     I assume you are a referring to the court case that the speaker of the house mentioned Mike Sabin is involved in. Unfortunately there are no further details in the public domain about Mike Sabin’s court case.

     However, there may be other court cases you are referring to, perhaps you should ask about them?

   When Did Girls Start Wearing Pink?

   Little Franklin Delano Roosevelt sits primly on a stool, his white skirt spread smoothly over his lap, his hands clasping a hat trimmed with a marabou feather. Shoulder-length hair and patent leather party shoes complete the ensemble.

   I can just imagine the homophobes of today going nuts if anyone today dressed a boy like that.

     Those were the societal norms of the time. Dressing a boy like that today would be against societal norms – and you don’t have to be a “homophobe” to think so.

       But you are tending towards “homophobia” if you are discomforted at the sight of a small boy dressing in societal norms of “girl’s” clothing.

       If you watch the reactions of adults (and some other children) in early childhood centres – some adults (and children) react very strongly to young males dressing in skirts and female clothing. (Unfortunately, some also make comment when young female children dress in police or fire uniforms, or super hero costumes).

       In some ways in that era, society was more comfortable with close platonic same-sex associations.

       There was a good article on http://www.filmsforaction.org, called Touch Isolation: How Homophobia has robbed all men of touch which has a couple of good links, including one to a montage of historic photos of men together. My mother spoke of how it was normal for her and a female friend to walk in town hand in hand in their late teens. We’ve both won some and lost some in our road to acceptance for all.

       Reading on child development many years ago, I found a statistic that said in current Western culture the majority of boys would stop receiving affectionate physical touches at the age of six.

       If that is true, then is it any wonder that ALL touch becomes sexualised for those men?

         I disagree it is homophobia, or in fact that it is even wrong.

         Social norms are social norms. In some cultures it is normal to kiss strangers you meet on the cheek. That sort of behaviour would be seen as unusual / discomfortable in NZ, but that doesn’t mean we’re racist to think that way.

               In social (not business) situations, many of our cultures – kiss on the cheek when you are being introduced to someone.

               Even in some Pakeha families this is an accepted norm – definitely Maori and Pasifika cultures don’t blink an eye at this, even if it is not practised by all.

               (If you have ever attended a marae powhiri, this is part of the protocol – an acceptable subsitute for a hongi.)

         And? Shall we mandate psychological therapy for these discomfited people? Perhaps we need to label them with something – maybe Subclinical Homophobia?            Nothing, really. It is more an observation than a judgement. I have enough on my plate dealing with my own failings than thinking I can fix anyone elses.

           Perhaps, recognise when you feel discomfort at a sight that is injurious to no-one, perhaps that is a time to ask yourself why?

   Sudden Onset Of Ice Loss In Antarctica Detected

   A group of scientists, led by a team from the University of Bristol, has observed a sudden increase of ice loss in a previously stable region of Antarctica. The research is published in Science.

   Using measurements of the elevation of the Antarctic ice sheet made by a suite of satellites, the researchers found that the Southern Antarctic Peninsula showed no signs of change up to 2009. Around 2009, multiple glaciers along a vast coastal expanse, measuring some 750km in length, suddenly started to shed ice into the ocean at a nearly constant rate of 60 cubic km, or about 55 trillion litres of water, each year.

   This makes the region the second largest contributor to sea level rise in Antarctica and the ice loss shows no sign of waning.

   Well, that puts paid to the but, but the ice around Antarctica is increasing whinge that we’ve been hearing from the climate deniers.

   It would be a game changer though, if perhaps Genesis bought the assets, perhaps in a joint venture with the NZ Super Fund…
