Anyone able to link to the full article please?

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/budget-2022-david-cunliffe-finally-a-government-has-guts-to-take-on-core-issues/E2CKYPVZQLTZMPZZOULKCAYEDU

Might remind me why I supported David back in the day.

    • Jilly Bee 3.1

I'm unable to Anne, I refuse to reinstate my Herald subscription which I cancelled last year. I also supported David back in the day and I would like to be able to read his opinion piece. While I had a quick look, I saw that Steven Joyce has added his probably toxic take about the Budget and how inflationary it is. Honestly, the Nats say in one breath that spending is out of control, then they change tack and say that the help offered is not near enough – I reckon they're between a rock and a hard place – I'm almost having a bit of a chuckle at times.

      • Belladonna 3.1.1

        I don't think it's paywalled. I can read it and I don't have a Herald subscription.

        • Anne 3.1.1.1

That's odd. Its a 'premium' piece and I can't link to it because I'm not a subscriber. Like Jilly Bee I refuse to subscribe.

I still enjoy the clarity of his vision. He was one in a generation.

      • Anne 3.2.1

That's what appealed to me too ms. Some of my local Labour colleagues could not abide him despite the "clarity of his vision". I never did fully understand why but in the interest of peace and tranquility decided to leave things be.

There might be more than an element of truth in this:

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/russia-ukraine-war-cancer-riddled-putin-surrounded-by-doctors-takes-breaks-for-treatment-claims-ex-british-spy/GVI5R2GLKSTOQ6TNQNHE74D6I4/

He looks very puffed up and ill. And it probably has affected him mentally as well.

Ah thats the same "ex british spy " gasp how exciting ! who penned the' Steel dossier 'in the Russiagate Hoax isnt it anne ? you know the bullshit story that the democratic party concocted to thwart Trump and saddle him with an unmanageable presidency for four years Four years of boring the whole world to death with non stop we gotcha stories from the united presstitutes of america ,the great non existant russia collusian conspiracy theory that hillary clinton presided over with her ancient and equally demented sidekick Nancy Pelosi in that good old fashioned rotten corrupt manner that the US political system has always fostered while masquerading as a democracy .

how on earth could you read a story from the herald by him and think that it contained ANY element of truth ??? sorry im ranting a bit but honestly ?

Eastern Donbass Ukraine defence is in a proper collapse now.

Didn't take long after fall of Mariupol.

Russia will last longer, and win more.

Ain't pretty and there's now a lot riding on it.

    • RedLogix 5.1

A slow grinding reduction of everything to rubble with heavy artillery to cover an advance into a wasteland. The tide of this war will flow back and forward – but ultimately Russia is isolated and this will end very badly for them.

On the bright side, three months in and they haven't managed to occupy Kyiv, topple Zelenskyy, install a puppet government, capture all of Donbas and Ukraine’s Black Sea coast, or destroy Ukrainian armed forces.

On the bright side the denazification side of Putins stated objectives are going splendidly with the mass surrenders of the Azov battalion in Mariupol it will be very good political capital for Putin and very bad political capital for Zelinsky although he has plenty of help to put some sort of face saving spin on it .The locals sound like they're very pleased to hve some peace and security after eight long years and finding the power back on i imagine would be very cheering !

Are all members of the regiment neo-Nazis?

Of course not. In the ranks of the National Guard, as well as in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there are no units created on ideological grounds.

The only possible ideology of the National Guard is the Disciplinary Statute. Which, by the way, enshrines the obligation to “respect human rights, honor and dignity” and “refrain from statements and actions that violate human rights or degrade human honor and dignity.”

Among the founders and fighters of Azov Battalion were individuals with far-right views and a neo-Nazi background. However, not all the battalion’s founders fit this description.

Among the first Azov soldiers, for example, was a group of Automaidan activists, including several ethnic Jews (and at least one Israeli citizen). By the end of 2014, most far-right fighters left the regiment. The rest of the right-wing radicals who openly articulated their views were deliberately “cleansed” by the new regiment command in 2017. Since then, there have been no grounds for accusations that neo-Nazis serve in the Azov Regiment.

But of course you knew this already. You do not give a shit about nazis – this is about pushing anti-Western talking points.

" will end very badly for them etc U think ? Russia's economy is in great shape atm at least ; the sanctions have been an almost total failure in fact impacting badly in the aggressor countries faces and despite the theft of its funds in foreign banks Russia has more money in surplus than a proverbial bull could shit with an virtually unlimited ability to generate more because they have lots of what the whole world wants and needs ie gas and oil grain and valuable foodstuffs fertilizer minerals rare earth commodities and more !! Russia may seem isolated but it would be a mistake to think she is alone .A great many countries have been very badly treated by the US over the years and the whole world is watching America's proxy war with Russia .

And we the west keep feeding weapons into a population who is losing. Or if they win, it will be the ultimate Pyrrhic victory.

      • RedLogix 5.2.1

Yes – we have read all of this before. We should avert our eyes and tell Ukraine to roll over and and Putin will be happy with that. Right?

Remember that this is the guy who three months ago was assuring the world he had no intention of invading.

If you have the time (about 16 minutes), a great video outlining why our car centric urban design is a problem.
