With all the focus on Covid, these surveys are a good reminder that 1) the 2023 election probably won't be about Covid, and 2) there are huge problems for the opposition when it isn't.

Health? Major reforms kick in next year (no DHBs etc). National currently opposed.

Housing? Gov't not done enough, but National oppose even what they have done (tenants' rights, offshore buyer ban etc). If they pledge to reverse even those reforms – they're toast.

      Poverty/Inequality? Climate Change? Ditto.

They'll do tax cuts and crime as per usual, but that won't be enough. The new leader will have to do a Key (2008) and sign National up to things they oppose. But without Key's popularity to sweeten the dead rat.

“They’ll do tax cuts and crime as per usual, but that won’t be enough.”

Tax cuts are NOT going to resonate with the voters who back Labour or NZF or Greens. They never deliver enuf in the back pocket of low or middle income earners to make real or perceived cuts in Govt services cost-neutral & often seem to be accompanied by increases in indirect taxes. Tax cuts may be welcomed by the Top End of Town, but not enuf folk live at the Top End.

Where National might gain some traction is on Crime. Violent crime is up, & in Welly (& probably other regions)bit is now strongly associated with Labour’s “soft” policies on inner city emergency accommodation for social malcontents & gang members/ partners/ associates.

Gun crime is way up; it seems to be happening every 2nd day these says. While Labour can claim the Police under their administration is busting gang-drug ops, selling ill-gotten assets, & confiscating firearms, it looks tip of the iceberg stuff. People are sick of being intimidated by gangs p, & gangs have probably pissed a lot of folk off with their antics around nga tangi AND with their association with Covid getting a foothold among their members, associates, & whanau.

National’s tuff talk on gangs might be attractive to a good number of swing voters. Labour shows no sign of going there for fear of alienating Māori voters.

Labour is "not going there" for the simple reason "tough on crime" doesn't work.

As usual, if it doesn't work, like ACT's idiotic and unjust, Three strikes law, National and ACT want more of it.

Gangs are around because of poverty and alienation. Can't see National or ACT solving that.

Even though they are moving much too slowly, at least Labour/Greens are trying to work on the root causes of social problems.

Unfortunately unthinking knee jerk actions on crime, appeal to the shallow thinkers who seem to be much of the swing voters.

Cool – everyone on YT is automatically a self-serving shill, but Twitter is a serious reference now.

There is no doubt that we are being manipulated and misinformed – and among the faithful and gullible this is working. How many children, youthful athletes and even babies will have to succumb to the bad effects of both the virus and the "vaccine" (which does not work as a vaccine – merely a waning reduction of infectivity) before people wake up and realise the situation we have been led into?

    https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/vaers-cdc-covid-vaccine-data-injuries-5-year-olds/?utm_source=salsa&eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=5ced9ebc-29d3-4d7a-bd47-f05c8ebe353a

VAERS COVID Vaccine Data Show Surge in Reports of Serious Injuries, as 5-Year-Olds Start Getting Shots
VAERS data released today by the CDC included a total of 875,653 reports of adverse events from all age groups following COVID vaccines, including 18,461 deaths and 135,400 serious injuries between Dec. 14, 2020, and Nov. 5, 2021.

During a meeting on Oct. 26, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s vaccine panel, Dr. Jessica Rose, a viral immunologist and biologist, said tens of thousands of reports have been submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System for children ages 0 to 18, and that 60 children have died — 23 of them were under 2 years old.

“It is disturbing to note that “product administered to patients of inappropriate age was filed 5,510 times in this age group,” Rose said. “Two children were inappropriately injected, presumably by a trained medical professional, and subsequently died.

You do know that VAER, and other reporting systems, report adverse effects that have happened after vaccination?

Most are not, caused by vaccinations!

  3. Barfly 6

    "Childrens Health Defense" yeah right…sure

you claim 18641 deaths ……..hmm yeah nah

New Zealand 7,276,046 vaccinations for 1 death

USA 556,077,145 vaccinations for you claim 18461 deaths

Which pro rata the USA is having around 243 times more deaths per vaccination

I don't believe you I think you are a gullible lying idiot.

How nice of You! I made no claims at all.

I merely linked to a reporting site which may or may not contain misinformation …. any content there is not mine.

The whole international disaster has considerable possibility of grave downsides unless we are very very fortunate.

Without doubt many more adverse reactions from either vaccine and/or virus are in our collective future.

There is no doubt that we are being manipulated and misinformed.

I made no claims at all.

Seems that you not only made a claim, but whined when called on it.

@Maurice …..Just asking questions,I have one for you, what should we do instead ???

    • Patricia Bremner 6.2

What would I do? Auckland is still the centre of infection so keep Auckland quarantined until the infection there drops to ZERO

On the right of this very page:

    http://norightturn.blogspot.com/2021/11/how-does-labour-expect-to-get-away-with.html

Yesterday's decision by the government to open the Auckland border in December was, like all their other recent decisions, immediately panned by public health experts. The polite version, on Stuff, is that Covid will "travel for summer" with Aucklanders, leading to outbreaks. Newsroom's Marc Daalder cuts through the crap and tells us what that really means: people will die at home in an entirely avoidable pandemic, which will hit the most vulnerable hardest:

Is it just mindless optimism, a refusal to recognise the huge risks in their decision (which clashes violently with all their previous rhetoric about "an abundance of caution")? Are they really expecting voters to forget dead relatives and a mountain of corpses come election time?
