine but from what ive seen so far the ideology seems riven in the national phyche .

Russia is undoubtedly in control of mariupol and from what ive heard the surviving civilians say they are glad of it the majority of them at least although probably not pleased about the destruction !

As jo90 explained earlier the azovs have a very snug bunker to hide in so far from a great 'david and goliath ' struggle they simply went downstairs shut the door and watched it on tv ….maybe ?

            • Populuxe1 2.2.1.1.1.1

Cute. And Russian revanchism isn't driven by nationalism at all…. I mean, Putin is literally justifying an invasion using exactly the same argument Hitler used to invade the Sudetenland. If you've quite done projecting your daddy issues on a genocidal petro-oligarch kleptocrat I'd quite like to try and keep my lunch down.

            • joe90 2.2.1.1.1.2

              ….maybe ?

How do you reckon you, your kids and your grandparents would fetch up after eight weeks in a cold, fetid 70 year old poorly maintained bunker thirty plus metres below the surface with dwindling fuel, food, medicines and water being terrorised by a 21st century war machine?

              • weston

Your not making a lot of sense joe as i said initially i was surprised when the civilians came out looking quite respectable …what would i be like ??cold miserable stressed unshaven dirty delighted i still had my dog i imagine i would need a stiff drink and a pack of cigaretes and lots of people to talk to etc etc

Weston, you say you've "heard". Where did you hear it?

I really think you need to put in a link to justify your claim that the majority of the surviving civilians in Mariupol say they are glad that Russia is in control of their city.

I have been googling several key phrases and words, "Citizens of Mariupol Greet Russian liberators" was one. And I have not had a single hit.
No matter what phrases or combination of words I have entered into google, I have been unable to find any reference at all, of any citizens of Mariupol being glad to be liberated by Russia.

              Help me out here buddy!

              • weston

try looking up Patrick Lancaster hes on the ground there and been delivering aid and generaly helping people in the war zones for some time .He is a bit clunky but speaks english and passable russian talks to as many people on the street as he can find that will answer his questions tends to be a tiny bit dramatic at times but hey hes there and all sorts of things are flying around not just bullets !

                from 5 yrs ago

and from a couple of weeks

There are others including Grayham Phillips very proffesional guy doesnt think much of patrick !but hes in the war zone also

                • Jenny how to get there

Hi Weston, I watched both pieces of the war porn, in the links you supplied.
Neither of them showed any "surviving" civilians "glad' at Russian control of Mariupol.
In fact they didn't show any civilians at all.

So where is it again, that you heard that Ukraine civilians are glad at Russian control of Mariupol?

                  weston

                  • weston

I gave you two links which could have led you in the dirrection of being more informed because you appear to be completely ignorant of the fact that there has been a war going on in the east of ukraine for eight years resulting in the deaths of 14 thousand civilians the largest proportion of which were people from the donbass according to the UN. Are you really surprised that people who have been shelled indiscriminately for eight years are gonna opt for a change of governance ???

Do your own work jenny as all of us must .

                • joe90

Lancaster's a fucking ghoul who hitchhikes through a war zone exploiting cadavers and fake IEDs for clicks.

                  • weston

Perhaps thats true joe not familiar enough with him to know myself have seen him helping people over there tho and his aid seemed well received .

Paul Henry being chief critic again. The man's ego knows no bounds. He says in the Premium section of the Herald that Air NZ is failing us and needs a new CEO. Who has he been chatting to?
