That image is a classic. It will go down in history as depicting the lunacy of the Trump circus:

And I haven’t stopped laughing since I saw this on TV3 news tonight:

Wow! Thanks swordfish. We can look forward to your ‘on the spot’ updates in September.

      ,

Jeremy Corbyn’s popularity among grassroots Labour members has grown in spite of a barrage of criticism from MPs over his leadership.

The party leader would beat Angela Eagle and Owen Smith, his rivals, by a margin of more than 20 points, according to a YouGov poll of Labour members. The proportion who think that Mr Corbyn is doing well is now 55 per cent, up four points in a fortnight; 41 per cent think that he is doing badly, down seven points.

His net positive score has gone up from three points to 14 despite 172 MPs indicating that they…

      http://www.thetimes.co.uk/_TP_/edition/news/corbyn-defies-his-critics-with-boost-in-grassroots-support-svmvc338s

If all three candidates stood, Corbyn, according to the YouGov poll, will win 54% of the votes while Eagle will secure 21% and Smith will be last with 15%. In a poll of 1,019 Labour members surveyed between Friday 15 July and Monday 18 July, 44% said they would definitely vote for Corbyn in the September leadership contest -an 8% increase compared to a fortnight ago.

Another 13% said that they would probably vote for him. Only 40% said that they would not vote for him, the YouGov poll revealed. If there was a head-to-head contest, Corbyn is expected to garner 58% of the votes against her 34%. If Corbyn faced off Smith, he would secure 56% against Smith’s 34% …

… Meanwhile, Corbyn suffered a humiliating defeat in Parliament on Monday 18 July night after MPs voted 472-117 to renew Trident. Several Labour MPs not only voted against him but also heckled him for departing from the party line.

Anger at Mr Corbyn’s leadership was evident in the Commons as MPs voted to renew the Trident nuclear deterrent system, with Labour splitting three ways. The majority backed the Government’s motion, but others – including Mr Corbyn – opposed it and some abstained.

YouGov polled 1,019 Labour members between Friday and Monday. All those polled had joined Labour before the start of 2016.

So, the poll covers Labour members who joined before January 2016, (and so will be eligible to vote in the contest), but obviously doesn’t include people who will sign up to be registered supporters during the brief window this week.

Some more detail from this YouGov Poll.

In the up-coming Labour leadership election, if these were the candidates, who would you give your first preference to ?

      ……………………….TOTAL…….Members pre-2015 GE…..Members joined after 2015 GE

      CORBYN …………..54% …………………… 39% …………………………… 68%
      EAGLE ……………..21% ……………………. 31% …………………………… 12%
      SMITH ……………..15% ……………………. 18% …………………………… 12%
      UNSURE ……………9% ……………………. 11% …………………………….. 8%
      NOT VOTE ………..1% …………………….. 2% ………………………………. 1%

Imagine there was a leadership election and these were the candidates, who would you vote for ?

      Corbyn Vs Smith
      CORBYN ………….. 56% …………………. 41% ……………………………. 71%
      SMITH ……………… 34% …………………. 47% ……………………………. 23%
      UNSURE …………… 7% ……………………. 9% ……………………………… 5%
      NOT VOTE ………… 3% ……………………. 3% ……………………………… 2%

      Corbyn Vs Eagle
      CORBYN …………… 58% ………………….. 43% ……………………………. 73%
      EAGLE ………………. 34% ………………….. 50% ……………………………. 20%
      UNSURE ……………. 5% …………………….. 6% ………………………………. 5%
      NOT VOTE ………… 2% ……………………… 2% ………………………………. 2%

Oh dear. If only the PLP supporters on Labour’s NEC had had the nous to disenfranchise all members who joined after Labour’s May 2015 Election defeat. If you’re determined to ruthlessly gerrymander the voting process then at least have the courage to go the whole hog.

  3. “Wage earners, and the millions who would be happy to earn a wage if they could find work, know better. Here in America, for example, most people outside the echo chambers of the affluent remember perfectly well that forty years ago, a family with one working class income could afford a house, a car, and the other amenities of life, while today, a family with one working class income is probably living on the street. Shouting down open discussion of interests by insisting that all political decisions have to do solely with values has been a common strategy on the part of the affluent; the outcome of the Brexit referendum is one of several signs that this strategy is near the end of its shelf life.”
