Something I was wondering about this today.

      15 years for lamb.

Does anyone know if this is locked in or whether a new UK govt can just say, "Now we don't agree. Changed our mind"?

      Sounds good for wine though.

All 8000 people in the city of Tall el-Hammam died in an instant after a bolide meteor explosion equal to an 8 megaton nuke. Ground temperatures neared 2000C and the shock wave spread their remains all over the shop. Certainly explains the Sodom and Gomorrah yarn. Pillars of salt and all that. Probably didn’t do much good for those Jericho walls, either

Long, and most of the tech stuff goes whoosh, but still a fascinating read.

    Abstract

We present evidence that in ~ 1650 BCE (~ 3600 years ago), a cosmic airburst destroyed Tall el-Hammam, a Middle-Bronze-Age city in the southern Jordan Valley northeast of the Dead Sea. The proposed airburst was larger than the 1908 explosion over Tunguska, Russia, where a ~ 50-m-wide bolide detonated with ~ 1000× more energy than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. A city-wide ~ 1.5-m-thick carbon-and-ash-rich destruction layer contains peak concentrations of shocked quartz (~ 5–10 GPa); melted pottery and mudbricks; diamond-like carbon; soot; Fe- and Si-rich spherules; CaCO3 spherules from melted plaster; and melted platinum, iridium, nickel, gold, silver, zircon, chromite, and quartz. Heating experiments indicate temperatures exceeded 2000 °C. Amid city-side devastation, the airburst demolished 12+ m of the 4-to-5-story palace complex and the massive 4-m-thick mudbrick rampart, while causing extreme disarticulation and skeletal fragmentation in nearby humans. An airburst-related influx of salt (~ 4 wt.%) produced hypersalinity, inhibited agriculture, and caused a ~ 300–600-year-long abandonment of ~ 120 regional settlements within a > 25-km radius. Tall el-Hammam may be the second oldest city/town destroyed by a cosmic airburst/impact, after Abu Hureyra, Syria, and possibly the earliest site with an oral tradition that was written down (Genesis). Tunguska-scale airbursts can devastate entire cities/regions and thus, pose a severe modern-day hazard.

Thanks Jo 90, a great read, thanks for the attachment.

Cool! It was God's will, obviously. I like your theory that he was trying to hit those other two cities but unfortunately they haven't been put on that map so we can note the proximity to see how feasible the theory is. yes

If cases double every 10 to 12 days …by mid November 200 Dec1 400. Are you SURE you want to open up Judith?

Collins can say what she likes, she is not going to be scrutinized as she is not the government. Collins will say anything to distract the public from her being the wrong leader for National.

Its going to happen regardless, the vaccine will slow spread a bit and will prevent the worst of the ill effects but its not going to keep the r value under 1 not even close. Realistically its looking more and more like a Vax is a personal health decision in terms of avoiding the worst of covid and helping the health system. Its not going to lead to herd immunity or anything remotely close.

We're in a far better position than most countries on dealing with what will be our real first wave but nonetheless the road ahead is bumpy… what we dont want to do is divide NZ society too deeply as we travel down that road as those wounds will remain long past Covid.

      • McFlock 4.2.1

Slowing spread a bit, "flattening the curve" (how very March 2020) and lowering the pressure on the health system is a public service.

      • Patricia Bremner 4.2.2

Absolutely Cricklewood. Our values of inclusion kindness and fairness, have been challenged lately. Mental health is not so strong currently as the enormity of what is coming sinks in for some. Compared to other places we are blessed.

Those who are not sure, need to heartrealise those guiding this have studied and worked in their field for 15 to 20 years. So please get vaccinated to give your family a chance.yes

Your case numbers are for the current Delta strain. The Delta strain has a new mutation, only a fool would rush into a brick wall without considering the consequence. When a fool is the leader of the opposition this worries me.

      yes

When a fool is the leader of the opposition this worries me. yes

Collins' reckless foolishness is contagious, but maybe she and her followers should be forgiven – those wounds are deep enough already.

So when we get 200 cases a day, that will be between 2-4 vaccinated people in hospital a day? But how many non-vaccinated people? Big incentive to get vaccinated.

You either back a party leaders Covid strategy or you do not. Covid is too serious to play with a person's health. Poor health and no livelihood.

The voters will have their say in about 2 years how the government managed Covid. A lot is going to happen between now and then. Now is what I am focusing on. That people do not struggle more than they need to.

Well is kind of a bummer. My big boss announced today they were looking at all staff fully vaxed mandatory.

Was kind of hoping I could avoid the second after the first one.

Oh well. It is what it is or will be. Choice has kind of left the building a while ago.

    • KJT 6.1

If they do make it mandatory.

Hopefully for staff and customer welfare reasons.

A few days paid time off should be available to those that have the sniffles etc afterwards.

I have had the first one. Seriously pisses me off.

Not everyone has great experiences or want to have another.

My second dose was fine, absolutely no side effects. Just get it Chris, as Covid is a whole lot worse.

      • chris T 7.1.1

To be perfectly honest, being fairly young and healthy, I doubt Covid would be worse than my first jab. But thanks.

    • Treetop 7.2

A plan is needed for your second jab.

Is there a free GP practise where you can go for vaccination, prior to going can you discuss your first Covid jab experience with a health professional?

I stayed an hour after my first jab, my anxiety went up and down, I left after I felt baseline calm. I was not feeling great when I arrived on the day with mast cell symptoms, (flushing, nausea and headache due to my elevated tryptase). A bit of anticipation with the second jab and I arrived with raynalds and a cold core. An iron infusion in between jabs. I came to the conclusion that my usual low iron probably contributed to me jumping out of my skin with the first jab.

With the second jab a pregnant woman (looked 6 months) arrived ahead of me and was gone after 15 minutes post the jab. I stayed 45 minutes after the second jab. It is about the individuals Covid vaccination experience and the support they need if required.

      • chris T 7.2.1

Yeah. TBH if I was slightly brighter I would have booked it for today given the 3 day weekend.

Will probably just go with a taking a firday arvo off and giving myself a weekend if it gets ugly again idea.

        • Treetop 7.2.1.1

My main motivation for getting the jabs was to reduce being hospitalised with Covid and so the grand – children would not kill me off so easily.
