Mike Hosking’s unusual take on the Christchurch massacre

Of all the dumb insensitive takes on the Christchurch massacre Mike Hosking’s recent effort has to be the worst (clickbait link).

He spends a lot of time saying that Christchurch should not hold itself to blame.  He concludes that it was not Christchurch’s fault, the same way it would not have been any city or town’s fault.

He then concludes, wait for this, that the target was a religious target and not a geographical target.

He then mentions the earthquake and concludes that an earthquake and a terrorist assault on a mosque are two different things.

He then talks about how some people may be thinking of moving but they should not because we should never give into fear.

That was it.

What was missing from this most senior of pontificators was any reference to the scene of the tragedy being a mosque, or the victims being Muslims praying at the mosque.  Nor was there any reference to the motivation of the shooter being a fascist whose actions had been fuelled by exposure to crazed white supremacist propaganda on the net.

Nor was there any mention about the hate that fuelled his actions or how the dangerous rhetoric about immigrants that Donald Trump has been engaged in for the past few years apparently inspired the terrorist.

I wonder if this was because Hosking has a soft spot for Trump?

Maybe he should try again.  Talk about the anguish caused to Aotearoa’s Muslim community rather than the people of Christchurch.  And denounce the evil beliefs and motivations of the terrorist.

How on earth can something considered and thoughtful be expected from someone who has made millions from instant, top-of-the-head, one-liners ?

    Doesn’t happen.

  2. Lynnette Williams 2

    He’s a complete plank.
(PS. People were ‘praying’ not ‘preying’.)

    [Oops now fixed – MS]

    • NZJester 2.1

Actually, people were ‘preying’. They were preying on the victims to spread their Right -Wing nonsense. Those who spread a lot of that Right-Wing rhetoric are also Preying on the corporate owned media failing to check facts when they claim nothing they said resulted in this tragedy.

That is because this has left some “commentators” like him, and some politicians, nowhere to go after years of preying on the fears of middle NZ and is something on a wider scale that fed the culture of division that has evolved in NZ and elsewhere.
It is as close as their dogmas and lack of ability enables them to get toward reason, I don’t believe they go there willingly hence the lack of purpose and sense in his “article” which is purely a poor and shallow attempt to cling on to some “relevance” in the “marketplace”.

Yes. In this piece today he literally begs for his divisive right-wing voice not to be stifled. I think he can see the writing on the wall and doesn’t like one bit having the eyes of the world study his and his friends views in any detail.

Like Farrar, Hosking is beginning to look very uncomfortable.

He calls Fraser ‘duly elected’ cos to him, if it’s legal, 19 votes gets a Senator who is thus inviolate for having a swanky title.

Whereas, as Hosk has told us previously, National was clearly the winner of our elections being the party that got the most goats, and we’ve all been rorted. 😉

+ 1 yep – when the light shines the rats scuttle away to find more shadows – not just in writing and deed but in their minds.

        • SPC 3.1.1.2

People have won elections with less votes under FPP and electoral college elections and under MMP in Germany the largest party failed to form a coalition and thus another group of parties did.

But only National and its supporters here ever claimed that they were the winners of the election when another goup of parties took up government office. Making them a unique and intolerant group.

          • Dukeofurl 3.1.1.2.1

Labour is the largest party in Australian Parliament ( HR)

Anning wasnt duly elected…. the person who was elected was removed as being ineligible to sit in Senate ( dual nationality) and under the rules , a recount was done with the votes and only then was Anning declared elected.- So he was the ‘second count Senator’ ( next on the list)
if you become ineligible after the election, you then get a replacement appointed by the same party.

I bet we will never hear these words from Hoskings lips ‘duly elected labour-NZ First Government’

He can see his brand of reasoning (or the lack of it) disappearing fast down the plughole because the complexities this atrocity has thrown up is way beyond his ability to even comprehend let alone articulate.

Poor old Hoskie. He’s going to become irrelevant and just a nonentity like the rest of us. How will he cope?

As a live stream doesn’t preclude the possibility of the use of pre-recorded material, the video material of the nut in the car can conversely be used as a way to look at any possibility of a ‘switch’ in the process where there wouldn’t be otherwise, by providing material made up of many elements able to be checked, of the day and time of the driving.

Please don’t. And I’m speaking as someone who is naturally curious and open to off the wall ideas, so I’m not unsympathetic to your motives.

The ok sign touches the top of the thumb. Touching below the top of the thumb makes it (supposedly) a p so wp for white power.

Don’t do it. The okay sign isn’t a white supremacists hand gesture. Welcome to the culture wars nub.

      • Sam 5.1.6

And you should bloody well know better than to use Wikipedia as a source.

        • lprent 5.1.6.1

The link was there to provide a starting place for others to look at.

The idea of debate is to look at argument or links, not to make some kind of rigid religious fuckwittery attempt to look as knowledgeable as a teenage boy showing off.

In this case, if you pull your finger out of your lower brain for long enough (and wipe the brown stuff off) to actually read the link and the links off it, then you will find that it is reasonably accurate in that it was (and probably still is a alt-right meme – artificial or not)

If you have a thing about wikipedia, then you should explain that and put it up for debate in OpenMike. I’m sure you will be educated…

In the meantime I have noticed that you seem to delight in telling others what they should do. It isn’t something that is that acceptable. Learn to listen rather than being an obnoxious dimwit.

          • Sam 5.1.6.1.1

So some one years ago argues in an essay on the 4Chan that the okay hand gesture is a racist hand gesture which was argued so elegantly as to fool social justice worriers and the liberal media establishment into thinking some ones head cannon is reason enough to put feeling over facts.

The meme being that radical leftists are ideologically driven and when some one points out the fact that at no time in history was an okay sign racist, kind of like Hitler looking for historical references to a pure Arian race.

Congrats printer. You picked up the meme. Eat it, poo poo, only for your specimens to the pick up the poo poo and spread it all over your safe place.

            • lprent 5.1.6.1.1.1

Jez you really are a dimwit, and guess what – that was what wikipedia said… The link said.

n 2017, the OK gesture was at the center of an online prank in meme culture related to alt-right and white supremacy originating from anonymous message board posts on the website 4chan.[36] The Boston Globe reported that users on 4chan’s “/pol/” (Politically Incorrect) board were instructed in February 2017 to “flood Twitter and other social media websites…claiming that the OK hand sign is a symbol of white supremacy,” as part of a campaign dubbed “Operation O-KKK”.[37] The association of the gesture with white supremacy derived from the assertion that the three upheld fingers resemble a ‘W’ and the circle made with the thumb and forefinger resemble the head of a ‘P’, together standing for “white power”.[38] While some members of the alt-right used the symbol after the launch of the 4chan campaign, it remained ambiguous whether or not it was being used to communicate genuine adherence to white supremacy, or with deliberately ironic motives

              etc

Do you have problem with clicking the link or are you just incapable of reading, or using your brain to understand?

              • Sam

Word of advice. Don’t click on forign links on anonymous online message boards no matter how sexy they look.

It’s the most beautiful irony I’ve ever seen, and I love it.

      • Ovid 5.1.7

The Anti-Defamation League covers the ok sign at length at https://www.adl.org/blog/how-the-ok-symbol-became-a-popular-trolling-gesture

The terrorist’s ancillary actions – apparently his manifesto was littered with internet memes, there was his declaration exhorting people to subscribe to a prominent Youtuber and his flashing of this gesture – are all meant to sow division among people who aren’t clued in to alt-right rhetoric. Such statements and gestures are both an in-group shibboleth and a distraction from the harm these people seek to inflict.

        • lprent 5.1.7.1

          Good link.

          Interesting read allright.

So the signals are in-jokes for incels.

And those boards offer society memes, bullshit, and terror.

I can’t see them being of any real value at all – except to the owner cashing in.

          • arkie 5.1.7.2.1

            Anonymous began on 4chan

            There’s some value there

            • lprent 5.1.7.2.1.1

I’m rather dubious about the benefits to society of anonymous myself.

It is often extremely hard to see what in the hell they are trying to achieve with some of their campaigns.

The main benefit that I notice is that appears to a loose society dedicated to encourage the hardening of computer systems. Just like spam artists, various hacker groups, ransomware groups, government spy shops, Nigerian scammers, and others of the same ilk

While that is no doubt a laudable objective, I’m not sure that it really assists the world in helping groups like the KKK to defend their systems better.

              /sarcasm off

              • arkie

                Yeah it is some value.

I agree their targets are wildly varying but I still see forcing hate sites to spend money to upgrade their security as a good thing.

At the least it shows these hate groups that while some people will host their sites, other people are actively trying to stop the wider internet from accessing it.

                • WeTheBleeple

I liked some of their antics. I thought releasing names of child porn
subscribers was clever – surely it’d scare them all off! I have no idea what the real effect was it certainly didn’t stop it it’d be world headlines.

The fluidity of membership and (lack of) leadership structure must drive authorities bat shit. It is a bit disconcerting in this climate – who lurks behind door number one…

“We [Anonymous] just happen to be a group of people on the Internet who need—just kind of an outlet to do as we wish, that we wouldn’t be able to do in regular society”

A bit entitled: To do as we wish… [outside of] society.

Guess we can be grateful that many governments and corporations of the world are so villainous it was more radical for some of the hackers to play at Robin Hood.

I’m (kind of) glad they’re out there. They’ve stepped up against some bigger players. Win or lose they made them seem less invincible.

  6. Kat 6

The Hosk this morning promoting the meme that the world is fully of nutters such as the mosque killer that nothing can be done about, however people such as Australian senator Anning and USA president Trump who are duly elected in the worlds democracies should be able to be heard, rationally.

Bit of self promotion going on here from the Hosk.

The highly-original ‘one bad apple’ theory. Convenient when you’re a cider-pusher.

  7. Peter 7

Funny when there gets to be intellectual analysis of Hosking’s emetic outputs. Mostly his discharge itself has the intellectual depth of a wafer after it’s been run over by a road roller. Multiple times.

Before Hosking started his show at 6.00 this morning he was on newstalkzb, on about what he was going to be on about.

He seemed to be aiming for the coalition Government going to be in collapse because of the timeframe of information coming out with more definite detail of gun law changes.

He seemed to be preparing to criticise the fact there was no absolute, specific bill drawn up and available about the changes. The topic is manna because if such had been out, (with lawmakers not having slept for days preparing it while he was in his comfy bed), he could accuse them of being precipitative, of knee-jerk politics and gone on a great defence of his hinterland gun-toting listeners.

That final details aren’t out means of course they are too slow, aren’t taking it seriously and not following up on the initial comments after the tragedy about gun laws.

Better than that though, much more fertile ground to be ploughed for his listeners, is the chance to skew in a lack of immediacy being the sign of disagreement between Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters and a power struggle between Labour and New Zealand First.

Incidents like Christchurch bring out the best in people. They also bring out the scavengers and opportunists. Come on down … Mike Hosking.

    • ianmac 7.1

Will Mike Hoskings write about the way Paula Bennett Minister of Police scrubbed most of the Gun Law changes in a Bill around 2016 I think.

      • tc 7.1.1

Hosks role is to deflect blame from his backers regardless. Media needs to be regulated as the ranting from him and blowhards like Soper and HPA is disingenuous tripe.

They’re making the most politically they can out of this as the paid shills they are.

      • alwyn 7.1.2

Perhaps he could give us the complete historical perspective.
As I have commented elsewhere on this site there hasn’t been a single politician in the last 20 years that has taken any action to toughen up the gun laws in New Zealand.

The last time a proper bill was put before the house was in 1999. It hadn’t been actioned before the election but was taken over by the new Labour Government elected in that year. They originally claimed to be in favour of the legislation.
It went before a select committee but, in the face of major opposition from gun owning groups it was quietly shelved.
The Clark Labour Government never went into the subject again.

Then we had 8 years of a Key National Government and a year of the English Government.
They never tightened anything up either.

Now we have had 17 months of the current Government. They also avoided the topic, until now.

It wasn’t Bennett who is responsible for those MSSA weapons still being around.
It is every Government in the last 20 years who have been scared of getting offside with gun owners, and have done nothing.

        Every single one of them.

And, I am going to suggest that, unless something is done immediately, the subject will quietly be allowed to drop out of consideration again.
Politicians can talk a good story but if they think that they are going to annoy a few hundred thousand voters for whom the question will determine their vote they look away, and back away, from the topic.

        • ianmac 7.1.2.1

You might be right about successive governments failing to act.
“n March 2016, after Police seized 14 illegally owned MSSA weapons in a raid in south Auckland and 4 officers were shot during an armed siege in Kawerau,[15] Parliament’s Law and Order Select Committee announced an Inquiry into issues relating to the illegal possession of firearms in New Zealand.[16] In their final report the committee made 20 recommendations, of which the National government accepted 7 and modified another…..”

So Select Committee choose 20. Paula Bennett deletes 13. And none get passed.

          • alwyn 7.1.2.1.1

You did notice I went right back to the turn of the century did you?
None of those Governments did anything at all.
Did you read that or do you simply froth at the mouth because you think Paula is the source of all evil?

            • ianmac 7.1.2.1.1.1

Yes alwyn. I do acknowledge the long time of lack of action but I suppose that 99% of registered gun owners are pretty careful around guns. So what gun laws can catch the bad guys?
Canada has far more guns per head of population than USA but far fewer gun homicides. Attitudes have to change but whose?

          • Andrew 7.1.2.1.2

“Nash, who was Labour’s police spokesman at the time, said Bennett had “got it 100 per cent right.””

            • lprent 7.1.2.1.2.1

FFS: talk about selective quoting… Perhaps you missed this bit.

Police Minister Stuart Nash, who has been conservative on gun reform in the past, has been assigned to consult with National to try and get cross-party support with the Opposition.

I suspect that he, and maybe Damien O’Connor, would have been just about the only ones that in the Labour caucus who would have thought that.

              • alwyn

Are you saying that the Labour Caucus of the time were really wanting to have much tighter gun restrictions?
If that was the case I am sure that there will be links available showing where the senior MPs spoke up and said that Nash wasn’t speaking for the party.
I am also sure that they would have been moving amendments to the bill to try and add the tougher sections that the National-led Coalition had left out.
I don’t think that happened of course. I think that the Labour Caucus of the time, under whoever was their leader stayed very, very quiet. They would have been just like every other major party. Don’ look over the parapet. The gun enthusiasts might shoot at you.

Thinking about what I said I suppose I shouldn’t just have pointed out that every Government stayed quiet. I should probably have said that every party hoping to get a double digit vote, in Government or Opposition, kept well away from the Gun Lobby. There may have been some mini-party that spoke up but I’m not aware of one.

              • Andrew

Of course I am selective quoting, or I would have added the entire fucking article in quotes, FFS yourself!

I was replying to ianmac, who was having a go at Paula Bennett for not signing up to all of the recommendations at the time. I picked quotes that shows Labour supported her decision at the time. The fact that you couldn’t even find a quote in that article that negates my quote speaks volumes.

Yes, the egg and dildo-based violence of the left is a shocking state of affairs. It’s almost as if someone can’t spend years feeding off the fears they foment without some sort of social repercussion.

Could be worse. they could just be a member of an ethnic or religious minority going about their normal, peaceful, daily business until some fuckwit acts on the hate profitted off by others.

            • Sam 12.2.1.1.1.1

It’s that radical leftists are so well fed they can’t even muster enough emotions to look angry so fall back on “non-violence” and thinks it’s pro.

I suspect leftist eggings might be on the rise soon. The horror, the horror.

                • Sam

You’re giving them too much credit. They are making it up as they go along. No one in 2017 thought white supremacists was a national security threat but here we are. There’s no point in educating stupid, so there’s your first clue.

                  • McFlock

lol thank fuck you caught that typo 🙂

You wanna go on about eggs in response to bullets, feel free. But if some folks didn’t profit off encouraging people like that rogue anus, they wouldn’t have to be backtracking or deleting their old content over the last few days.

            • Shadrach 12.2.1.1.1.2

Or they could have been one of the people shot at a charity baseball game by James Hodgkinson in 2017. Etc.

              • McFlock

Again, not a fucking egg, you egg.

And you’d be hard-pressed to find anything in Sanders’ rhetoric to give the slightest encouragement to that fuckwit, as opposed to the issues the chch fuckwit seemed to focus on.

                • Shadrach

I was responding to your minimising of violence. The left has produced their own special brand of hatred and violence, over many decades. You want more examples? I’m happy to oblige.

                  • McFlock

                    🙄

                    Define “left”.

                    Define “violence”.

                    Define “minimisation”.

                    Then suck my balls.

Eggs aren’t fucking guns. Dildos aren’t fucking guns. 1080 is so harmless they got done for fuckall. Even shit isn’t guns. A 74 page manifesto about eggs is a fucking omlette cookbook. Go take half a dozen eggs and stick them up your arse.

                    • Shadrach

As I said, you are minimising violence. It adds to a list of you’re disgusting attitudes to people you disagree with.

                    • McFlock

Says the fuckwit who wants to focus on an egging in the wake of a massacre.

      • vto 12.2.2

yeah, well I did wonder whether it would be appropriate.. but figured that egg boy got it so very right that it would actually be quite good to see eggs splattered on quite a few heads around the West ….

…. it is after all as low level as is possible, with the exception of cream pies…

maybe bring back the cream pie

        its softer
        and even yummy

as opposed to a (hopefully) rotten egg

        • WeTheBleeple 12.2.2.1

The first sketch I ever wrote, age 6, was a drag show/beauty contest with custard and cream pies for the winners. I got hit with one, it was solider than I’d imagined.

          It is better to give…

          • McFlock 12.2.2.1.1

            Good writing for a 6yo.

I think it was the movie the Great Race that finished with a pie/cake fight. The drunken prince got hit with a brandy cake, so spent the rest of the scene yelling “throw another brandy! Throw more brandy!” 🙂

      • greywarshark 12.2.3

Please make up for our deficits – in a spirit of kindness and solidarity!

      • Mikey Appleby 12.2.4

Incredible, of all the things that could be said in this tragedy, you choose to focus on disapproving comments on someone egging Mike Hosking’s car.

I have noted your comments over the years and they always stood out , even above the other little RWNJ’s for the utter lack of humanity and caring for anyone but yourself.

    • alwyn 12.3

      “Somebody, please egg Hoskings”.
Why does someone else have to carry out your dirty work?
If you really think it should be done why aren’t you brave enough to do it yourself?
And no, I’m not going to. I am a believer that –
“Violence is the last resort of the incompetent”

      • vto 12.3.1

        Sure.

Except this isn’t violence is it

“behaviour involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or something”

        • alwyn 12.3.1.1

Of course you want him damaged.
It would completely ruin his hair styling.
You should be ashamed of yourself for wanting such a thing.

  12. Gabby 13

Be interesting to see what Horeskin’s told to think about gun control.

  13. AB 14

Would quite enjoy seeing the Hosk publicly ‘AOCed’, i.e. figuratively torn to shreds by someone intellectually superior, browner, younger, lefter and femaler.
But the old trougher is too crafty to expose himself to such risk.

    • Jimmy 14.1

He talks to Jacinda every Tuesday morning….she’s not browner but has all the rest?

      • alwyn 14.1.1

You have a wonderfully droll sense of humour.
The last 3 characteristics are certainly true of the PM but you have included, with a straight face apparently the first.
That is the funniest comment I have seen on this site recently and the only one that has given me a good laugh since the events of last Friday.

    • Cinny 14.2

Add taller to that as well please…. lololololz hehehehehe

  14. mosa 15

Shame that once again using his platform for offering nothing worthwhile in this hideous situation shows really that he is irrelevant to the country and the tragedy that kiwis are responding too with compassion.
Just for once he could put aside his agenda and respond with maturity and intelligence to what has happened here.
    But no.
    He lacks both attributes.

  15. Sacha 16

“Hosking has a soft-on for Trump”
    #fixeditforyou

  16. Sabine 17

Well its hard to apply the same vocabulary to a white man – a white man like hoskins – then he would apply to a person of color terrorist. Right? Cause white is good, and non white is not good, and now the dear is confused.

What really could hoskins say about a guy who at 28, healthy, white, is at a point in his live where he would think that the only good thing about him is his white skin and that the thing that makes others his targets are their non white skin.

‘White working class male with economic anxiety ‘ really was only ever long form for ‘racist’.

  17. mauī 18

Not sure if I have a huge problem with what he said. He’s obviously playing to the individual middle-class feelings of guilt and fear. His target market is well to do Cantabs and any wealthy society is going to come from a place of self-interest first.

Never would have expected him to put others first, or put empathy above all else.

  18. ankerawshark 19

This is a time where people like Hoskins could have stepped up. It would have been very helpful.

While I detest guns and gun shops, but I salute the gun shop that is pulling sales of semi automatics and gun owners who are handing them in. So too the ZB stuff in Chch taking down comments about muslims and swimming…..despicable absolutely, but if these types can reflect on how they are part of the problem and take some action, then we have a chance of real change. Me and my progressive friends and those progressives on this blog will of course respond how we are responding. Don’t get me wrong, that is so, so good at this time. But the gun owners the gun shop owners and ZB, if they can shift their point of view and their behaviour, then we really will have change that endures. I pray for that.

  19. I don’t like Hosking, hes a John Key lover, still is. An apologist for corruption etc , etc…

Is this micro analyzing however? … was Hosking speaking in a more generic sense ?

Or was he truly only focusing on the geographic area and extrapolating that to the wider area ? -, while deliberately omitting the demographic that was attacked? Was it a deliberate ploy , or just an unwise ‘critique’?

Don’t egg me, I’m only playing Devils advocate here. Its a lousy job but someones got to do it…

  20. Rae 21

Sean Plonker is doing the same, absolutely refusing to acknowledge that far right wing politics feature in this awful occurrence. Started off today with some sort of “woke left” rant, but I see he hasn’t gone back to that when a caller pointed out that perhaps the perpetrator is an example of the “woke right”.
Still trying to make out he is Jesus Christ as well.

  21. Michael 22

Hosking is another alt-right arsehole spewing hateful memes over our airwaves and getting paid far too much for doing it. Shut him and his channel down just like Murdoch’s outfit. We don’t need to hear from either source again.

    • Colin 22.1

Why does the Hosk have the biggest following on morning Radio if all your Negative comments have any support.

    • Skunk Weed 22.2

He was born in Christchurch, went to Linwood High School, probably related to all the White Trash in Christchurch.

  22. Skunk Weed 23

The Hosk and the Plonker are two peas out of the same pod. Uneducated white trash reporters who have made a name for themselves in NZ’s uneducated click bait media, both are commentators for the RWNJ owners and editors of our local rags.

[lprent: Better but still not up to standard. See previous note ]

  23. Pat 24

    News Flash…Mike Hosking is a fuckwit…and in other news…..

  24. JustMe 25

Mike Hosking and so many other biased towards the NZ National Party so-called journalists are the Mouthpieces of the NZ National Party.

I quite often think, though I do not bother reading any of Hosking’s articles because they are just so pointless and mind numbing to read, that some former National Party politician that is great mates with Hosking etc has written many of his articles. He(Hosking)just puts his names to the articles.

Looking at Hosking on say the telly or in the news makes me wonder what drugs he is on???!!! His physical appearance makes him look rather sweaty and I once heard a certain A Class drug can cause that sort of physical appearance. Now I am not inferring that he is ON drugs but he certainly looks like something that has a problem.

I truly think Hosking has an over-inflated opinion of himself. He thinks everyone in NZ and the world wants to listen to him. Perhaps we could say he suffers from the disease of ‘Ego, Look at me(like John Key)’ along thinking he is a big fish in a little pond(that is NZ).

Maybe John Key writes those articles that Hosking applies his name to!

As he shows no concern for those victims of the Christchurch mosque killings then it shows him up as being a very shallow person. He is an ideal representative of the NZ National Party.

  25. R.P Mcmurphy 26

hoksing is a horrible little man and I for one have just about had enough of him.

  26. peterlepaysan 27

I always thought that trump and hosking shared a twitter feed.
The insight and intellectual power is equivalent.

  27. Anne 28

I wonder how that staff member is feeling about being tagged “an emotional junior staffer” for public consumption. Bet its a young woman who are the most vulnerable in these situations.
