Mike Hosking’s unusual take on the Christchurch massacre

Of all the dumb insensitive takes on the Christchurch massacre Mike Hosking’s recent effort has to be the worst (clickbait link).

He spends a lot of time saying that Christchurch should not hold itself to blame.  He concludes that it was not Christchurch’s fault, the same way it would not have been any city or town’s fault.

He then concludes, wait for this, that the target was a religious target and not a geographical target.

He then mentions the earthquake and concludes that an earthquake and a terrorist assault on a mosque are two different things.

He then talks about how some people may be thinking of moving but they should not because we should never give into fear.

That was it.

What was missing from this most senior of pontificators was any reference to the scene of the tragedy being a mosque, or the victims being Muslims praying at the mosque.  Nor was there any reference to the motivation of the shooter being a fascist whose actions had been fuelled by exposure to crazed white supremacist propaganda on the net.

Nor was there any mention about the hate that fuelled his actions or how the dangerous rhetoric about immigrants that Donald Trump has been engaged in for the past few years apparently inspired the terrorist.

I wonder if this was because Hosking has a soft spot for Trump?

Maybe he should try again.  Talk about the anguish caused to Aotearoa’s Muslim community rather than the people of Christchurch.  And denounce the evil beliefs and motivations of the terrorist.

    That is because this has left some “commentators” like him, and some politicians, nowhere to go after years of preying on the fears of middle NZ and is something on a wider scale that fed the culture of division that has evolved in NZ and elsewhere.
    It is as close as their dogmas and lack of ability enables them to get toward reason, I don’t believe they go there willingly hence the lack of purpose and sense in his “article” which is purely a poor and shallow attempt to cling on to some “relevance” in the “marketplace”.

          People have won elections with less votes under FPP and electoral college elections and under MMP in Germany the largest party failed to form a coalition and thus another group of parties did.

          But only National and its supporters here ever claimed that they were the winners of the election when another goup of parties took up government office. Making them a unique and intolerant group.

            Labour is the largest party in Australian Parliament ( HR)

            Anning wasnt duly elected…. the person who was elected was removed as being ineligible to sit in Senate ( dual nationality) and under the rules , a recount was done with the votes and only then was Anning declared elected.- So he was the ‘second count Senator’ ( next on the list)
            if you become ineligible after the election, you then get a replacement appointed by the same party.

            I bet we will never hear these words from Hoskings lips ‘duly elected labour-NZ First Government’

    As a live stream doesn’t preclude the possibility of the use of pre-recorded material, the video material of the nut in the car can conversely be used as a way to look at any possibility of a ‘switch’ in the process where there wouldn’t be otherwise, by providing material made up of many elements able to be checked, of the day and time of the driving.

          The link was there to provide a starting place for others to look at.

          The idea of debate is to look at argument or links, not to make some kind of rigid religious fuckwittery attempt to look as knowledgeable as a teenage boy showing off.

          In this case, if you pull your finger out of your lower brain for long enough (and wipe the brown stuff off) to actually read the link and the links off it, then you will find that it is reasonably accurate in that it was (and probably still is a alt-right meme – artificial or not)

          If you have a thing about wikipedia, then you should explain that and put it up for debate in OpenMike. I’m sure you will be educated…

          In the meantime I have noticed that you seem to delight in telling others what they should do. It isn’t something that is that acceptable. Learn to listen rather than being an obnoxious dimwit.

        The terrorist’s ancillary actions – apparently his manifesto was littered with internet memes, there was his declaration exhorting people to subscribe to a prominent Youtuber and his flashing of this gesture – are all meant to sow division among people who aren’t clued in to alt-right rhetoric. Such statements and gestures are both an in-group shibboleth and a distraction from the harm these people seek to inflict.

              I’m rather dubious about the benefits to society of anonymous myself.

              It is often extremely hard to see what in the hell they are trying to achieve with some of their campaigns.

              The main benefit that I notice is that appears to a loose society dedicated to encourage the hardening of computer systems. Just like spam artists, various hacker groups, ransomware groups, government spy shops, Nigerian scammers, and others of the same ilk

              While that is no doubt a laudable objective, I’m not sure that it really assists the world in helping groups like the KKK to defend their systems better.

                Yeah it is some value.

                I agree their targets are wildly varying but I still see forcing hate sites to spend money to upgrade their security as a good thing.

                At the least it shows these hate groups that while some people will host their sites, other people are actively trying to stop the wider internet from accessing it.

    Funny when there gets to be intellectual analysis of Hosking’s emetic outputs. Mostly his discharge itself has the intellectual depth of a wafer after it’s been run over by a road roller. Multiple times.

    Before Hosking started his show at 6.00 this morning he was on newstalkzb, on about what he was going to be on about.

    He seemed to be aiming for the coalition Government going to be in collapse because of the timeframe of information coming out with more definite detail of gun law changes.

    He seemed to be preparing to criticise the fact there was no absolute, specific bill drawn up and available about the changes. The topic is manna because if such had been out, (with lawmakers not having slept for days preparing it while he was in his comfy bed), he could accuse them of being precipitative, of knee-jerk politics and gone on a great defence of his hinterland gun-toting listeners.

    That final details aren’t out means of course they are too slow, aren’t taking it seriously and not following up on the initial comments after the tragedy about gun laws.

    Better than that though, much more fertile ground to be ploughed for his listeners, is the chance to skew in a lack of immediacy being the sign of disagreement between Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters and a power struggle between Labour and New Zealand First.

    Incidents like Christchurch bring out the best in people. They also bring out the scavengers and opportunists. Come on down … Mike Hosking.

        Perhaps he could give us the complete historical perspective.
        As I have commented elsewhere on this site there hasn’t been a single politician in the last 20 years that has taken any action to toughen up the gun laws in New Zealand.

        The last time a proper bill was put before the house was in 1999. It hadn’t been actioned before the election but was taken over by the new Labour Government elected in that year. They originally claimed to be in favour of the legislation.
        It went before a select committee but, in the face of major opposition from gun owning groups it was quietly shelved.
        The Clark Labour Government never went into the subject again.

        Then we had 8 years of a Key National Government and a year of the English Government.
        They never tightened anything up either.

        Now we have had 17 months of the current Government. They also avoided the topic, until now.

        It wasn’t Bennett who is responsible for those MSSA weapons still being around.
        It is every Government in the last 20 years who have been scared of getting offside with gun owners, and have done nothing.

        Every single one of them.

        And, I am going to suggest that, unless something is done immediately, the subject will quietly be allowed to drop out of consideration again.
        Politicians can talk a good story but if they think that they are going to annoy a few hundred thousand voters for whom the question will determine their vote they look away, and back away, from the topic.

          So Select Committee choose 20. Paula Bennett deletes 13. And none get passed.

              Yes alwyn. I do acknowledge the long time of lack of action but I suppose that 99% of registered gun owners are pretty careful around guns. So what gun laws can catch the bad guys?
              Canada has far more guns per head of population than USA but far fewer gun homicides. Attitudes have to change but whose?

              Police Minister Stuart Nash, who has been conservative on gun reform in the past, has been assigned to consult with National to try and get cross-party support with the Opposition.

              I suspect that he, and maybe Damien O’Connor, would have been just about the only ones that in the Labour caucus who would have thought that.

                Are you saying that the Labour Caucus of the time were really wanting to have much tighter gun restrictions?
                If that was the case I am sure that there will be links available showing where the senior MPs spoke up and said that Nash wasn’t speaking for the party.
                I am also sure that they would have been moving amendments to the bill to try and add the tougher sections that the National-led Coalition had left out.
                I don’t think that happened of course. I think that the Labour Caucus of the time, under whoever was their leader stayed very, very quiet. They would have been just like every other major party. Don’ look over the parapet. The gun enthusiasts might shoot at you.

                Thinking about what I said I suppose I shouldn’t just have pointed out that every Government stayed quiet. I should probably have said that every party hoping to get a double digit vote, in Government or Opposition, kept well away from the Gun Lobby. There may have been some mini-party that spoke up but I’m not aware of one.

                I was replying to ianmac, who was having a go at Paula Bennett for not signing up to all of the recommendations at the time. I picked quotes that shows Labour supported her decision at the time. The fact that you couldn’t even find a quote in that article that negates my quote speaks volumes.

    While I detest guns and gun shops, but I salute the gun shop that is pulling sales of semi automatics and gun owners who are handing them in. So too the ZB stuff in Chch taking down comments about muslims and swimming…..despicable absolutely, but if these types can reflect on how they are part of the problem and take some action, then we have a chance of real change. Me and my progressive friends and those progressives on this blog will of course respond how we are responding. Don’t get me wrong, that is so, so good at this time. But the gun owners the gun shop owners and ZB, if they can shift their point of view and their behaviour, then we really will have change that endures. I pray for that.

    Mike Hosking and so many other biased towards the NZ National Party so-called journalists are the Mouthpieces of the NZ National Party.

    I quite often think, though I do not bother reading any of Hosking’s articles because they are just so pointless and mind numbing to read, that some former National Party politician that is great mates with Hosking etc has written many of his articles. He(Hosking)just puts his names to the articles.

    Looking at Hosking on say the telly or in the news makes me wonder what drugs he is on???!!! His physical appearance makes him look rather sweaty and I once heard a certain A Class drug can cause that sort of physical appearance. Now I am not inferring that he is ON drugs but he certainly looks like something that has a problem.

    I truly think Hosking has an over-inflated opinion of himself. He thinks everyone in NZ and the world wants to listen to him. Perhaps we could say he suffers from the disease of ‘Ego, Look at me(like John Key)’ along thinking he is a big fish in a little pond(that is NZ).

    Maybe John Key writes those articles that Hosking applies his name to!

    As he shows no concern for those victims of the Christchurch mosque killings then it shows him up as being a very shallow person. He is an ideal representative of the NZ National Party.
