Don’t go, oh mighty Atlas. We’ll give you tax cuts

So, I’m at a cafe having lunch and there’s some fat middle-aged businessmen having lunch at the table beside me. One of them is talking about Blair’s appearance at the inquiry on the invasion of Iraq and says “all these namby-pambies say ‘oh we shouldn’t have invaded’ but they would have shut up if Saddam had set off a nuclear bomb in London” and rabbits on about how Saddam might have sold nuclear tech to terrorists.

I start smirking at the guy. Even his mates look a bit embarrassed by the guy’s idiocy.

See, this is why we need is tax cuts for the rich. So guys like this rich businessman won’t go overseas. Our little country would be lost if it weren’t for these mighty Atlases holding the rest of us aloft.

Because no skinny people on a low income are stupid, right?

    • Bright Red 1.1

Pretty sure that’s not what the post says.

      • fizzleplug 1.1.1

The post doesn’t actually make any decent point. I think it’s about how we have to keep the stupid rich here to make this guy feel superior at lunch, but that seems a pretty weak point to me.

Satire isn’t satire if it’s poorly written. It just comes across as smarmy (and how we all hate that!).

        • lukas 1.1.1.1

I don’t think it is satire, there is no satire or joke or comedy tag…. scary.

          • JakeD 1.1.1.1.1

Satire is fiction that pretends to be serious while poking fun at its subject matter.

This is a true discription of what happened and laughing at the idea that we should pay off these idiots because otherwise they’ll leave and without them our country would be lost.

            So, no, it isn’t satire.

            • Gosman 1.1.1.1.1.1

So you think that this particular person is an accurate refelection of the wealthy segment in society that is more likely to stay due to lower tax cuts do you?

Do you have any evidence beyond the anecdotal backing this up or can we all make gross generalisations about segments in society based on lunchtime observations?

              • lukas

only if they involve fat businessmen.

              • Ari

I’m pretty sure this post is not pretending to be anything more than an anecdote, Gosman.

Personally, I don’t think there’s such a thing as an “Atlas” figure in modern society at all. If that much responsibility ends up resting with one person, it’s usually in some sort of emergency.

              • Gosman

Coming to any firm conclusion relying on anecdotes is futile. So what you are stating is that the entire point of this thread is essentially a waste of space because it is predicated on the anecdotal recollections of the author and not on any hard evidence.

              • BLiP

You inability to extract learning from anecdotes says more about your own futility than it does about the post.

              • Gosman

Do you believe in Ghosts and Psychic/Mediums BLiP? If not I have a hundred anecdotal stories for you.

              • TightyRighty

BLiP, do you sit there all days and think of ways to be a condescending prick? if you can extract learning from anecdotes but can’t extract learning from social commentaries, then you’re practically extracting the urine out of yourself

            • TB 1.1.1.1.1.2

How did you know he was a businessman and wealthy? I’m not wealthy by a long shot and Im not a businessman however I wear a suit to work and have nice shiny shoes and sometimes even have lunch in a cafe.

  2. PT 2

never heard a leftie come up with a stupid conspiracy theory on 911 then jake. this is why we pay benefits to lazy lefties so they can come up with stupid ideas

    • Bright Red 2.1

Again. The post is mocking the idea that the rich are somehow better than the rest of us and we should be grateful to have their wisdom to carry us forward. It is not saying that no poor people are stupid or have stupid ideas.

      • Gosman 2.1.1

If someone is smart enough to generate wealth, (not just spend it), I don’t care how ignorant they are in other aspects of life.

It is only the ignorant ones who demand hand-outs that I have a real problem with.

        • Ari 2.1.1.1

Who’s really generating the wealth, though? I’m not really convinced that the right wages go to the right people, in that department. CEOs are certainly colluding with boards in the private sector to ensure they’re overpaid.

          • Gosman 2.1.1.1.1

Spoken like a true blue big statist lefty.

Of course you know much better than the market how much people should be getting paid.

You also know much better than the market what people should be paying for everything as well.

What we really need is a couple of thousand of people with your amazing ability to regulate everything and the World would be just perfect.

            • Pete 2.1.1.1.1.1

…but don’t make the market angry, or the market will collapse and we’ll all be doomed, doomed I say…

‘The market’ is a bunch of people making things happen (including collusion), to ignore this basic truth is to be blissful.

    • if its broken - fix it 2.2

please spend one hour of your life honestly looking at the numerous facts surrounding the issue, then try to repeat your above comments. may i suggest you start with
Architects and Engineers for 911 truth,
by the way, there is not a’ lazy lefty beneficiary’ among them, just qualified professionals

  3. lukas 3

so, I’m driving past KFC and this fat beneficiary was ordering. He went on to talk about how he deserved a better minimum wage.

I start to smirk at the guy, even his mates look embarrassed at the guys idiocy.

See, this is why we need to raise the minimum wage, so guys like this can keep our little country afloat.

    • JakeD 3.1

Beneficiaries aren’t earning the minimum wage. So bit of a fail there kiddo.

Plus, you just made that up

  4. JakeD 4

Don’t like it up, ya, do you righties?

If the rich are just as idiotic as the rest of us how can they be Altases supporting the rest of us ‘creating jobs’ and all that nonsense you go on about?

Fact is, they’re not heroes and we shouldn’t concede to the threats, like in your stupid story about the 10 guys paying the bill at the restuarant, that if we don’t give all the money to the rich guys they’ll leave and the rest of us will be fucked.

    • PT 4.1

because we pay tax that you lefties waste, dick

      • Ari 4.1.1

We’ll ignore the fact that tax-dodgers tend to vote for right-wing parties with more lenient tax regimes for a minute, and I’ll ask you a simple question:

Are you trying to pretend that “lefties” don’t also pay taxes? Because generally, we believe in them a lot more than “righties” do, which makes us more inclined to pay them, not less.

        • Gosman 4.1.1.1

No, I think he is implying that the people who pay the most tax in the economy also tend to support parties on the right of the political spectrum whereas those supporting the left leaning parties are more inclined to be receiving that tax money via Government handouts.

Do you disagree with this assessment, if so do you have evidence which supports your differing opinion?

      • mickysavage 4.1.2

Bet I pay more tax than you do.

  5. Pascal's bookie 5

…and a bunch of righties respond with a bunch of stupid.

    Gold.

  6. tsmithfield 6

JakeD “If the rich are just as idiotic as the rest of us”.

I have to agree with you including yourself in the ranks of the idiotic, Jake. After all, you said it.

  7. Scribe 7

    Jake,

I’m not sure that the views of this mythical businessman (why should we believe your story, but not the KFC one?) on Blair’s decisions as PM and/or the role of Saddam Hussein necessarily reflect on his ability to create jobs and generate wealth for the country.

I’d rather someone with strange views on global warming — sorry, climate change — or who blew up the World Trade Centre but excellent business judgement stay in NZ than leave and create jobs overseas.

  8. Bill 8

    Ah, fuck it all.

Give the fat cats the tax cuts… then lasso the bastards, roll them around the streets and flip them on their backs for the kids to play mighty atlas bouncy castle on.

    • The Baron 8.1

Wow, the HATE on this site is really getting worrying.

73% of personal taxes by 10% of income earners… and yet you all still appear to hate every single one of that 10%.

This is where I don’t get the NZ left… so un-aspirational; so jealous; so bitter? Such a nasty legacy of the Clark years, this.

      • Bill 8.1.1

What the fuck you on about Baron? I love kids. And kids love bouncy castles. And you’ve got a problem with bringing both of those things together?

Tell you what. Take your faux outrage and stick it in that smeared hole just beyond the toilet paper where your intelligence resides.

      • Bright Red 8.1.2

        44%.

And 50% of the country’s wealth held by them. Compared to negative wealth for the poorest 10%.

  9. tc 9

that’s a bit unfair, the fat bloke was probably in sales at telecom and as such is only expected to know the sales speel which as teresa has said is double speak/confusing/designed to fleece the customers, beyond that and where the next meeting/conference is they don’t get paid to be well read.

The amount someone gets paid doesn’t equate to their intelligence, just how connected / how well they play the politics/ how lucky they are…….just look at the tops of any large business or worse it’s fat middle layer.

  10. Onomatopoeia 10

How do you know he was a businessman? Was he conducting business at the table?Or did you make a superficial judgement based on his appearance?

  11. Santi 11

More prejudices from an one-eyed leftie.

  12. Onomatopoeia 12

Personally, I find it hard to recognise socialists unless they dress like this. Luckily, they all seem to.

[lprent: Perhaps you’re one of the dickheads that the post was referring to. Shallow and confident that your stupidity is in fact brilliance. I think all of us have met you before.. ]

  13. outofbed 13

    slow news day?

  14. IrishBill 14

Funny how upset the right get from an anecdote when anecdotes about crime, beneficiaries and “political correctness” are the foundations of most right-wingers’ political philosophy.

I must remember to tell a few myself.

    • Gosman 14.1

So are you stating it is okay to use anecdotal evidence as the basis for forming an opinion about something like Jake has done?

      • IrishBill 14.1.1

No I’m pointing out the irony of you lot on the right getting so upset about it when the tactic of taking an anecdote and generalising it to create policy is stock and trade amongst your political kith and kin.

        • Gosman 14.1.1.1

I’m still confused. Is your position that it is okay to do this or it isn’t okay to do this?

          • IrishBill 14.1.1.1.1

I don’t need a position on it. It’s not my post. Very amusing watching you lot bitch and froth though. Bravo Jake.

            • Gosman 14.1.1.1.1.1

I’m personally finding it amusing that such a pointless anecdotal story is attempted to be used by some as evidence of some sort of example of the inherent flaws in Capitalism.

I mean just look at BrightRed’s post below – ‘The anecdote merely exemplifies the fallacy of the Randian Atlas myth’.

It would be funny if BrightRed was taking the micky by being a bit over the top but I have a sneaking suspicion he/she actually believes every word written.

      • Bright Red 14.1.2

The anecdote merely exemplifies the fallacy of the Randian Atlas myth, the narrative of capitalist as hero and creator of wealth and jobs, that your righties cling to and use to justify your desire to maintain your position of privilege in our social/economic system.

Sorry, should I have used shorter words?

        • Onomatopoeia 14.1.2.1

Sorry, should I have used shorter words?

Are you trying to propogate the image of the left winger as a smug, self-satisfied fuck who enjoys talking down to everyone who he disagrees with?

          • Bright Red 14.1.2.1.1

            Not everyone, just the morons.

            • Onomatopoeia 14.1.2.1.1.1

So, you are a “a smug, self-satisfied fuck who enjoys talking down to” morons? Good for you. You seem very nice.

              • Bright Red

Yeah, I realised what I was writing, Ono.

That was the humour of it.

But thanks for spelling it out for the other righties. I can see their brows un-furrowing from here.

  15. tsmithfield 15

Jake probably wouldn’t know a “rich prick” if he fell over one. A friend of mine is a multi-millionaire. He lives in a 60 year old very plain house on a busy main road and still drives around in the Datsun 120Y he brought new in 1974. According to him, the car still gets him from A to B and he has hardly had to spend any money on it since getting it, so why should he change. He wears his clothes until they are nearly falling to bits.

If you didn’t know better you would think he was a down and out bum.

    • Gosman 15.1

But he’s pig ignorant isn’t he tsmithfield?

He’s got to be as he is a wealthy businessman.

      • The Baron 15.1.1

Probably “hides” all his wealth in trusts and companies too – WANKER!

I bet that120Y is part of an elaborate pyramid scheme that defrauds honest, ordinary, hard working, working workers who LOVE paying taxes cos it gives them “world class” health and education.

Can we have an address? I’ve just texted DtB, BLiP and Snoozer and they have the pitchforks ready. We’ll have this rich prick on a plane by dinnertime.

        • BLiP 15.1.1.1

Fuck the plane – sling him on the barbie.

        • tsmithfield 15.1.1.2

Actually, making money is sort of like a hobby for him. He’s really good at making it, but hardly ever spends it.

When he was young he worked hard-out at the freezing works while doing a degree in computer science. He built up enough of a deposit for his first commercial building. He has been gearing up and purchasing more warehouses. Now he owns ten of them. The tenants have paid off the mortgages so they’re all freehold. So he has about 500k in rent just rolling in every year.

Plus he makes truckloads speculating in “options” on the Auzzie stockmarket.

          • Wender 15.1.1.2.1

Doesn’t sound like the guy of person who is constantly clamouring for tax cuts. Doesn’t really need the money and willing to make it himself rather than by putting taxes up on the poor.

Let’s hope he has goodness of spirit to put his money to good use for his community.

            • Jagilby 15.1.1.2.1.1

“Let’s hope he has goodness of spirit to put his money to good use for his community.”

I’ll take that as double speak for – “he’ll give his money to those who know how to spend it better than him”. “Those” being the great omnipresent state that we all long for.

So, the logic is that if this guy isn’t ostentatious with his wealth then he must be truly altruistic and not wish to structure his affairs in any way shape or form?

Either that or he is truly cheap and hoards every dollar he’s ever made and structures his affairs likewise.

“Sorry, should I have used shorter words?”

              • Jagilby

Altruistic in only a way a left leaning individual would know how to be… I mean if he were part of the VRWC then it would be so obvious that he had cash – that suit, that cigar, that monocle, that glass of brandy.

              • Wender

no jagibly, I’m not suggesting he gives the moeny to the government. There are plenty of ways he could make the lives of his fellow humans better with money he doesn’t need.

And shouldn’t we all want to make life better?

Isn’t that why rightwing people claim they are against the minimum wage? Because they say it destroys jobs and the lives of people will be better without it?

Isn’t that why you want tax-cuts? So everyone will be better off from more economic growth?

That sense of alturism and community is the reason behind those positions isn’t it?

          • The Baron 15.1.1.2.2

His hobby is making money rather than paying additional taxes, supporting charities or agonising over Palestine?!?!?!

He sounds like a right wee fascist. He can\’t have got that far without ripping some ordinary, honest, run-of-the-mill, non-maori (we don’t know how we feel about the maoris yet (don’t ask Shane)) working class working worker off, or hiding taxes somewhere or generally being a RICH SELFISH PRICK.

And he did a degree huh. So it sounds like he is more than willing to suck from the public teat BUT not willing to pay 140 cents in the dollar on everything over $90k, so we can make sure that no child is left in poverty and if he disagrees then he is a child hater.

While I really like your suggestion BLiP, I really think you’re letting the side down with such a limp wristed suggestion (NOT an attack on homosexuals, BTW I only discriminate against RICH F*CKS). Child hating, selfish rich prick, public teat sucking parasites like this deserve nothing better than the GUILLOTINE!

so the guest poster can tell from eavesdropping on a private conversation about Blair and Iraq that said speaker was a business man and also rich and therefore as he disliked this person it then proves tax cuts are bad.
