The US has kept a standing army of ~100,000 in Europe for eighty years – thats the price of peace in Europe. How beneficent of them. I trust you don't mind a bit of sarcasm, now and then.
Prophylaxis, probably, rather than anticipation. I don't see Poland attacking Russia any time soon, despite any lack of "friendliness" on Russia's part.
It is more likely Europeans would seek a new friendly relationship with Russia, similar to that which was recently, until foolishly abandoned, enjoyed by Finland. They might well seek to include Russia in the EU, perhaps bringing in Ukraine as well.
He could have called both Seymour's and Peter's bluffs – where else could they have gone. The poll booths, presumably.
I don't see that "only the chiefs were partners" is a problem. The chiefs would be presumed to be acting as representatives of their people in any discussions or negotiations with the crown.
Tinkering is cool, the top tinker (sic) believes. A tinker a mender of pots and pans. Don't you mean "tinkerer".
A recent posting, to the Counterpunch website, concerning the origins of the cold war, seems to have a bearing on the Ukraine war. Fleming’s testimony in the 1971 House hearings on “Cold War? Origins and Developments” gives us another way of thinking about...
Starmer thinks that NATO will be at war with Russia within 20 years. Sir Keir Starmer has warned that "Russia is a constant threat" and that we must be "mindful of that threat from Russia to Europe." The Labour leader was speaking during a visit to British...
16 year olds pay tax. Every time they make a purchase they pay GST. But in any case payment of tax should not be the determining factor. They should have say in the services provided by government: education, health, etc. since they use those services. ...
One would have to wonder how the $80.00 figure was arrived at. How many kilowatts would be needed per 1000 km on average? Knowing that, one could arrange for the EV equivalent of a "gas guzzler" to pay more than a more economical vehicle.
Note, Ad, that the Democratic Party's commitment to workers is notional only. I believe he is recognizing that in order to maintain USA's economic dominance he has to reestablish its manufacturing base, which, decades ago was handed over to China and other...
Does Britain have an armaments industry? And, if so, is that industry expecting to receive a billion pounds worth of business from Ukraine? Or am I just being a bit too cynical?
I'll muse over the feasibility of making Donald Trump my resident geopolitical advisor, Because, of course, Kissenger is no longer with us.
Without US, and Western, support of Taiwan, accompanied by the threat of military backup, I suspect the "one China" theme would have been a reality long since. But the West probably has its own agenda in the region.
The US backed international order would implode fast. So would the global dollar economy. The "global dollar" seems to be part of the problem. That's why a number of countries are endevouring to set up BRICS.
I do remember that, I think, but only vaguely. However I get the impression that MS was talking about some report that had been prepared and was scheduled for release in the near future. If that is not the case where does the OIA come into it? I sort of ...
I know that the Act has been repealed. I was merely speculating on what may have been the case had it not been repealed. The trouble is that had it remained in force any implications would probably lead to its adoption, or non adoption, without further ...
A 9% figure seems to be frequently mentioned but, since the minimum income tax rate is 10.5%, anyone paying only 9% is, on the face of it, committing tax fraud. This raises the somewhat thorny question of whether capital gain constitutes income: if it does...
Sorry, I didn't notice it at the time, but your original question was a loaded one, since I never denied "self determination". All I said was that countries should be careful about what they determine since determinations have consequences.
Well, there you go. He seems to have joined a customs union already. I had not been aware of that.
My source is The Russo-Ukranian War by Serkii Plokii, a professor of history at Harvard and Ukranian national. Where does Putin say that this information is an "utter lie"? Plokhyii seems slightly biased in favour of Ukraine, but his account of the war ...
You seem to be advocating that might makes right. Might needs to be reckoned with. Obviously it doesn't make right, but that seems to be irrelevant. I think it's unwise for a country to base her foreign policy on an assumption that a strong neighbour will ...
Now you are just being silly. I have never denied that what has been going on in Ukraine is actual warfare.
Sorry I've done it again
The result of the Russia-Ukraine war has been to frighten every neutral country within Europe into NATO Fine. Now they know what Russia will do if threatened. They can put in their pipes and smoke it.
Now you are just being silly. When Have I ever denied that the invasion was actual warfare.
All countries, I suppose, have pockets of poverty, some more than Russia's. That doesn't make them "basket cases". [Please remove the text from your user name in your next comments, thanks - Incognito]
If you think that movement of NATO to the Russo-Ukranian border was either not threatened, or was not in fact threatening, then you would seem to be someone who engages in wishful thinking.
[Does this therefore imply that you don't believe that self-determination is a workable strategy for the 21st century?] I've never really thought of self determination as a strategy. A strategy is a plan aimed at achieving some goal. If the goal is, say, ...
"Self determination", as you are using the term, would seem would seem to imply that a country can adopt whatever policies it likes regardless of the consequences for other countries. By that argument Russia can adopt a policy of making defensive ...
I don't agree with that. Russia has a right to defend itself, even if that requires preemptive action. In any case fighting was occurring before the invasion, so her action was not entirely preemptive.
