  1. SPC 1

The bar owner who lent credibility to the Brown mayoral campaign, by being less suitable, claims only former serving police officers should be police ministers.

A question, can anyone name a former Police Minister who was a former police officer?

      Ross Meurant?

I reckon you'd have to go back to Clem Simich.

Minister of Police 98-99. And detective sergeant, NZ Police 1957-1966.

But enormously outweighed by Police Ministers with no policing or even vaguely law-related credentials.

And the only Police Minister I've written to (on two matters – one reply from him, one from his gatekeeper Graham Thomas – secondment from Police HQ – and one referred to police as an operational matter).

        • Belladonna 1.2.1.1

My great uncle (senior civil servant – though never worked in any of Simich's portfolios), said that Simich was the greatest gentleman in Parliament. Unfailingly courteous to everyone – right down to the door openers.
No idea whether that made him an effective Minister, or not – but he was a pleasure to work with.

Yes Clem Simich I gave up at Dover Samuels…..I knew he was from the North.

I don't think it is any great advantage to a Minister to have experience at the portfolio. I worked for two who had no experience and one especially was brilliant at a couple of portfolios he had no experience at.

One had the Police portfolio and Police usually played with a pretty 'straight bat'. Min of Police has no operational involvement with police. She will get a seconded person from Police hopefully. We had a couple and they were great.

Earlier on in NZ history, it seemed to be fairly common for there to be Police Ministers with army background. IDK whether that was because the army was seen as a related area; or it was simply because a much higher number of male MPs had some army experience at that time (post WW2).

So if someone needs experience before they are capable of filling a political position, how come Leo Molloy put himself forward to be Mayor of the southern hemisphere's biggest city?

Trump enabling people to be their worst selves.

Such as an appreciation for German words such as small drump, little drump, drump at the gaetz and schadenfreude.

Paraphrasing, but the problem with Trump is he made stupid people think they were smart.

      • Roy Cartland 2.1.1

I'd say it was more like he legitimised and celebrated their stupidity as a valid and worthy trait.

        • tWiggle 2.1.1.1

I read a speech of Trump's for the 2016 election, and it was really quite good. I could see the appeal of his Make America Great Again nostalgia for full employment and bustling industry. As Obama did little to rebuild US industry in the MidWest, where people grew poor within a couple of decades from the 80's, many were willing to believe in the promises Trump offered. So I don’t think people were stupid, they were suckered.

Of course, like Boris Johnson with 'oven-ready brexit', the speechifying was just an alluring storefront to an empty building, occupied by an attention-hungry narcissist. By throwing out chaff continually, both Trump and Johnson diverted attention from their inadequate administrations and extended their hold on power, without having to do much real work. Their circuses and lies distracted the citizens.

I understand there are problems with getting the census to people. I understand some people have problems with filling the form online and using technology to do the census. I appreciate some don't have access to online technology to do it.

I understand some won't fill the form to make some sort of political point. The team of 5 million is down to the team of 3,743,660.

From early in the day until tonight I've heard about the education system being stuffed as shown by our kids being dumb. Adults can't find a way to organise an effective census and do it as an important civic exercise? No wonder our kids are dumb.

I filled in mine, but did not sign it. I enclosed a letter saying that as the form did not give the the opportunity to tell the truth about Question 3 (the gender one) I could not sign it as being true.
