One of my favorite Bruce Springsteen tracks from when I was somewhat younger is “Tougher than the rest”*.
As heresy I’d have to say that I like the version by Everything But The Girl somewhat better. It has been coming up a lot on my playlist while pushing through the last month of coding. It was the track that was playing when I heard the news about the second explosion at Pike River earlier in the week. I’d guess that will stay embedded as an association for a while.

Bruce Springsteen ‘official’ version from 1988 (with some very retro looking couples)

Or a better live version from 2007
* And no it is because of the music – so no smartarse comments please

“Youngstown” is the track that leaves most shivers up my spine and the lyrics are beautiful. A real anthem for men who work in the heavy industries.
“Well my daddy worked the furnaces
Kept ’em hotter than hell
I come home from ‘Nam worked my way to scarfer
A job that’d suit the devil as well
Taconite coke and limestone
Fed my children and make my pay
Them smokestacks reachin’ like the arms of God
Into a beautiful sky of soot and clay”
…those last two lines – wow
and
“When I die I don’t want no part of heaven
I would not do heaven’s work well
I pray the devil comes and takes me
To stand in the fiery furnaces of hell”
