At the time of writing this the media are not saying "Trump has been shot" can we please not pre-empt the facts. Time will tell.

  2. Puckish Rogue 2

Well if anyone had doubts about the election its now Trumps victory but I really hope that the MSM has a good, long look at itself and realise how much they, collectively, are to blame for this

  3. Kay 3

Well no one's going to be talking about Biden for a while.

    • Maurice 3.1

There is a wee bit of talk about President Joe Biden.

      See:

      https://www.zerohedge.com/political/shocks-system

Trump is brushing off assassin’s bullets like dirt off his shoulder, racking up a mile long rap sheet of the fakest & gayest felonies known to man, chased through civil court by crazy-eyed harridans deranged by how horny he makes them. Joe Biden has jello for supper at 4pm.”

this BBC interview with a guy outside the security perimeter who claims he saw the shooter before he fired is absolutely wild

Social media is currently inundated with speculation, conspiracy theories, hate, disinformation of all stripes about Donald Trump at the Pennsylvania rally. I investigate this and it has real-world consequences. Interrogate your sources and feeds – and wait for reliable updates.

Some of that will be intentional, some of it will be fear, some of it will be reactionary and so on. It's ok to wait until things are confirmed by trustworthy sources.

    Speaking of poor timing:

"I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that. So, we’re done talking about the debate, it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye,” Biden said.

    • joe90 7.1

And the much vaunted Secret Service who allowed someone set up a sight-line like this gets a pass, right?

      @OAlexanderDK

The shooter was on a roof approximately 125m or 400ft from where Trump was standing.

        You're implying it's a set up?

        • joe90 7.1.1.1

Their man was flanked from an elevated position by a would-be assassin who wasn't detected until after he began firing. That's an awfully big miss.

          • Puckish Rogue 7.1.1.1.1

Trump is leading in the polls, with months still to go, with an opponent that is mentally and physically breaking down before our eyes, with a VP that is even more unpopular than the current president

What is the most likely reason, Trump or some lone nutbar?

            • lprent 7.1.1.1.1.1

I am picking general nut bar at present. Especially as

              • they were a lousy shot – only ~125 metres and they get the teleprompter? That has to be at least a metre away.
              • they picked the worst kind of platform – shooting from just over the ridge of a roof is not a great shooting position.
              • no apparent exit strategy does tend to point to suicidal. Even with the delay from the security in shooting them

On the other hand… ummm actually the same things if you're looking at as being a PR stunt by a deranged political campaign. Shoot close to a candidate would be sufficient to engender support and provide a means to start throwing accusations around.

The conspiracy theories on this are going to be fierce.

              • Unconfirmed reports that he was spotted and police notified earlier, but no action was taken.

Anyway it's a sad day for America.

              • Puckish Rogue

There's no real reason for Trump to do this and every reason for a lefty nutbar to do it

                • mpledger

There are lots of external elements that would like to stir things up. Especially ones with plenty of twitter farms to stir the pot afterwards.

                  • weka

yep. Or even just someone who wanted to go out in a blaze of glory.

                    • weka

it's not like the US doesn't have plenty of men with guns willing to shoot people and die in the process.

                • weka

or any nutbar. Or the SS/FBI/CIA/whoever.

No evidence at all for any of the speculations yet (although I assume the security services know more about who the shooter is by now).

                • lprent

There’s no real reason for Trump to do this and every reason for a lefty nutbar to do it

Didn’t say that. I said “deranged political campaign”. Doesn’t need to be Trump’s campaign. Or even on the right.

But on the right there are a lot of groups and people trying to hang off the coat-tails and they have a lot of their resources pushing it from outside the campaign.

I am kind of getting lost with the numbers of PACs and other groups in support from various positions. From the 2025 group that is trying to put people into bureaucracy positions if he wins. To the people who want federal anti-abortion laws. To the more usual extremists groups.

Or for that matter the number of GOP politicians crawling for positions like running candidate for VP.

And of course people like the avid Muskies who have been making my skin crawl for the last couple of decades.

There is a shit-ton of money floating around that is dependent on a Trump presidential win and who’d have some reason to put a suicidal nutbar up to tilt the balance of a campaign.

The list on the right is extensive…

If a group on the left was organising it, then I’d have expected a better shooter. At least a meter off at 125 metres – I suspect that I could have do better myself at age 65 and I haven’t been shooting seriously in decades.

              • Incognito

they were a lousy shot …

"opponent that is mentally and physically breaking down before our eyes,"

LOL.. Biden has been making verbal gaffes and misnaming people since he became a senator 50 yrs ago (1972) . It was certainly widely known when he become Obamas running mate in 2008

Meanwhile Trumps , whos only 3 years younger, cant handle a proper press conference about …well anything serious but does his word salads and misnames people too – he called Nikki Haley 'Pelosi'

              • lprent

Yeah Guardian from 5 years ago

“‘I am a gaffe machine’: a history of Joe Biden’s biggest blunders”

                I particularly liked

In the midst of his campaign for the Democratic nomination for president in 2007, Biden took broad swipes at his opponents Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama, including one that was downright puzzling about the future president.

“I mean, you got the first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” he said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

“Joe Biden: moron racist, or poorly transcribed?” the Economist asked.

Biden swiftly attempted to clarify his intent, saying he should have used the word “fresh” instead of “clean” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

“What I meant was that he’s got new ideas, he’s a new guy on the block,” he said, while Stewart looked on skeptically. “It’s not working, right?” he joked to laughter from the audience.

          • mpledger 7.1.1.1.2

He may have been detected but it's not illegal to sit on a roof. They could have thought he was a cheapskate fan. Once he pulled out a gun then things should have changed.

            • ghostwhowalksnz 7.1.1.1.2.1

It was an AR-15 type . You cant pull that out of your jacket.

I understand some on the fringe of the crowd close to the building saw him climb up (ladder?) * with the gun*… probably slung over shoulder

              • mpledger

Pennsylvania is an open carry state so sitting on roof with a gun might not be inherently illegal. Maybe he had to do something like aim before they could legally shoot him.

                • ghostwhowalksnz

Just goes to show the armchair security was all wrong. Police did climb up to the roof but he pointed his gun at them and they dropped down to the ground.

    • joe90 7.2

it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye,” Biden said.

Unlike yourself, Biden has no history of using inflammatory, violent rhetoric.

But hey, English is complicated, right?

        Speaking of violent political rhetoric.

Former President Donald Trump shared a video on social media Friday that included an image of President Joe Biden bound and restrained in the back of a pickup truck.

The 20-second video, which Trump indicated was taken Thursday in Long Island, New York, shows a truck emblazoned with "Trump 2024" and a large picture depicting Biden tied up and lying on his side.

FDR assassin missed and killed Mayor of Chicago

There was an attempt on Truman by a group of Puerto Rican nationalists, police guarding the temp White House were killed.

Also zionist terrorist group Lehi sent letter bombs to WH in 1947

                • Puckish Rogue

Well I won't list all of the attempts because I'm sure every president has had attempts but here's the major ones…

FDR (D), Garfield (R), McKinley (R) and The Bull Moose himself (R)

That's like 6 Republicans to two Democrats

                  • lprent

You are a lazy idiot… Perhaps you should look at the motives for those assassinations

There was the obvious one that you missed – Lincoln (R). Killed by a supporter southern secessionist. “in late 1860 he was initiated in the pro-Confederate Knights of the Golden Circle” who “Booth attended Lincoln’s last speech, in which Lincoln promoted voting rights for emancipated slaves;[18] Booth said, “That means nigger citizenship. … That is the last speech he will ever give.””

And Reagan (R) – targeted by a “Hinckley believed the attack would impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he had developed an erotomanic obsession after viewing her in Martin Scorsese’s 1976 film Taxi Driver.”

Perhaps you should actually study history rather than making crap up. You aren’t very good at it.

Presidential assassination attempts in the US are typically made by people who were rather unhinged, mostly politically conservative or by anarchists who look awfully similar in political philosophy to extremist MAGA supporters waving their supposed second amendment ‘rights’ around like a penis extender.

                    😈

BTW: The end of that last paragraph was put in purely to annoy lousy shooters and other followers of Ms Grundy

Now Trump (R) missed assassination by a registered republican – motive currently unknown. But in a long line of conservative bigots and nutbars …

He was registered to vote as a Republican, according to a listing in Pennsylvania’s voter database that matched his name, age, and a Bethel Park address that law enforcement was searching Saturday night and is linked to Crooks in public records.

However had given $15 to a democrat associated PAC turnout organisation.

                    • lprent

                      And some Kennedy assassinations

                    • Puckish Rogue

Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Roosevelt, Reagan and Trump = 6 Republicans

                      FDR, Kennedy = 2 Democrats

Go get yourself checked for Alzheimers, it might explain your general hostility

And no I'm not interested in another one of your boring explanations of how you've been a moderator since before the Internet was created which you probably have saved somewhere

I remember well the morning JFK was shot. The prevailing political climate was significantly different than now.

Consider previous US Vice President, Pence was a possible target. Consider his VP could have been right into it.

There will likely be a lot more revealed on this episode.

Americans seem to be experts at mass shootings every few days, specialising in blasting away school kids. So how did someone just a few metres away miss the fat bastard?

All may be revealed perhaps at some stage, and the cops have not identified the gun person yet, and don’t seem keen to do so from media channel accounts.

We'll never know the motive of the shooter bar finding some sort of manifesto, left lying behind with his glasses. Even then there will be no trust in whatever any investigation comes out with.

The important issue is that it was most likely an attempt to leave the USA with a President 'Running on Empty, as Jeffrey St. Clair has written in Counterpunch.

        • mpledger 28.1.1.1

Young people are easily radicalised especially the marginalised.

I'm sorry you are having a tough time. Sometimes it's good to give social media a rest and concentrate on yourself.

Almost everyone has been through some kind of crap with the covid pandemic and our bodies stress responses don't just switch off on the flip of a switch. Most of us need time to destress and re-energise.

          • Descendant Of Smith 28.1.1.1.1

I'd say older people are much more easily radicalised. The anti-vax crowd, the anti-Jacinda farmers et al, the anti-Maori rhetoric most of which is non-sensical – all weird and radical viewpoints that take quite a lot of cognitive dissonance.

That's without even starting on the fundamentalist christians or the sovereign citizens. Most led and promoted by fully grown adults.

Methinks you do many, many young people a disservice.

            • mpledger 28.1.1.1.1.1

The part about youth radicalisation wasn't well put by me. Puckish Rouge said the shooter was too young to know what he was doing. The point I wanted to make was that other's can use that naivety and youthful energy for destruction.

But I think you miss out on radicalisation that is going on amongst young men by people such as Andrew Tate et al.

        • adam 28.1.1.2

ffs puckish, do you not know how splintered and bat shit crazy the far right have become?

One group want trump dead for talking about pulling out of Ukraine, whilst another faction love him for it.

          https://ctc.westpoint.edu/the-nexus-between-far-right-extremists-in-the-united-states-and-ukraine/

Some groups even want trump dead for going after the Latino, and the black vote.

Throwing around terms like left and right plays into the extremists who embrace violence as the answer to anything. Which is not something I would have thought you were a fan of, but as of today I have my doubts that is your position. Feel free to prove me wrong.

          • gsays 28.1.1.2.1

The batshit crazy and splintered isn't just a far right phenomenon.

Some lefties want inclusive language like "pregnant people" and that is mainstream. Seeking to erase the word woman from our vocabulary.

Others claiming left wing status see nothing wrong with bringing in foreign labour for welding and truck driving. Adding to the industries that wages and conditions are suppressed. LP

            • adam 28.1.1.2.1.1

I'm of the opinion the left should be defined by their economic stance and nothing more, so it's a large tent.

Agree we need to call out the lose of language, and lose of free thought that accompany that process. Or that language of inclusiveness, being a cover for even more vile act of oppression.

  28. Cricklewood 29

Given the shit shooting skills , I' d bet on someone who'd decided to 'solve' the Trump problem on their own.

Mix in some prettly blaisè security given threats are common but actual attempts are rare all the ingrediants are there.

Prob lucky it was a miss if Trump was killed at minimum there would be serious civil unrest but more likely something close to civil war.

    • Belladonna 29.1

Oh, I seriously doubt Civil War. However, I can certainly envisage a retaliatory attempt on Biden. And, I'm suspecting that this will be seen as a very real risk to his security teams (even now).

Trump would be enshrined as a martyr to his supporters – but there is no logical successor to him waiting in the wings- and civil wars take a lot of organizing.
Whoever the Republican candidate was, in that event, would have garnered enormous sympathy vote – and an almost guaranteed victory (thus placating the supporters of Saint Donald)

    • mpledger 29.2

From what I have read now, it sounds more like someone wanting to do a shooting rather than making any political point. More Lprent's disaffected loner, rather than someone with any political home.

  29. Wei 30

This was obviously a deep state hit against Trump. It spectacularly failed and now Trump's victory is assured.

Trump is far from perfect and his public position on Gaza is appalling, but his heart is really not into foreign military ventures, and so is seen as a threat by the military industrial complex.

Trump is a disrupter of corporate ruled America.

    • SPC 30.1

Trump is a disrupter of corporate ruled America.

He comes to reduce regulation of business, reduce protections of labour and the environment and reduce tax on business profit and CG – and protect American corporations with a tariff wall (paid for by consumers).

This was obviously a deep state

Using a 20 year old registered republican who cannot shoot accurately?

      • Tiger Mountain 30.1.1

So much more to emerge on this one. The memes and speculation are zooming up. One thing not addressed yet as far as I know, is how did the shooter get a fire arm onto the site? unless the dickhead had previously placed it, given there was allegedly personal search and metal detectors to gain entry to the venue.

    • PsyclingLeft.Always 30.2

This was obviously a deep state hit against Trump

Really ? Is that from the tinfoil hat feed ? Bizarre…

    • Mikey 30.3

Hilarious. The 'deep state' could crash his car / aeroplane / burn down his house / knock him over in the street / nudge him out a window, but instead they rely on a feckless 20yo?

      • lprent 30.3.1

Don’t be so hard on Wei. Wei is like a caricature of being incapable of rational thinking. I have often wondered if that account is held by a early model generative AI that has been fed by trolls. 😈

  30. Darien Fenton 31

Violence begets violence and we should condemn it. I hope everyone including Trump keeps cool heads and reflects on the reasons why this is happening. Disinformation is rife on social media and Trump will become a martyr for the Proud Boys et al. I hope he is grown up enough to resist it and someone, just someone talks about the gun laws. Allowing a 20 year old kid of bewildered political views access to an AR-15 is just another demonstration of how stuffed up American gun laws are, and we are seeing a shadow of that occurring here now with Nicole McKee from ACT.

    • Maurice 31.1

The "access to an AR15" was of little consequence. Any ordinary rifle – even a .22LR single shot in the hands of a capable user would have been dangerous at 137m range.

AR15's are NOT magic – the shooter mostly missed the primary with multiple shots and randomly shot two or three bystanders.

Stringently controlling AR15 semi-autos means that other (more accurate and effective) guns will be inevitably used.

The shooter had no regard for the most basic of American Gun Laws … he attempted an assassination – about as illegal as it gets.

      • Puckish Rogue 31.1.1

        Don't forget luck.

Trump moved his head at just at the right time.

Although had the shooter used a hunting rifle and scope maybe the result would have been different

I would like to know the ROE the counter snippers were operating under though because they got onto the shooter really quickly, like already knew he was there quickly

  31. tsmithfield 32

Many think that this unsuccessful attempt will be a boost to Trump's campaign. And that may well be the case.

On the other hand though, I do wonder how this event will affect Trump psychologically. Every time he gets on stage now, he will be wondering if another crazy will take a shot at him. Or when he is out and about meeting people.

    • PsyclingLeft.Always 32.1

I do wonder how this event will affect Trump psychologically. Every time he gets on stage now, he will be wondering if another crazy will take a shot at him.

Trump is such a total Narcissist, this (lucky?) incident/escape will reinforce his ego to an unbelievable degree.

For "bonespur" Don, it was finally his missed Vietnam blooding….(well, his other Vietnam)

      "bonespur" Don jokes here…..

Trump compared trying to avoid sexually transmitted diseases on the dating scene to “my personal Vietnam."

“It’s pretty dangerous out there,” he said in 1993. “It’s like Vietnam.”

He added in 1996: “I feel like a very great and very brave soldier."

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/06/05/trumps-flippant-talk-about-vietnam-war/

      • tsmithfield 32.1.1

About four decades ago I was involved in the New Life Church in Christchurch.

The then pastor, Peter Morrow, who was a bit of an icon in the pentecostal stream, was attacked and knifed as an older man. He survived, but never really recovered, and ended up with dementia after that. Whether the attack was the cause or not is something we can never know. But, it is certainly a possibility.

Hence, why I was talking about the psychological impact. We don't know what sort of effect these sort of situations can have on people, especially when they are older and less resiliant.

  32. Rosielee 33

We got the facts of the incident as soon as it happened – and that's all we needed. Not the constant repetition and hype every half hour since. Enough already. We get it.

  33. PsyclingLeft.Always 34

Amongst all the other frantic bits..and pieces incl Trump thinking hes been handed a gift from god ? There was this.

Butler residents shocked by Trump shooting

One couple who spoke to the BBC drove up from Pittsburgh on Saturday – about 30 minutes away – just to see the scene and take in what they see as a moment of history. Julie Busch says they could not believe something like this would happen here.

She and her partner Jonathan Clark went to church on Saturday morning, and lit a candle for Trump's recovery.

"It's just shocking this is in our backyard," Clark said. "It makes me worried for the future of democracy. Democracy feels in peril."

  34. SPC 35

If anyone was unaware of how unhinged the GOP has become, it is now becoming hard to ignore.

It's reps on the Hill are claiming a phrase used in a private phone call to donors is evidence of a hit ordered by POTUS Biden.

According to Politico, Biden said on the call: “I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that. So, we’re done talking about the debate. It’s time to put Trump in a bullseye."

A hit ordered by phone call to donors? Then carried out by a registered republican, a 20 year old living at home with his parents and using his fathers gun?

"Joe Biden sent the orders," Georgia Republican Rep. Mike Collins posted on X, formerly Twitter, in a response to a post about Mr Biden's comments to donors.

Boeburt "I do believe that Joe Biden is responsible for the shooting today."

Sen. J.D. Vance, an Ohio Republican, who is on Trump's short list of vice presidential picks, echoed similar sentiments blaming the left's rhetoric.

It moves on to calls for a silencing of Democratic Party claims about the nature of the Trump capture of the GOP and its falling into line with the cult of the strong man.

Sen. J.D. Vance, an Ohio Republican, "The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination," he wrote on X

Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina said Democrats and the media have "recklessly stoked fears", and called Trump and conservatives "threats to democracy".

Louisiana Republican Rep. Steve Scalise "This incendiary rhetoric must stop," he said.

Greene, "Pray for America. The left wants a civil war. They have been trying to start one for years. These people are sick and evil," she wrote.

So the party of immoderation, wants the Democratic Party to moderate its rhetoric.

Sniper had the shooter in his sights for 3 minutes, but was not allowed to take the shot.

    • Maurice 36.1

There was a mixture of Secret Service (on the ground – nominaly in charge) and Local Police Department (Snipers on a roof) personnel involved. There must have been some confusion as to who the person on the other roof was. Probably disbelief that anyone could be so brazen and act in view of so many. There was probably lots of radio chatter as to 'Is he one of yours or ours?' Not until he started to fire at Trump would the Police snipers have been cleared to engage … no one would have risked shooting one of the others personnel.

No plan survives first contact … if there was even a comprehensive plan at all!
