The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...
The server will be getting hardware changes this evening starting at 10pm NZDT.
The site will be off line for some hours.
Where does one start? National return to their lock term policy and has never known its consequences, not in the past and not now.

Does it lower child poverty, or make it worse? Does it increase cost to government – when people lose their rental and becoming homeless? Do children miss school time (and access to meals) when their parents move about?
Will managing all these consequences become a burden on bureaucracy and taxpayer?
Robodebt here we come!!!
The only beneficiary not spending more than half their benefit on such would be one at home with their parents.
For most 100% barely covers rent, power, media (phone/broadband) and food, if that (food banks, help from family).
The Cashless Welfare Card for purchases of food and essentials, was a total disaster in Australia.
The Money Management Card or White Card is more of the usual racist bullshit we have seen from this government of the greedy and for the greedy.
Such targets are reached by upskilling the local workforce and creating jobs, not punishing those on benefits while we are in a recession.
There should be internships/job training, rather than job application quota visit W and I office week after week. Most people will work for their benefit + costs if they are being trained up. It's actually cheaper than bringing in migrants – as they place pressure on infrastructure.
Even the old PEP work schemes reduced crime and improved community/environment/conservation.
A more modern option would be to offer those doing a small business start up course opportunity to focus on that direction (via part-time work in areas to develop their own capabilities etc and study online, marketing etc.
And providing realistic. effective mental health and addiction programme support.
On TV Three Now. (can watch later ThreePlus1) .
This..is so important !
Had to turn it off when the old fool said the scientists are entitled to their opinion I've got mine!!!!
"We dont believe in climate change" …"we'll be gone"
Old selfish fools indeed……
Already checked the height of my home above sea level, assuming a 20 m rise in my lifetime. The city I live in will be in a swamp delta.
At last, Labour finds a bit of spine!
https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/08/12/labour-vows-to-get-rid-of-charter-schools-if-it-regains-power/
“Labour has got rid of these before, and we will get rid of them again, because they are bad for young people and bad for their learning,” she (Jan Tinetti) said.
$140 million of tax payers money being wasted
obviously Seymour doesn't mind wasting money
Of course they are.

@publicaddress
Seriously, MSD has just been forced to cut more than 700 staff and now there are complex new monitoring systems to be introduced. How much "supporting into work" is really going to be done? I would venture that the answer is: fuck-all.

CLuxon said that he would bring in managers for those under 25, and they had to meet the terms of these outside managers, or lose eligibility for benefits.
This might be the way they enact that.
The remnant of the old Employment Service in W and I was the work broker (focused on the persons industry fit and employment options – they had local employer connections).
Ideally the outside connection would be with retired skilled workers but National seem to prefer management regimes for the unemployed … to ensure a “pacified” worker for employers.
But Hipkins and Tinetti have spent a fair bit of time saying that they agree with many other of the governments education 'policies'.
I guess adults can support good policy and oppose bad policy , rather than just oppose everything them over there do.
I'm pro the ph ban , pro a crack down on truancy, taking lunchs away or feeding $3 rubbish is just miserable
Quite so, Wag. As I've remarked before, no one person or organisation has a monopoly on good ideas, and certainly not on bad ones.
Confidence in the direction of health is not shared within the sector.

The art of the lie, giving even politicians a bad name.
Donald John Trump claims that the Harris-Walz crowd images are AI fakes (despite journalists covering the events).
For months now there have been AI fake images of Trump with people he has never met placed onto black social media sites by his campaign team.

You can tell by the hands if AI images are fake.
