In the past week a relative and a neighbour of 5 years need to look for a new rental, they both recieve supported living payment. Just over 4 years ago when my landlord sold I had to leave the property. It was hard enough back then in the private market, now it has become out of reach for people who even earn the minimum wage.

The out lay to move into another property is expensive, 2 weeks rent, 4 weeks bond, removal of furniture, transference of the internet and power.

I had a mother on my street last year give away her furniture because it was too expensive to transport furniture to another region.

When it comes to my relative family will need to help financially and not have an expectation to be paid back.

The stress created by needing to move can be high and not knowing if again the landlord will sell would be unsettling.

The waiting lists for subsidised housing are high. People should not have to rely on being lucky to be selected to be housed.

Incredible, just listened to RNZ Concert Program midday news…literally only one story today, apparently nothing else happened in the world today except Trump was impeached. Five Americans die (three of them because of existing health issues) during an over the top protest/riot at their place of work and and the US political elites from both sides can suddenly get together to get something done…all the while thousands of Americans are dying through a lack of health care, millions of Americans have no health care, can't pay rent or overheads and months go by with nothing to help them because these same political elites can't work together to help them…..it's no wonder people are starting to invade their spaces, too bad the Left are not doing the same.

Are the Republicans suddenly going to realise how much misery is in the US once Biden is inaugurated?

This is an easy target for the opposition, I have seen it time and time again when National are voted out.

Amazing that 10 Republicans voted for impeachment. When to have the impeachment trial needs to be considered. Probably after the inauguration.

Treetop,2.1. The problem with impeachment is that it needs 17 Republican senators to grow both spines and consciences. Doesn't seem too likely to me. But a 14th amendment motion barring Trump from further federal office would take a simple 50%; with the VP as tie-breaker after January 20th.

Well, strictly speaking, the senate quorum is 51, and the impeachment conviction only needs 2/3 of those present.

So if enough jellyfish Repugs decide they want Hairplug Himmler convicted on his impeachment, well, there could be an outbreak of the Trump flu and sadly they would have to self-quarantine and be unable to participate in the vote.

There's almost certainly twice as many Dems plus Repugs willing to vote him convicted (Romney, Sasse, Murkowski, maybe McConnell …) than there are Repugs keen to vote for acquittal. The rest of the jellyfish would probably be very happy to just swim for the bottom. McConnell would probably be happy to let them.

What happens to all those Senate votes when their senators are too in jail for treason to cast their ballots? 50 out of 75 is also 2/3rds. It'd look superdodgy though!

Well now, that's a pleasant thought! Give me a few quiet moments to just contemplate it.

              … mmmmmmmm …

Sadly, I've only heard Josh Hawley (Missouri) and Ted Cruz (Tex-asssss) mentioned as possibly facing serious consequences.

If any senators did reach the point of getting jailed, they'd be turfed out of the senate, and their state's governor would appoint a replacement quick-smart.

Does a senate impeachment hearing need to take place before a 14th ammendment motion can take place?

If not why was the 14th ammendment motion not actioned and does this need to be auctioned before Trump leaves office?

I will re read the link.

          • Treetop 2.1.1.2.1

Too late to edit the auctioned for actioned.

Enforcement of the 14th Amendment requires legislation to be passed. That means it must pass both the House and the Senate, and then be signed by the President. Obviously Presidolt Sharpie is not going to sign legislation barring him from office, so he would sit on it for the longest time allowed (ten days), and then maybe formally veto it or just let it run out the clock (pocket veto). Then if Congress wants, they can override the veto by passing it again with a 2/3 majority in both chambers, and requires more Representatives to vote for it than impeachment.

Clearly that's not going to happen before 20th January.

Whereas pushing the overboiled cauliflower to exercise his 25th Amendment powers might (but didn't) remove the decomposing jack'o'lantern earlier. Impeachment and conviction could also have happened before Jan 20th (but won't).

In the new session of Congress with Dems in control of both chambers of Congress and the preznitzy, a 14th Amendment action for insurrection may well happen. That action may also include Cruz, Hawley, and a few Representatives like Lauren Boebert who allegedly took the insurrectionists on a scoping-out tour of the Capitol on the Jan 5th, the day before the insurrection.
