The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...
The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
National demands a debate, presumably an open and honest one, or at least a pretty legal one without Dirty Politics.
Ok then, let’s debate Don.
And after Judith Collins has neither denied nor confirmed that she has briefed Don ‘The Godfather’ Brash, perhaps she can kickstart the debate with the feebate scheme that this Government supposedly has not mandate for.
Mind you, one person’s debate is another person’s rant.
Chant the Rant.

The headline on the link says, “Leaked document …” Oh my God! That surely means another late night caucus meeting. Or wasn’t Barbara Kuriger there when it was leaked. I’ll have to ask Simon about it when I see him.
Nah, don’t get sucked in by those headlines. Anyway, all is sorted in the National Party, as they have done their reviews, rejected the most important recommendations, and continue with BAU. You see, there are no leaks anymore, because they’re now a tight team united and brimming with political talent with a light sprinkling of personal ambition on the side. Why would any National MP endanger the winning old horse, with the winning old formula, winning old trainer/coach, and that amazing winning jockey who has will singlehandedly lift the Party above the 35% cut-off in the polls? That would be mindbogglingly stupid, wouldn’t it?
ooh, new commenting interface. What’s this preview button like?…
Supercite?
vs
Quote
Hmm, can’t figure out what super cite is beyond the normal quote.
SYSOP humour
it’s all blockquote to me.
😀
Haven’t tried it, but let us know what you think.
Preview works for images too.
not sure the value yet for text. It removes the spell check underlining (Firefox Mac).
We’ve lost a few smileys, probably just as well given how clunky they are. Don’t forget these ❗ https://thestandard.org.nz/faq/smile/
and ever so topical
“Instead of pursuing this obviously good idea, we opt instead to leave all of that wealth in the hands of the rich, so that Sun Valley attendees Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson can use it to race one another to become the biggest asshole ever to go to space.”
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jul/12/what-happens-at-sun-valley-the-secret-gathering-of-unelected-billionaire-kings
and the obviously good idea?
“There comes a moment in every good gangster movie when all of the villains come together in a remote hideaway to make nefarious plans. If the good guys are smart, this is the moment they swoop in and arrest everyone.”
Putin arrested one/a few of his oligarchs* didn’t he?
2. (from google)(especially in Russia) a very rich business leader with a great deal of political influence. Why just Russia, the USA is the same? USA dictionary?
Why did my comment put up at 10.22am go into moderation? No links, Russia, Putin, USA and gave dictionary quote from google. Totally inoffensive – in a free country that is.
And now this one has gone to moderation also!
One of the words you used is in the blacklist. I’ve asked in the backend why.
Thank you weka. I will be interested in what, and whether the blacklist is a generic one – drawn up by whom or what?
Perhaps the word is ‘why’.
Already explained here: https://thestandard.org.nz/open-mike-13-07-2021/#comment-1802349.
from time to time we put specific words into the filter that are causing or associated with problems on site. This catches comments that have to be released manually so we can preempt the problem. We don’t say in the front end what those words are because they people find ways to work around them.
Thank you incognito about the way that mod works. But of course i wondered about more, what word was it.
And weka, that actually leads onto restricting discussion, a secretive way of controlling people when people aren’t advised that a certain topic or word is off-limits. Humans are so devious, even when they say they are not being devious,.
The Moderators know what they’re doing and have it in hand.
There is no “secretive way of controlling people”, as they receive plenty of warning before Moderators apply additional tools available to them to make sure the flow of commenting and genuine robust debate is not restricted by a few malcontents having shit fights, for example.
There is no “restricting discussion” because most comments are released in a timely manner and without any editing or alteration. A few comments may have minor or major edits by a Moderator in the usual bold font and in square brackets.
There is no editorial control.
There is no “devious” secret agenda.
The Standard is not a paid tool!!!
Simple rules are explained in the site’s Policy.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
