Selwyn Manning has set up and will edit a new site http://EveningReport.nz/. Nice to see another progressive net news and current affairs site being set up. You can read the press release here.
EveningReport.nz launches tonight (8pm, March 9, 2015) and is established under its ‘Independent Interactive Debate’ brand.
EveningReport.nz launches with an extended one-on-one interview with investigative journalist Nicky Hager on the Snowden Revelations.
This e-media site is less tribal than a blog, is independent at its core, and driven by public interest fourth estate journalism principles.
The interview will be interesting. I agree about the tribalism, however that is partially at the heart of what blogs are about. They are a place to argue things out and that isn’t done in a arena of superficial congeniality like a academic or journalistic environs. It is more like a bar as people sort out the issues of the day and the decade to their own satisfaction.
But we need things to chew over.
Manning has 22 years experience as a journalist, and specialises in investigative journalism, politics, foreign affairs, intelligence and security analysis.
He is a regular commentator on radio in New Zealand, Australia, and abroad, and has delivered reportage and analysis via all expressions of media including: television, internet, newspapers and magazines.
Manning has established the EveningReport.nz, as he believes New Zealanders are interested in following big issues and deserve a place to go where extensive-robust debate is encouraged irrespective of a person’s politics or beliefs.
Pretty much what we try to do here. We set bouncer rules of minimum standards of behaviour and very fast and abrupt responses to people pushing the boundaries. Not that dissimilar to what I used to do in public bars and nightclubs I worked in when I was younger. They suit the culture we want to foster of an open robust debate, but one where everyone gets a chance to have a say because the dickheads are booted out until their behaviour improves.
“I’ve become tired of the infighting on some of the progressive blogs, and I believe a wider audience should have an independently positioned outlet that is less interested in attack lines and more interested in extending debate on big issues,” Selwyn Manning said.
“So EveningReport.nz is more analysis, and fourth-estate-based debate, as opposed to a polarising blog site.
“And as editor, I’m looking for well-researched, well argued submissions, from journalists and writers who wish to expand on current affairs reportage. But I am also inviting submissions from people, irrespective of their background or community, who have something to contribute to the New Zealand debate,” Selwyn Manning said.
Indeed. I don’t particularly like having to defend this site from some of the crazy shit that has being going down on the left either. Bad enough dealing with it from the right, although that has largely died down now. But it is a waste of my time and the time of others involved in the site to have to deal with. However rising gracefully above and turning the other cheek to fools spreading ridiculous memes is something that seldom works. So I have to waste the time that could be better spent on other things.
But it is going to be good to have another outlet for the longish analysis that we don’t really want do here. Our task is to promote a robust debate with a reasonable behavioural standard. But having more material to read, disagree with (and maybe even agree with), and link to is awesome.
Nice to see Selwyn setting it up, and nice to see a newly minted .nz domain tag as well.

Pity its so badly let down on subject matter.
Do the owners really think NZ needs another left wing propaganda outlet? I went there last night and thought, wow this looks good, and then I saw the contributors were Nicky Hagar, Keith Locke and Paul Buchanan.
Then I saw the first couple of comments were by some pathetic loser called Phil Ure, who presumes to a political expertise and wisdom that is belied by his own derelict circumstance.
Really, if there is one thing NZ doesn’t need its another boilerplate left wing site. Haven’t its owners noticed that the most successful broadcasters in the US are Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, etc and FOX News. None of them seek to shove any tired old left wing poop down people’s throats.
The broad population don’t want left wing cant. Even existing LW blogs have small audiences compared to WhaleOil and Kiwiblog.
Its a shame to see the impressive technical expertise and innovation of the Evening Report squandered on content that is already over catered for and that very few people overall will want.

Kiwiblog has been going for about 5 years longer than us and built up its audience slowly. However it has been static for a while now and started dropping compared to previous years. Feb 2014 had 702620 page views, a year later it is 541919. In the same months we rose from 316531 to 417128.
This shift in growth from right to left has been a consistent pattern for some time. Our post election growth spurt appears to have been somewhere between 20 and 30%. Kiwiblog appears to have had a similar percentage drop.
But for a good solid comparison in a high readership month have a look at the pageviews from election month last year. KB had 1093806 page views. However we had 868342. Looks like the audiences aren’t that different any more.
And Whaleoil’s stats are just a joke. I presume that he has simply paid some outfit to push them up. If you look back in the stats it isn’t hard to see when they were hired. Over several months his stats rose from having about 300k page views per month to over a million. Since then it has steadily increased, presumably so he can fleece advertisers.
Or possibly as a substitute for a good sized codpiece.. You do have to wonder about people who are that insecure. What exactly are they trying to substitute for? 😈
BTW: I ignore “Visits” as the numbers for those between sitemeter, statcounter, and google analytics vary by about 50% for the same period and settings on our site. They also don’t account for the users who sit on the site for more than 1800 seconds browsing in a session. Don’t know why Ken bothers with visits.
OK, well we’ll see how it goes, won’t we.
Yes. Over the decades I have noticed this kind of thing shifting and moving around in response to the outside world and the changes in society.
But at present we seem to be having a shift in NZ away from what you refer as the “left John Key” to the even lefter position that I tend to hold and the further left position of the commenters of this site. This is reflected in the waxing and waning of blog sites.
