   Show the people what really makes up the national party. C’mon Paula, Maggie, Melissa etc people are ready for the female view as they’ve got bill and Simons.

     Unfortunately, most in National get the idea that saying what they actually think will tip voters off to the fact that they’re obnoxious dim bulbs. O’Connor must be unusually deficient in intellect even for National.

   Simon O’Connor is a fully trained but un-ordained Catholic priest.

   He is just a bit more honest than the rest of the the bigoted religious right that infest the National party, starting with the boss Bill and Mary English who are also full-on retard Catholics.

     Another typical iniquity produced by the reforms was the case of 64-year-old Rau Williams, who died of renal failure a few weeks after being denied treatment. Likely to have lived another few years with dialysis treatment, doctors at Whangarei Hospital decided his numerous other ailments disqualified him from further treatment and sent him home to die.

     English would rather voters forget all about Rau Williams.

     Better to class O’Connor as a reactionary type who happens to be Catholic.
     ( I am not Catholic, but worry about bigotry wherever it comes from).
     O’Connor certainly took up and seemingly wrongly embellished for his /National’s own ends Jacinda’s comments on suicide.

   Simon O’Connor knows full-well the difference but for those who don’t here are a couple of etymology links:

     Even David Seymour, for all his faults, knows the difference and has called O’Connor a dick.

     One of the main differences between suicide and euthanasia (or assisted suicide) is that many of those who are committing suicide are young. I am not aware that there are droves of terminally ill young people wanting the State’s assistance to die. Its mostly older people who want that option. To compare the two and say they are one and the same is dishonest.

       Assisted dying is more accurate than assisted suicide. Seymour has a private member’s bill before parliament which would legalise assisted dying.

   I know that, in this secular age, discussing a person’s religion might be considered bad form but there was a photo published a year or so ago depicting National “inner circle”. I think I am correct in saying that the only non RC was John Key himself. The rest were St Bedes Old Boys (including Peter Dunne) apart from Steven Joyce who is a self confessed “lapsed Catholic. The “State Aid for Private Schools” battle was lost long ago and private schools continue to get healthy subsidies. However, and as a balancing comment, it needs to be remembered that New Zealand’s greatest Prime Minister was Michael Joseph Savage, a devout Roman Catholic who certainly brought Christian values to government.

     In this Parliament there were six MPs who were St Bede’s Old Boys- Gerry Brownlee, Peter Dunne, Clayton Cosgrove, Damien O’Connor, David Carter, Matt Doocey.

     What is interesting is that one school provided 5% of current MPs. The motto of
     St Bede’s College is “Fide et Opere” which translates as “By faith and by work”. In other words, ‘good works’ are as important as your faith. This precept was taught and forms a basis for social action. Four of the six became Labour MPs at first. (disclaimer- I am an old boy of St Bede’s, known as the ‘class communist’. Three of my parents’ four sons stood for political candidacy, all unsuccessfully. The common cause was social justice, fairness, a call to serve.)

     MJ Savage characterised socialism as “Christianity in action.” He was right, and still should be, come 23/9.

       Spot on Mac1. There probably wouldnt have been a Labour Party if not for RC influence as the bedrock was West Coast Irish and the desire for social equity and the implementation of christian tenets in the treatment of others.

       My apologies Mac1. Bill English attended St Patrick’s College in Siverstream. I should have checked. I also note that he boarded at Selwyn College in Dunedin. This is an Anglican student Hostel so his background is fairly catholic. I am not a Roman Catholic but am married to one (not devout I have to say) and I think that it is widely acknowledged that the RC church here and Australia has had a strong Irish influence under-pinning it. Given the social background of Ireland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century it is not surprising that its membership would have been anti-establishment although many of the early Labour Parliamentarians came from the UK and almost certainly from working class backgrounds. An interesting discussion but a bit “off topic”. Sorry. PS. Pity there were not more Quakers walking the corridors of power.

         Funnily enough, that’s what I became,MM; though I tried I never got to walk in those corridors of power. There is still enough opportunity though to “speak truth to power” outside Parliament. Marian Hobbs was the only Quaker I knew of getting into our Parliament.

         One of the spin-offs of a Catholic education is a sense of social conservatism that most of our Catholic boys in the House seem not to have shed. This of course came out in Simon O’Connor’s remarks. For a man with four degrees and the logical training of a priest, he seems to have fallen easily into logical fallacies. Not a man for counting angels, obviously.

         It’d be interesting to find out who was raised Catholic in the House and how many have lapsed- what I call ‘slipped Micks”.

     It was a cheap play – he was probably trying to avoid a backlash from his no-show at the suicide event. His ‘scruples’ were not troubled by Joyce’s lie.

    There goes a staunch Kethlik who’s only greater God is the search for power and Neshnool Party ideology. Even the bloody Pope is questioning followers such as the ‘HE Simon – and for that matter the Bill’
    Just as there are those in other cultures and religions aligned with Natzi religion that seems to trump the primary values they claim as their religious label. Faith quite obviously comes at a cost and is up for sale these days. I find it hard to understand the Bling’s claim to Catholisism, just as I do a Singh Bakshi’s claim to Sikhism. (The latter I know swans around various temples and has some campaign to have a right to carry the Kirpan, but all the while abrogating all/almost every other Sikh value.) Again …. Ew!
    Actually, the more I think about it, and in the context of all other NZ Sikhs suffering here: ew e w E W! Really. EW!!!! fucking EW! Throw em a crumb or two eh Bakshi? and maybe one day they’ll get PR and vote for You – the Almighty. In the meantime just go ahead and fight for the symbolic right to carry the Kirpan – rather than an actual right to live and eat.
    But then why not eh? Greed is good, all is commodified and a monetary value (completely unaligned to a free-market) is assingend.

    I’m waiting for the Catholic Church heirarchy to make a statement, but I fear it’ll be as piss weak as chastising child abuser Priests sent off to the Pacific Iles as a form of pennance, but to further abuse little Island Bois that didn’t really matter on account of their having dark skin. But …. Simon???? You were saying????? We’re waiting (and probably waiting and waiting)
