The current rise of populism challenges the way we think about people’s relationship to the economy. We seem to be entering an era of populism, in which leadership in a democracy is based on preferences of the population which do not seem entirely rational nor serving their longer interests. ...

The site will be off line for some hours.
The present is a foreign country….we now have 'Zee' energy and 'Maaro' bars

And the Granny does not change. An article today on international reaction to our Covid crisis and Jacinda Ardern's leadership leans ultra-heavily towards the negative.
Two opinions quoted were from the Telegraph. That used to sound like a respectable newspaper name to me until I lived in England for a while and read it. It is ultra-Tory. The Telegraph could barely bring itself to use moderate terms like Socialist or even Communist – it usually cut straight to the bone and said 'Marxist' (maximum emotive effect).
And another negative comment from the formerly independent BBC (whose independence to my mind seemed to diminish with Maggie Thatcher's meddlings)… I guess the BBC one is supposed to make the Herald look like it is being truly independent and quoting opinions from all sources. But they found a BBC one that was critical and used it along with the two Telegraph ones.
A disgustingly one-sided portrayal.
At the same time, the Righties revile her every time she speaks to the country as a leader has to do.
But I think she has the ability to convince most 'ordinary Kiwis', who will not be convinced by the army of whingers and spinners.
That is both what the polls show, and what I hear when I’m talking to people. I get a bit of the cindy shit – along with commentary about how utterly useless National is. But many people that don;t like Labour for tribal reasons are voting for anyone but National.
Most of the criticism that sounds heartfelt rather than tribal mutterings of the right is coming from the left supporters and essentially consists of ‘going too slow’. Not that there is much choice especially on the big generational issues like housing prices, congestion, climate change or generally fixing decades of neglect in the government staffing of crucial services like health and electricity.
Politics is standing still. Part of that is the covid-19. Most of it is that the opposition sound like a pack of whittering nut-jobs trying to hold on to a universe that has gone past its use-by-date. ie the kind of idiots who’d follow Trump.
Glad to agree.
Yes In Vino, it is a concerted effort to present Jacinda as a control freak seeking the impossible, at the same time presenting David Seymour/Judith Collins as reasoned.
I nearly fell off my chair laughing. A PM with 45.6% of the Leadership vote against 8.6 and 8.2 for the opposition.
The oft repeated refrains, may have some followers now, from NZ first and the more right wing "freedom" fools.
I defend free speech, but outright lies and repeated slanders need to be called for what they are…trolling and forms of dirty politics laced with personal attacks.
Well now have a look at Political Roundup just up on Herald's website. Supposed to be even-handed from that Bryce fellow. No even-handedness this time… All one way. Without any explanation of pro-Govt arguments at the end – only the paltry mention of a few names and links.
Utterly despicable.
much higher compliance with 2 metre rule than last level 4 and 90% wearing masks.

After the Forstater case. Very worried this is coming here.
