The current closing date for public submissions on the TPP is Friday March 11th. Labour’s David Clark is calling for an extension:

Call to extend deadline for TPP submissions

The Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade committee is considering the TPP and public feedback on the controversial agreement is due by 11 March.

One of Labour’s members on the committee, David Clark, said people had told him they wanted more time to go through the more than 6000 pages of text. Mr Clark said an extension would be fair and appropriate.

“To make sure that those with an interest in the TPP, who are making the effort to wrestle with the text and understand what the meaning is and implications for the future of New Zealand, are given the appropriate opportunity to make meaningful submissions so we make better law.”

The committee’s chair, Mark Mitchell, said it was too early to judge whether an extension was needed, but the option was on the table. …

Labour’s faith in the submissions process having even the slightest effect on National Ltd™’s imposition of the TPPA on New Zealand society are touching.

There is useful information in this article relevant to TPP for those writing submissions.

EU referendum: UK could be better off leaving if TTIP passes, Joseph Stiglitz says
Stiglitz described the danger TTIP poses to society as “very significant”

Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel-prize winning economist, has said that the UK could be better off leaving the European Union if the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership passes.

“I think that the strictures imposed by TTIP would be sufficiently adverse to the functioning of government that it would make me think over again about whether membership of the EU was a good idea,” Stiglitz said.

TTIP gives corporations the power to sue governments when they pass regulation that could hit that corporation’s profits.
Stiglitz described TTIP as “a massive rewriting of the rules with no public discussion”.

“The dangers to our society are very significant,” he said.

HAVE YOU MADE YOUR SUBMISSION YET ON THE TPPA?

FYI – Here’s the Green Party reminder!

New Zealanders finally have a chance to formally have their say on the TPPA. Don’t miss the opportunity to make your voice heard.

The agreement has been signed. But this deal is far from done. Before John Key’s administration can push ahead with the TPPA, it needs to go through the Parliamentary process.

It’s the job of the Parliamentary Select Committee to weigh up all the evidence and public concerns. Our Green MPs will be at the table – and we’ll be doing everything we can to represent your views.

We’ve got until 11 March to show the Select Committee that New Zealanders are still opposed to the TPPA.

Don’t let the Government claim silence as agreement – make your voice heard on the TPPA today.

Evidence shows that the TPPA restricts what future governments can and can’t do, and presents very real risks to our environment and every New Zealander’s right to affordable healthcare, while the benefits are projected to be very small. I urge you to consider the lasting impact that this deal will have for our country’s prosperity, and to oppose the TPPA.

Submissions will be published on the Parliament website once they are released by the Select Committee.

If you want to make a full submission head to the Parliament website.

You don’t have to read very much to recognise that it’s a dog. The Gnats didn’t even bother to get a CBA done – beyond incompetent.
